Oh yeah, it has the feel of a work print, and not just coz the new footage is of bad quality, a lot of it is exactly the stuff you'd cut.
Joked to my friend that if that's "the director's cut" the studio did everyone a favor by making it shorter.
It does provide more clarity on the whole merging thing. I kinda prefer the shorter version just cause....well, it's the one we got for 28 years XD But it's so cool to see more of it!

Kinda like how the deleted scenes to Disney's The Black Cauldron (or rather the storyboards for them) were recently uncovered, and it was found out not much interesting was featured.

The random guys carrying a pane of glass about 10 minutes in are the MVPs of the movie. They singlehandedly stopped Spike from kidnapping Daisy XD
Also, I have a random theory that the lineman who blacked out and woke up in another dimension on Miraculous World is the SMB movieverse's Stanley the Bugman.

The movie is getting
a new RB Blu-Ray and Region 4 DVD with a lot of extras, including the workprint cut with deleted scenes. Sadly Disney owns Lighmtotive in the US and they aren't keen on rereleasing it here/in Region 1 despite the Archive asking about it several times. :(
EDIT: TIL the movie got a short manga adaptation in a special issue of CoroCoro, and several references in other Mario manga. The adaptation was compressed and Adapted Out Lena entirely, but did nod to her by giving Daisy's mother her design.

With the news of Illumination's Mario movie casting, SMB movie fans are crawling out of the woodworks to discuss the '93 film and its casting. It'll be really interesting to compare the two! (I'm amused that both of them have a character named Spike and a character based on Foreman Spike.)
I wonder if they'll do a manga adaptation of the upcoming Mario movie like they did the '93 one.

There are plans to release a 4K version of the film for its 30th anniversary in Japan!
Kind of surprised Japan is holding an anniversary of this film. Reception must have been better than the internet led me to believe.

Maybe it's nostalgia? Plus Mario is one of the most famous characters of all time so even something as shifty as this movie can get some reverence as the live action Mario movie.

See my relationship with this movie is that it starts out so batshit insane and stupid that you kind of get into it. And then it gets even more crazy and wacky as we see our characters get the plot into motion... and then it just becomes really dull. You get tired of looking at this ugly looking place and this unhappy set of characters just going from place to place while the plot feels like it's just being put on pause. And there's such an absence of color that it becomes draining to watch.
By the time we see the Mario Brothers in the suit I'm just "My God, COLOR!" Cause color is just so rare in this movie.

The set is gritty, but it's really colorful, especially with a good print of the movie—the DVD's colors are washed-out so it looks darker and smudgier than it is.

So watching the new fan cut. Honestly, not much of an upgrade. Most of it is extra footage of people coming or going, or just stuff that was cut to made the movie more tight.
It does now straight up say the king / daisy's dad is the fungus in town as opposed to saving that for a reveal.
Overall, not much of an upgrade imho.
And today we learned that cut footage is usually cut for a reason.
