Seeing as I love Ubuntu, and I love Left 4 Dead 2, it's a win-win. Wonder if there will be anything like the Mac buds? (I'm thinking penguin hat)
Well, if it means I can get native support for Team Fortress 2 in the foreseeable future, I'll be quite happy.
I'd love that too, but unless Valve can get it ported really quickly, I get the feeling that TF2 would be one of the last Valve games ported to Linux due to it changing so much.
Well, they already managed to port it to the Mac OS. I mean, it's possible that future releases will break compatibility, but releases like Ubuntu 12.04 LTS are going to be around for quite some time.
Yes, and Left 4 Dead 2 is the guinea pig, so to speak, since it really hasn't changed that much. If this goes as planned, then the rest of the games will find their way to Linux as well.
Yeah, Left 4 Dead 2 is also a perfect game to use as a test since it's likely using the most advanced Source engine outside of maybe Dota 2. If it works, it should be easy enough to port earlier Source games.
Wizard Needs Food BadlyWell, Gabe has confirmed that the beta of Steam for Linux will be released "fairly quickly" yesterday, so accounting for Valve Time, next year? Or is that what "soon" means?
And whenever this happens, I'll totally buy L 4 D 2.

Let me check the previous Valve Time. Neither "fairly quickly" nor "quickly" exists so all bets are of, but you don't want it to be "soon" because that means almost 9 years.

Regardless, I'm not expecting it this month.
Well, unless it somehow appears with the release of CS:GO (there's a bin/linux32 directory in it from what I've heard from beta-testers) on the 21st, you're probably right. I'm pretty confident that we'll see it before the end of the year though.
If it's this month, Valve can just SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!
And I do hope that works on my Linux, seeing as I'm on x64.
EDIT: It seems that the Linux32 directory is currently empty, so it's probably something for later.

Well, given that the Cold Stream update page says that L4D2 will be "one of the first Valve games to be released on Linux", I wouldn't be too shocked to see CS:GO (and maybe Portal 2) alongside it assuming they all run on the same version of Source.
Submitted.
Oh, how I hope to get in.
The open beta of Team Fortress 2 updated the other day the Linux game and engine binaries.
IT LIVES!!! (link is to the .deb file, may or may not work depending on setup. You also need to have had an invite to the beta sent to you, otherwise it apparently will not work.)

Well, I'm into the beta. Took a while to dig out the confirmation e-mail, though.

More on Valve's entry into the console (ish) market.

Yep, thought so...linux-based machines...
Give me cute or give me...something?If your link borks, just run the original link through tinyurl or bitly or whathaveyou.
The "Steam Box" makes a lot of sense and VAL Ve can have some Killer App from the beggining by anouncing with it the release of the sequel of a VAL Ve everyone has been waiting for Ricochet 2 Half Life 2 Episode 3/ Half Life 3 or however VAL Ve decides to call it. Add native Steam support and have Steam sales and the Steam Box can end up doing really well.
The implications/rumors/suggestions of having multiple "Steam Box" manufacturers is also interesting-it opens up an avenue of competition among manufacturers to see who can make the best Steam Box within Valve's standards.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelAnd all that compettition may end up making Sony and Microsoft reevaluate they strategy for the next console generaration.
Coming to Ubuntu first...First game is Left 4 Dead 2
