Ah Battletech.

I remember the shitstorm FASA went through with the HG court lawsuit before they reestablished again last year.

Question is, how do you add in Battle Tech? I mean, I guess you could just throw in canon characters and their 'mechs: Victor Steiner-Davion and his Dire Wolf Prometheus, Rhonda Snord and her Highlander (also known as "Heavy Metal" in Mech Warrior: Online), Jaime Wolf and his Archer...

Good question. But I guess something can be done that Battletech characters can be added..

Not that I'm familiar with it aside from Mechwarriors.

I recommend looking at Sarna.net, at least. If you can get your hands on the novels (even the digital versions), that'd be even better, but in any case, here's also a list of some notable characters starting from circa 3025-onward:

• Grayson Death Carlyle (founder of the Gray Death Legion merc unit)
• Morgan and Patrick Kell (brothers, founders of the Kell Hounds merc unit)
• Ardan Sortek (friend of Hanse Davion, Prince's Champion)
• Jaime Wolf (commander of the Wolf's Dragoons, friend of Minobu Tetsuhara)
• Justin Xiang Allard (double agent for the Federated Suns, later rescues Victor Steinr-Davion and holds off the Falcon Guards)
• Hanse Davion (First Prince of the Federated Suns, marries Melissa Steiner of the Lyran Commonwealth to join their realms, is succeeded by Victor)
• Theodore Kurita (ends up becoming Coordinator of the Draconis Combine)
• Phelan Kell/Ward/Wolf (son of Morgan Kell, is captured by Clan Wolf and becomes one of them, later leads Clan Wolf-in-Exile as its Khan)
• Aidan Pryde (Jade Falcon Warrior responsible for rebuilding the Falcon Guards to their former glory, dies at Tukayyid)

And that's just scratching the surface.

Now all we need is Sakura Taisen since Patlabor's going to make its debut, but I have some doubts.

Ok, I'm starting to have a severe amount of trouble with my fic. There are two things I really want to do but are unable to do for different reasons, and its bugging me.

1: Adding Dancougar. On one hand, there are loads of SRW games with Dancougar, and if you couldn't tell I was going for "unused series" (I think the most was Turn A Gundam which was in Alpha Gaiden, Z, and Z2, followed by The Big O and a smattering of 2 game series.). On the other, when was the last time the base mechs were seriously used? Alpha Gaiden, IIRC. Part of me wants to have them in for about half of the fic without hitting any farther than Beast and Humanoid mode. Of course, that's IF I put it in, which isn't likely.

2: Super Dimensional Fortress Macross. It's only appeared in the Alpha Series (four games, but still), and hasn't appeared before or since. I thought it was more common, and it should be. Unfortunately I am unable to watch any non Robotech version of the series (which I refuse to watch because of my hatred of Harmony Gold.), meaning I can't get anything decent done in that way.

Still, progress is looking good. BTW, when I said "Shin Mazinger ZERO", what I meant was "a massive smattering of things from all Mazinger universes". Which is going to include, eventually, the Mazinger mechs being based off of Mazinkaiser Skull and Wingle, who crossed into this universe 10 years ago (around the time the Shizuma Drives were invented) in the style of New Mazinger. It's also going to use a few things from the base series I haven't seen (the Gamias for backup attacks, possible use of Erika for the same thing - remember her? - Lorelei and the Danube @ being piloted by Shiro, and a bunch of other stuff. Also, Turn A Gundam is basically an excuse to throw in as many past Gundam series as I can (with added justification to mountain cycles! And you can expect odder units to show up as well, like the Blue Destiny 3 and the F90).

I've watched about 1/2 the series on that list, too, but unfortunately the hardest stuff is yet to come, as I have to locate Dragonar yet (and it's NEEDED)

BTW, I keep seeing people talking about a SRW fic with only combiners, and I decided to pull a list together.

UC Gundam (the Core Block system, the Back Weapons System of the RE-GZ, the GP-03 Dendrobium, everything in Victory Gundam, the Super Gundam...)

After War Gundam X (there was that one unit that could combine with everything, right? I remember it from Alpha Gaiden...)

Gundam 00 (0 Raiser?)

Dai-Guard (it combines! And later, the parts move by themselves!)

Yeah, not many combining Reals (though I probably missed a bunch, most of those are just the ones from SRW games and I didn't count Meteor packs/Strike's various forms.)

As for Supers, well...

Combattler V, Voltes V, Grendizer (the Mazingers as well due to Pilders), Jeeg, Gravion, Gurren Lagann, God Mars, Gao Gai Gar, God Sigma, Goddanar, Dancougar, Dancougar Nova, Zoids, and of course Getter Robo's various shows, on top of many, MANY more.

EDIT: Space Runaway Ideon. HOW DID I FORGET THAT.

Ditto. The idea of what basically amounts to a Mega Crossover SRW Ultrazord is too awesome to pass up.

Manga version of Getter Rays and the Ide are all in there, though. That combo may present problems.

It suddenly occurs to me that you seem to have forgotten Gunbuster.

Doing what they do best: being high-end and very-high-firepower Real Robots. Commandoes running rampant through Zakus and GMs, groups of Mad Cats picking fights successfully with hero units, Morgan Kell and Kai Allard-Liao completely wrecking the Big Zam's day, Renny Sanderlin throwing himself on the bullet for a main character and surviving because that's what usually happens for a MechWarrior, even when the machine goes down.

They're not so much main character units compared to some of the others unless we have one of the setting's truly exceptional MechWarriors, but they are the sort of thing a main character would probably be glad to have backing them up.

I'd say shame again but HG ain't what it used to be. Aside from two excellent computer games, Heavy Gear was an amazing tabletop wargame and RPG setting in the '90s. Then stuff happened and now it's at best tolerable. (Also there was Gear Krieg, which was like Heavy Gear but World War 2, and Jovian Chronicles, which was essentially a Westernized MS Gundam.)

Woo hoo! More stuff decided for SE!

Story is going to effectively start just before the Solo Ship reaches Earth - like, by Chapter 15 they'll be here. There they will join up with Diana's faction (and HARRY MOFOING ORD) as well as the Idaho, and will then immediately be on the run again from Gym and the Giganos Empire he works with, as well as the Radam (I'm not sure how to handle the Buff Clan here, considering the Radam are going to be running around. I'll think of something, though I'll probably make them somewhat less antagonistic) First robot will be in that group.

Second robot is going to a bit of an odd faction, consisting of the Photon Power Labs, what remains of the Saotome Research Lab (remember, this is Shin Vs Neo, the lab was gutted two years ago), and Megas XLR (Who will be hitching a ride to Japan with Texas Mack - in this continuity Tokyo got Getter Nuked instead of New York, so America has less reason to be antagonistic). Oh, and early on they gain the best Real in the world on their force.

The third is going to be inside Tokyo (which survives the Getter Nuke by being sealed off) and will be in the party of Musashi (who LIVES this time!), Ayato and friends, and Mikoto and her two pals. This group WAS going to have The Vision Of Escaflowne thrown in as well, but after a long time of debate I decided to screw that series, it doesn't fit (if I do a sequel - I might - it and Aura Battler Dunbine are in.)

Meanwhile, the world police (a mixture of Mithril and the IPO, with the Space Knights and a hint of the police from a certain other show mixed in) manage to find the fourth, put one of theirs in, corral NERV into helping, get the rest of the groups together, and then proceed to form the main team. (come on, they have Heinrich Von Freeman, Chuujo and the rest of his organization, Kalanin (uh, for a while, we're following all material here, and Dan Dastun (and Roger, he's got some plot significance here). Why WOULDN'T they be awesome?)

The fifth robot is a secret. It's not being revealed until near the end, as its existence is... well, there's a lot of spoilers in there.

So I finally picked up W again and started into the endgame, and fully upgraded Genesic Gao Gai Gar is hilariously broken. I mean that literally, it's so broken that I keep clutching my sides as it friggin rips everything in its path a new one. And I don't even have Goldion Crusher yet....

Anyway, I'm starting to get the urge again to try my hand at an SRW fic, but I can't decide if it'll be more Earth-based (in which case I'd center the plot around The Brave Express Might Gaine, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Mobile Fighter G Gundam) or if I want it to be more Space-focused, in which case the main spotlight would go to the Space Runaway Ideon and Martian Successor Nadesico.

I'm also tempted to try and throw in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and ZZ Gundam, just to recreate the Domon/Zechs/Puru team from Dynasty Warriors Gundam.

.... Actually, fuck it, maybe I'll use Dynasty Warriors Gundam itself as a Gundam representative in the fic.

The fic will probably end up with a fairly low series count relatively, but does anyone have any remarks/suggestions?

The only series that are a given regardless of which route I take are Mazinkaiser (because it's the only part of Mazinsaga I know well enough to use), some incarnation of Getter Robo or another (either the original manga, or the Armageddon OVA), and Tekkaman Blade. Anything else depends on whether I decide to focus more on Earth or in outer space.

At least that's more than I know; the only part of the Mazin Saga I'm familiar wit is Mazin Saga: Mutant Fighter

Looks like some Patlabor stuff can be placed in order to represent Real Robots.

Maxwell: I want to use Shin Mazinger ZERO, but I only have access to the first 8 chapters of it, so that kinda puts the kibosh on that idea. The alternative is to use the Mazinger Angels manga, which is pretty much Mazinsaga meets Charlies Angels, but if I did that then I wouldn't have access to the badass Mazinger that set the entire Earth on fire.

Ominae: Who was that directed at? I know nothing of Patlabor.
