Have the comics always just been a dollar on iTunes? O.o I haven't bought them in such a long time I've forgot.
Just read the latest Friends Forever. Definitely a fun issue. They definitely found a nice balance in making Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon nasty without being unbearable like the show often does. Some funny dialogue from Diamond Tiara and even some cute moments with Silver Spoon really help make this one work and the ending is priceless.
Just read Friends Forever #16, and it was pretty fun and cute. I was unsure about the comic having a Velma like pony, since the alternate cover first showing her made it seem like Diamond Tiara just randomly had one around, but having Diamond hire a detective for a scavenger hunt made sense and Prancy Drew was a pretty fun character. I love that this universe now has a random kid detective who Twilight is a fan of. Her scene with Pinkie was also pretty amusing. The story did a good job making Diamond and Silver mean without having it get aggravating, although I did feel it was a bit out of character for them to actually know enough about the town residents to solve the clues. I did think it was cheap how the Cutie Mark Crusaders kept accidentally getting back on track, but I suppose it's fine because they didn't win the contest in the end.
The art was generally good, besides the fact that the adult ponies are way too tall compared to the fillies. Also, <snob voice>the Sailor Scouts have clearly already appeared as adults in previous issues, so there's no way they could be fillies for this story. I demand continuity from my cameos!</snob voice>
I think it worked well enough at least for Silver Spoon. I think between her applause for Granny Smith's story at the end of Family Appreciation Day and her enjoying trying to solve the riddles, it seems like she likes Ponyville history which makes her bonding with Prancy a little more believable (and why she's a little reluctant when she has to abandon her)

Just finished the FF#16 too. I found it enjoyable, though nothing that really grabbed me by the arm. I'd say its biggest strength is that it's one of a handful of the comics to have a good enough mix of wacky hijinks and seriousness to capture the tone of the show. One really strange thing about the ending, though, is that Diamond Tiara was super-focused on winning, yet somehow forgot the win condition required the entire team to return. If there was only a single detail she remembered at all, that should be it.
Aside from that, I also noticed the adults seemed to be a bit overly tall, which put my off at first. But the 'camera' is actually kind of low in all the panels, so I let it slide on the assumption that it's supposed to be how they look from the fillies' perspective.

Seriously IDW writers. Put the freaking Jerkass Ball away and go back and watch the show and pay attention to the characters cuz this flanderized characterization really needs to stop. Yes, Rarity is vain and can do the wrong things in order for her stand out or give Carousel Boutique a good name but to side with Filthy over a plaque is ridiculous. And, of course, the first sign of trouble was the moment Diamond Tiara showed up. And after the really good FF 16 too... The only thing I really liked is that the Cutie Mark Crusaders were the Only Sane Fillies who didn't want this civil war and that Twilight is able to exercise her authority in a way that works and isn't stupid.
Oh, and this

Eh, that panel actually doesn't make anything better. It'd be better if it was a CMC member, but it being Cranky feel Oo C.
I can just tell by the panels I've seen on Derpi I ain't gonna like this story. I'm also starting to understand why people really hate the comics nowadays.
My Tumblr "If theirs one thing I'm good at, it's blowing" Jesse Cox 2013Hey, I don't hate the comics nowadays.
My only gripe with this issue is Rarity being the ringleader on Rich's side. A feud between the Apple and Rich families over who really founded Ponyville would be a great plot. But, while that technically is still the case, the focus being on Rarity and Applejack makes it feel like those two are having yet another one of their disputes and happened to drag all of Ponyville into it.
Other than that this issue was alright.

#IceBearForPresidentYa'll've heard me before. I didn't mind "The Good, The Bad & The Ponies" at all. I read through Captain Deer-elves Planet without complaint. I even accepted whatever they did to Celestia in "Reflections" for the sake of rounding out the character, as jarring as it was.
This was the first time I ever felt disgusted after finishing an issue. I only kept from throwing it out for future reference, and I honestly don't know if i want to pick up the conclusion. It was like all the "sudden conflict between the Mane Six" fics I force myself to read just so they won't haunt me, or all the ones which keep turning Applejack into a self-righteous, paranoid bitch. And we don't even have Katie to blame this time.
And really, Twilight wouldn't have left much a more specific note?
There is no beginning. There is no end. There is only... Hooty.Maybe she figured the others would work it out on their own?
And to be fair, there was at least one point where one of them started to realize they were going too far; and then the other side did something stupid.
And another reviewer mentioned that the comic is pretty much exactly like a real argument - both sides have good points, both sides do stupid things, and by the end both sides have stopped caring about the central issue and are costing on hurt feelings said during the argument.

Well, that was a really strange issue. I feel like the conflict really escalated too quickly, especially for such close friends. It makes them all seem like they have a super short fuse (whereas Look Before You Sleep indicates that even when they didn't know each other particularly well, Applejack and Rarity didn't have fuses anywhere that short). I can understand the hurt feelings and the idea of secession coming up. Actually campaigning for it is a bit of a stretch, but eh. Having a clearly planned back-up of physical violence is... uh, well, where my willing suspension got picked up, broken over someone's knee, folded in half, then broken again.
Also, that's a really ludicrous amount of people there so fast when barely a day has passed since Twi did her bragging.
FE: Genealogy Story Run 7PM PT Sun, Mon, Fri; Expert Unicorn Overlord 7PM PT Wed, Thurs: http://www.twitch.tv/kuroitsubasatenshiJust read Friends Forever #17, about Twilight and Big Mac, and I liked it a lot. Twilight was incredibly adorable here, including her expression when Big Mac's intellectual side hits on her, and Big Mac was pretty cute too. The covers and synopsis made it seem like Twilight would go crazy, and I'm glad she didn't really in this story.
Here's a report about the MLP comics panel at Awesome Con, including who's writing what and little hints as to what comics are coming down the pipeline.
Just finished it too. That was very strange, in a charming, Alice in Wonderland sort of way. I can't think of any serious gripes or super notable moments, but it was generally quite enjoyable. Probably a little too weird for me to call it show tone, but it's definitely on the same track.

X-Men X-Pert, my blog where I talk about X-Men comics.Found the issue kinda meh myself. The only thing I found worthwhile were Twilight's various expressions.
#IceBearForPresidentJust read issue 31. I knew going in that nothing was going to make up for that awful first part and I was proven right. That said, the ending was nice and made sense.

Read the latest issue too and I feel that there's a marked difference. Everyone seems to be back in character and it's a sweet show-like middle and conclusion to a story that had a really iffy and shaky start. Also, that Twilight kitty face.
FE: Genealogy Story Run 7PM PT Sun, Mon, Fri; Expert Unicorn Overlord 7PM PT Wed, Thurs: http://www.twitch.tv/kuroitsubasatenshiI like how, in the end, it's not really Twilight that saves the day - she gives it her best shot, but ultimately it's the whole town that pulls itself together to help her when she gets overwhelmed.
Although the argument started off a bit forced, all the ponies coming together like that is totally in character for them.
So I was reading some fanfiction the other day and I came across this one, and saw the author’s note.
It’s actually sad for IDW’s MLP comics if a fanfic author had to say that the derailment was the comic’s fault and not themselves.
The comics have been pretty hit or miss as of late. I did not like the Eq G holiday special, but I'm sure most the flaws with it.
As someone whose incorporated comic canon before, I'll probably just use the comic's nebulous status as official canon to pick what works and what doesn't with my stories.
Justice is a joy to the godly, but it terrifies evildoers.Proverbs21:15 FimFiction account.Just read Friends Forever 18. It was alright. Very predictable but it was cute. I do give it props for the Carrie inspired flashback. Without the mass murders that follow, of course.

The artstyle really makes the fillies look older than they are in the show. Not saying that's a bad thing on itself, just that it looks like it's set two years from now on.
