Would Star Fox work with class-character shooter elements?

Now I know that series' main selling point is rail shooting with free flying (or tank treading) on the side.

I also know that the third person shooter "on foot" portions of Assault didn't quite work out.

But instead of scrapping on-foot segments from future releases, how about refining it with a few cues taken from Borderlands?

Borderlands as you know has playable four characters, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

I would somewhat envision this scenario.

Fox: The all-arounder. Works well with many mid-range ballistic and energy weapons.

Falco: Prefers long range engagement. Bonus to aircraft maneuverability.

Slippy: Fights by proxy using automated weapons and well placed high explosives. Can perform, literally, on the fly repairs on friendly vehicles.

Krystal: Not sure what weaponry she should use, maybe the staff and various other space opera melee weapons, but I do know that she has psychic powers. Perhaps it could be used towards healing allies and blowing up enemies.

So do you like the thought?

I think something along those lines would be pretty neat, though I barely remember Assault's third-person shooter portions.

Maybe in the multiplayer of a Starfox ga-

Wait a second, didn't they do this with Command? True, Fox's Arwing was the only one that got upgraded over the course of the game, but everyone had custom ships with various abilities. The most drastic being Panther (Enormous Zapper lasers and no homing) and Leon (All-foe instant Wide Lock, but no basic lasers)

I have a message from another time...

If Star Wolf is to be included then I would probably see the following.

Wolf: Heavy weapons, prefers machine guns and bazookas alike. Can enter a berserker rage to endure and deal extra damage.

Leon: Stealthy character that uses sabotage and impersonation to get things done. His weapons are usually laced with some kind of poison.

Panther: Being the romantic type, he dual wields pistols. He is the most mobile of all characters to the point where can for short moments outright dodge incoming enemy fire.
