My handle comes from The Children of Húrin by JRR Tolkien. I've had an idea for a Tolkienesque fantasy novel involving a writer who was a No Celebrities Were Harmed version of Tolkien (unnamed- so far. I'll post in the "What's a good name for this?" thread) for several years. Some years after he died, when his books have become literary classics and adapted into big-budget Hollywood movies, it's discovered that he based them on some volumes of a history book from the Standard Fantasy Setting world (with some elements of Neopia from Neopets- also unnamed) he wrote about. Four of the protagonists are raised by elven exiles from that world in a literal Hidden Elf Village (actually a house, more like The Cottage of Lost Play- other Tolkien geeks will get the reference) on Earth and the others are humans with relatives in the world. Refugees from the other world are entering Earth secretly because of an increase in the use of dark magic. The world's basically Arda/Middle-Earth (as a different world) with human Dark Lords.

Well, I'm pretty sure It's Been Done. So it's certainly not undoable.

Yeah, It's Been Done. It was inspired by the Phaery Named Phredde books by Jackie French (Australian writer, one of my favourites besides JRRT.) But the problem is, I've got no idea how to make everything seem plausible. That's what I meant by undoable- undoable without seeming implausible? How, for example, did a couple of elves manage to foster children and throw off people's suspicions about why they never age? Possibly Glamour? (But I know why the Tolkien Expy wrote the books- he wanted to tell people about the shared history between Earth and this other world.)

On the aging, I once read a book (Polgara the Sorceress) in which the main character is essentially ageless. She moves around an awful lot with her many-times great-nieces and nephews.

She kept herself secluded to avoid attracting to much suspicion, and they left town every few decades or so.

One of the more amusing times is when a person notes her seeming agelessness, and chalks it up to her being a physician. After all, those herbalists and doctors know all sorts of ways to keep themselves young.
