Love that medley. Both Onett and Snowman. I'm so glad they finally remixed Onett's theme.
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.I was just reading the work page about the ambiguity of Pokey's motives, and i was thinking that the best lens through which to frame him, or the best other character to compare him to, would be Eric Cartman. Not just because both are overweight, but both are rotten little kids who will, essentially, be as rotten as the scenario allows them to be. Neither of them are truly out-of-control in the sense that Cartman and Pokey are both merely mild jerks at their best, which is usually when all is right with the world and nothing out of the ordinary is happening. Both can become Complete Monsters if they feel the situation allows for it, however.
In fact, Pokey's relationship with Giygas by the end of the game reminds me of what Cartman did with Cthulu in the "Coon and Friends" episodes. They can be omnicidal, if the power and the motive present themselves, but are not cackling madmen in their day to day lives in anytown USA (of which both Earth Bound and South Park thoroughly mock the concept).
Its an illustration of how mundane badness can turn into supervillainy if you're handed enough power. Not that Pokey underwent any profound transformation throughout the game: he just followed the temptation of power whenever it was presented to him. It also provides Giygas as a lesson: all throughout he is ultimately prey to the emotions that he wants to manipulate: the hatred he foments ends up melting his sanity, the evil ambition he cultivates in Pokey sees him in chains, Paula's (et al) prayers annihilate him.
I just picked up Earthbound. I'm having a great time with it. It's a relaxing trip, like playing an awesome Saturday morning cartoon. I love how almost everyone has something hilarious to say, how mundane the enemies are, the trippy backdrops for the fights, how I'm beating up Skater Punks with a baseball bat, and how it's not trying to be anything but a fun, innocent romp.
I'm still in the first town. I just beat Frank, and now I'm on my way to the first Your Sanctuary. The slugs are killing meeee...Are there better weapons available in Onett, or should I just stock up on hamburgers and pray to god?

"Curry killed the pussy hoping that I could kill the hate in you" - Curry, D. "TABOO | TA13OO." TA13OO, PH, 2018The Tee Ball Bat is the best weapon you can get before getting to Twoson. It gives you +8 instead of +4 like the Cracked Bat does. But it costs $ 48. So unless you have that money, are willing to grind for it, or already have the Tee Ball Bat equiped, you'll have to get through Giant Step with your current power and lots of burgers.
Being level 8 or higher also helps since you learn something useful against multiple enemies.
In the year 202X, all is devastation... Soon, any last shred of hope had by the saintliest optimist shall die and decay.I have 500 dollars on the ATM. This is good.
Oh, I got that too. Shame it eats up my pee pee, but power comes at a price.
"Curry killed the pussy hoping that I could kill the hate in you" - Curry, D. "TABOO | TA13OO." TA13OO, PH, 2018Did you find a cabin hidden in the woods? It's actually accessible, and inside there's a kid who'll give you a Mr. Baseball Cap.
If you didn't already know, You can find the entrance before Giant Step close to the mole guy.
I'm a ghost, you didn't see me.I'm at Happy Happy now...Hoo boy.
Is that cap worth a trip to the bus after I get through the crazy cultists?

"Curry killed the pussy hoping that I could kill the hate in you" - Curry, D. "TABOO | TA13OO." TA13OO, PH, 2018At this point you probably have better equips, or can get them from the Twoson Dept. Store.
By the way, in the cultist village, try taking eggs/bananas without paying for them, then talking to the dorky guy standing near the foodstand.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! So, I just got Earth Bound a while ago, and it's pretty good. The only major complaint I have so far is that the enemies spawn WAY. TOO. QUICKLY for me to react to them properly.
I've made it to the part where you play as Jeff for the first time. Is there a good way to level him up fast so he can catch up to Ness and Paula?
"Thanks for the lesson. But I don't need you to tell me who I am."The best way I can think of is to fight a Gruff Goat and heal up at one of the tents afterwards. Then repeat.
In the year 202X, all is devastation... Soon, any last shred of hope had by the saintliest optimist shall die and decay. Also, if you have the time to spare, try and grind for the T-Rex Bat before leaving that area. May take a while getting cookies and other drops from the Mooks there to sell at the store, but keep to it, and you'll have a fairly strong bat to carry you through a good portion of the game once you control Ness again.
When you wish upon a side of beef, soon will come an end to all your griefNear the very end of Jeff's solo run, you'll reach an area home to Cave Boys. Not only do they give a huge amount of Exp, they always drop Picnic Lunches, which you can use to heal yourself as you fight them (They hit hard, but they miss very often, so you can afford to take a turn to heal).
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Okay, thanks everyone!
"Thanks for the lesson. But I don't need you to tell me who I am."You know I haven't played this game in a long time but I wonder if there is a way I could catch up on old times?
"We are just like Irregular Data. And that applies to you too, Ri CO. And as for you, Player... your job is to correct Irregular Data."Take a gander at this preview at the MOTHER remake hack:
Is that an ongoing project? I remember seeing something similar a while back, but the hack was cancelled.
If it's still going I must play it when it's released! Mother 1 is the only one of the three I haven't played yet.
In the year 202X, all is devastation... Soon, any last shred of hope had by the saintliest optimist shall die and decay. It's going strong, and they're apparently done with all maps!
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.Am I the only one who's not mad over the MOTHER 3 fiasco? On one hand, it DOES look interesting to play, but on the other hand, I can understand why Nintendo would seem hesitant to release MOTHER 3 to the West, seeing as how in Japan, it's seen as a Contested Sequel.
"Thanks for the lesson. But I don't need you to tell me who I am."I'm not upset. While I am somewhat dissapointed that it never saw an english release I've always understood the reasoning behind why it never left Japan.
Although I do have to wonder if MOTHER 3 would still be so highly regarded if got an actual Western release in the first place...
That's one of my questions, as well. Would MOTHER 3 be so highly regarded if it did get an English release?
The reason why I ask is that 9 times out of 10 that I run into a Earth Bound fan, they're BEGGING for a release of the game.
"Thanks for the lesson. But I don't need you to tell me who I am."Well I actually played Earth Bound back before I knew about the series status in releases. I will also admit that it's notoriety in releases (or lack of) got me more interested. I was really excited for the rerelease because it meant that I could legally play the game in my country with out having pay a fortune for overseas shipping.

why would an actual physical western release matter?
we can already play it with little to no trouble.
It probably would of mattered about a decade ago but because I live about 2 hours from the nearest city and thus the nearest gamestore I'm glad that Earth Bound got a digital rerelease. It means I can easily support a game I like without having to drive a great distance to do so.
Well, it wouldn't although fans would like to see it in cartridge form. Mother 3 would make a great DLC but Mother will forever remain a cult classic series.

Well, they couldn't just loop the Onett theme. Every remix Smash 4 introduced had to be 2 minutes long.
Though, yeah, they could have picked a song other than Snowman for Onett to transition into. Maybe something equally upbeat to Onett like New Age Retro Hippie? If there's one thing I don't like about some of Smash 4's music, it's how awkward the transitions are in a lot of the medleys, though the Onett/Winters remix is a minor case.
