So more media for this game is out. It seems classes are back, new vehicles, enemies have new attacks (video I saw the ants grab and maul you now), and I am sure I saw new vehicles.

I think they are still going with the player classes.

The NA and EU release shouldn't be too far behind the Japan one. Also better information in general.

I like how the guy just keeps explaining what EDF as it is, and doesn't even care.

Same as usual.... Wing it.

He was gushing a bit too much but it is one of the first All English screens I have seen of the game.

I was interested in the adjust your strength option. I wonder what that is for?

More interviews about it

They mention that your weapons level as you use them. So if you have gear you like if you keep using it, it becomes more effective over time. This is definitely the sequel we needed in place of Insect Armageddon the reboot.

Destructoid Official Release date is Feb 18th with expansion packs coming out launch day. Given the expansion packs were already made after the Japan launch not that bad a deal.

The game is out in North America on the 18th and the 21st for Europe. Pre-orders are open.

I had to ask the clerk at Game Stop about it. He wasn't even aware it was coming out. Lack of advertising will likely make this game another Cult Hit.

For those few who have pre-ordered or will be picking up the game shortly after launch day, there is a promotional offer on facebook for EDF 2025.

You watch an ad they link you to for the game which is b grade ham and cheese schlock. In exchange you will get the Special Force Mission pack for free. The promotion runs until the 2-24-14.

It is in their February 11th post. You can also find the ad here

I'll admit, that ad actually surprised me for a moment.

I'm not sure which console I should get this for, since I have both. I'll probably get it for 360 since my PS 3 has been wonky lately.

Go for it. The 360 Crowd seems to be the big buyer of the game at the moment. Of course in Japan it is the inverse with the PS 3 crowd being the lead there.

Release is tomorrow. You can still get the special ops missions on facebook. That little offer lasts until the 24th. Sorry only for US and Canada.

For You European Tropers you have to wait until the 21st.

I am picking mine up tomorrow and plan to play all the classes for the first few mission and give my first impressions. I will do my best to not spoil anything.

We have a page up already at Earth Defense Force 2025 feel free to contribute.

Damn, I wish this would get ported to PC. I really can't afford a 360 or PS 3 at the moment. tongue

lewa: Not likely to happen. 2017 was never ported either. But shop around for used 360's or PS 3's with the release of current gen systems many have gone on sale for lower then average prices.

Star: You should enjoy it. It has the same general flavor as 2017 but it is shinier and more polished. Plus new game mechanics and game play with more general improvements like bugs being dismembered by power weapons and explosions.

Ok before work I played the first 5 levels with each class. Each class more or less has a general theme.

Most weapons can now be reloaded at any point. This includes unused deployables. Even if don't set them off you can reload and any deployed items are removed. This means you can hot reload turrets now. Some weapons though have their own reload mechanics.

Ranger: Pretty much the same as in 2017. The easiest class to play. They have the exact same weapon categories as they did in 2017. Rifle, Shotgun, Sniper, Rocket, Missile, Grenade, and Special weapons.

Has the famous dodge roll and everything. You can choose any two weapons.

Wing Diver: This plays like the Pale Wing or Jet Armor. Only the character is painfully slow when not using their jet pack. Pretty much the best way to operate this character is to use the Jet Pack to make large jumps. You reach your desired height then let go and you sort of glide down the rest of the way. She uses a bunch of energy weapons with their own assorted categories. Laser, Mid range Laser, Plasma, Homing, and Special. Off the top of my head. Still pretty easy to play. Like the ranger can only choose two weapons. Weapons work in one of two ways. Constant use of the players energy bar or like a battery with a pre-set charge that is replenished when you reload it. The ones that take energy directly don't need reloads. Active flying uses energy any time you are not flying even in the air your energy replenishes. You can get on top of some really tall buildings if you are careful or find a high spot to stand on to let your energy recharge. There is even an achievement for getting up fairly high.

Air Raider: A bit harder to do but not all that hard to play. They move like the ranger but their weapons are not as well suited to general combat. The support character. As far as I know the only source of vehicles in the game. Which by the way the vehicles handle a lot better and are more varied. This character also gets things like assorted deployable items like turrets, healing stations, portable shields, etc. Your primary weapon will likely be the sticky bomb (Limpet Gun) with command detonated bombs that can have various effects. Now this is where some of the reloading mechanics get odd. Vehicles and air strikes reload as you kill enemies. This can be team mates killing them, the air strike you just called killing them, or even the vehicle you just used killing them. This class also has the laser painter which it seems a few weapons need a target painted with before they can be fired.

The Fencer: This is actually the hardest class to play by comparison. The Fencer has its own unique control mapping. This is the games tank and heavy weapons class. You get Gatling guns, cannons, melee weapons, shields, and other heavy weapons. Now the catch is this. You can pick any four weapons. Basically two sets of two. The catch comes in that your weapons of choice can affect your movement options as a secondary option. The Fender is kind of slow but if you have the Pile Bunker type weapons its secondary function makes the fencer dash. The shield does something else I haven't quite figured out. Gatling guns give the fencer a high vertical jump. The hammers give the fencer a quick sideways dash. You can combine the weapons and equipment to use certain movements. Like using the Gatling guns high jump and quick switching to the pile bunker and firing off its dash to push you forward. Supposedly these movement options make it easier to use the weapons in some way. Many of the weapons have a lot of recoil like the bug mg's. Cannons seem to have a ballistic arc and relatively slow projectile meaning you have to lead the target and account for round drop.

The first few levels are the bog standard black ants. But not too far in you get to some of the new enemies and even the newer under ground levels.

In regards to vehicles. Only the Air Raider and Ranger can pilot vehicles and sit in the gunner seats. Fencer and Wing Diver can only sit in the gunner seats.

Loving this thus far. I dunno, dumb as it sounds, I think one problem I had with 2017 was how, compared to EDF 2, the player character looked a lot more generic. This one fixes that up nicely with some surprisingly cool character design, and even the ants are nasty as hell with their ability to grab you.

Just playing Ranger right now. For some reason, as much as I love the idea of having a jetpack, or stomping around in Powered Armor, there's something about the Ranger that just feels badass.

Indeed it is an improvement. I have been playing missions in batches of 5 with each character.

I am finding the two characters the weakest against aerial units so far is the Air Raider and the Fencer.

The Fencer Melee weapons are surprisingly useful thanks to their generally high power and fact a charged attack is often ranged.

Gun: You should totally give the Wing Diver a shot. A flying class appeared in three of the games but was left out of 2017 for some reason until it's vita release. The character class is a bit of Glass Cannon but it is a literal and metaphorical blast to play.

Story wise the game has improved. The earth and EDF are not totally helpless this time and fight back with some decent degree of capability early on.

The voice actors are scene chewing hams.

So I am almost done with the ranger on the easiest setting. Some levels are certainly challenging with weapon sets for that difficulty setting.

The underground levels actually have some variety and difference in both look and construction for the most part. Same goes for all the general settings like the city and country settings.

Air Raider is lousy against airborne targets like drop ships due to a very limited weapon selection. But the fact you can use turrets and placeables that heal is great. Airstrikes can be pretty awesome including a laser painting for what look like sub launched conventional ballistic missiles.

Each class needs a different strategy and different weapon set according to level.

Rangers will find themselves using either AR's or Snipers and Rockets and Mex Launchers a lot.

I hate Deroy's and Dragons Both are nasty assholes.

The new enemies are quite nasty sometimes especially the boss scale ones.
