[up][up] Oh, I had forgotten about those trucks! The way they mistreated the engines, their laughter that makes me think of a chipmunk or a weasel, and the fact that they got away with this sort of behaviour 9 times out of 10. Honestly, someone should make an Angry Birds game where you get to blow away those accursed trucks! evil grin

Scar from the Lion King. Slade, maybe Red X(possibly too morally ambiguous) from Teen Titans. Joker, Two-Face from Batman: The Animated Series. Azula from ATLA.Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Lex Luthor, DCAU. Xanatos, Gargoyles. Syndrome, The Incredibles.

Here's a villain that left a big impression on Western audiences...the poacher from Bambi!

For those who don't know, here's his most terrible act:

Yep, he (that's the assumption here) killed Bambi's mother. A little trivia fact: it's illegal to kill does, let alone fawns, in most parts of the USA. Hunting is supposed to be done generally in the season autumn, and the poacher was clearly violating that law by hunting in the winter!

There's also the fact that he killed a pheasant, and was acting very much like that Video Game player who has to kill everything that moves. This is based on the fact that he was indiscriminately shooting at different types of animals and killing several of them during the spring or summer season...not even close to hunting season! His hunting dogs are apparently more like panthers than actual dogs. The film shows a camp with several tents, which would indicate that it may be a group of poachers and not just one! Then there's the fact that he failed to keep his campfire under control, and caused a huge forest fire.

All the while, the poacher is never actually seen. There was supposed to be a scene at the end of the film where Bambi and his father find the corpse of a hunter, but the test audience thought it was too grim. Personally, I wish they included that scene. That way, we would finally see that poacher and cheer over the fact that he paid for killing Bambi's mother! evil grin

No, I don't think the film was criticizing hunting in general. I think it was supposed to criticize poaching, which makes a mockery of everything hunting stands for! <Angry>

At the time the film was released, WAS that law in effect? Disney would also portray a villain poacher in The Rescuers Down Under, who had a large screen presence.

Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson saw The Lion King for the first time and said the only thing they thought was wrong with the movie was that they showed Mufasa's dead body. They felt that should not have been on-screen.

[up] To be honest, I have never even heard of these animators until you mentioned them. They look like members of an older generation that have probably not had much exposure to Japanese stuff.

I mean, hey, Fist Of The North Star features gut-splattering violence among other things, and that is aimed at kids! Then there's Chirin No Suzu, which shows the corpse of Chirin's mother, and Chirin does not become a better character from the tragedy.

Personally, I take my hat off to The Lion King, because Disney proved that they could be as gutsy as the Japanese with their stuff. It's not Disney's fault that they're surrounded by squeamish people who think "kid-friendly" stuff has to be all sunshine, rainbows, and lollipops! tongue

[up]Frank and Ollie are two of the Nine Old Men; the original nine Disney animators. If it wasn't for them, there wouldn't BE any anime.

@Max While the Nine Old Men are quite influential in animation and I respect them greatly, it's always nice to try new things for different generations of disney fans.

Interestingly enough, wasn't the final "villain" of Bambi technically fire(cue some Smokey reference). Everyone seemed to flee from it, even the hunters.

@ 64 No one eats like Gaston!

Anyway, my favorite villains are:

  1. Mrs. Puff from Spongebob. I liked her when she was temporarily a villain in "No Free Rides," when she stole Spongebob's boat (Hilarity Ensues). I hated her in Demolition Doofus tho because she crossed the Moral Event Horizon by trying to murder Spongebob.

  2. I love Shego from Kim Possible. I remember wanting to be like her as a little girl.

I just can't say for sure, but Scar from The Lion King is a strong candidate simply for seeing Simba after what Scar did to Mufasa, and then what Scar does to Simba.

And Megamind is just way cool and carries the bonus of having reformed. I'm also partial to Hades, despite the problems with the Hercules film.

Scar, hands down. Because charisma. And his Villain Song is awesome.

But I also really like Rattlesnake Jake.

And Shere Khan.3

Also Megatron and Starscream and Tai Lung.

Nerissa from WITCH was one of the most brilliant villains I've ever come across. She was cunning, patient, intelligent, and despite starting out less powerful then both the heroes and the previous villain managed to be the most threatening and dangerous force on the show.

My top male villain: Victor Von Doom, from the early Eighties series Spiderman And His Amazing Friends. Doctor Doom is a top-tier villain in the Marvel Universe, and this cartoon kept him in character. Of course, the 22-minute show couldn't cover that much character depth in one go, but it did show him making a raw power arc between his gauntlets complete with Kirby dots. The Most Dangerous Man On Earth, indeed.

My top female villain: Eris, the goddess of discord, from Dreamworks Animation's Sinbad Legend Of The Seven Seas from 2003. She's like Star Trek's Q: devious, guileful and shape-changing, with Reality Warper powers. She plays with humanity like so many Weebles, and keeps a corral of powerful monsters on call. Picture the Norse God Loki as a slinky sexpot, and that's what we're up against.
