Could we perhaps say that the Japanese Empire, while still extant, doesn't control quite all of the territory they had in real life?

Of course. I was thinking mainly just the "Japan" we know today, plus Korea and Manchuria. Also, you can blame it on WWII being different, or blame it on laser beams or rockets or whatever. I basically wanted to set up a "mini" cold war in Asia where Russia, Japan, and China all really hate each other - but that same sort of trying-to-embarass-each-other-on-the-national-stage-hate, not a Nuke 'em hate.

When I close my eyes right now, I see mecha combat taking place. Luckily, I can change the rythem of the combat by listneing to music. I dont know why it happens, but my imagination just needs awesomeness to it invents its own all the time. Right now its mechs, since this RP made me go look a buncha stuff up.

Okay, first post's up here. Just something to let your characters interact*

for now, before an actual mission briefing.

Also, if you want stuff for your characters to talk about - just in case insulting each other based on their appearance and manner of speech gets old - you can assume that their civilian technology and pop culture is about on-par with what we have now, but with more cigars added. They might not have Twitter and Star Wars, but they'd definitely have similar telecommunications systems and "modern" sci-fi. The president is Quentin Roosevelt*

, who is poised to defeat Senator Richard Nixon in the fall and be reelected to his fourth term.

So while we're waiting for everyone to post and get their characters talking, and I'm writin' up mission stuff, I figured I might as well ask something: Where do you guys want to go with this RP? Or hope to get out of it? I don't want anyone to drop it or feel left out because the RP isn't fun, so I'll tweak how I run this to suit your needs.

Also, pretend I'm using the rest of this post to whine about the three people not posting because they're "busy" with their "life" or whatevertongue

cool mecha fighting action is all i ask and want.

good, unstupid inter-character drama comes second and is preferred but not necessary.

I was at work earlier, then checking up some stuff related to the big steam sale. I plan to post in a bit; got the basic idea for the post already, just need to fancy it up.

Hmmm, so one Real Man, and one undecided, so far

[up]I know what you mean. I got back home and saw all those 75% labels, and limited time offers, and had to research if anything was worth it. So far, I heard a lot of good things about Tribes: Ascend, and I liked Starsiege, so I spent the $5 to be a VIP and I'm going to try it out today.

Mech tactics with a certain amount of respect for the laws of physics (I'm not expecting total rigidity or else we wouldn't have the mechs) and a realistic portrayal on the human and political levels. (Translation: do your research. :P )

I'm pretty good when it comes to keeping the physics in line, and the politics are going to be filtered through a Conspiracy Kitchen Sink and a bit of World of Badass, but still at the point where you can feel like it's based on real life (with lasers).

Where I plan on things being a bit less realistic is the combat, since it's been converted into a game (which is fun! Right?) to be a close representation of what happens in the story, but still something that won't be impossible to figure out, and won't require us to say "1.3 seconds after the target was spotted, [name] fire the ion machinegun for 4.7 seconds, using up 23% of the stored energy" and then we've got to time things out to make sure everything's kosher, and soon enough I'm punching my keyboard and everyone's dropping this thing to go to a yuri RP.sad

But yeah, it might sound surprising, but a mech can carry more than ten 7.62mm rounds.[lol] But the representation via turns is that you've got enough for ten turns of firing the machinegun or four turns of the mortar. So if a mech's been laying down supporting fire for that time period, then it's assumed that they've used whatever they were carrying. Otherwise we'd have to sum up dozens of individual bursts to find out when you've used up 5,000 rounds or whatever.

And I didn't notice this was a thing. Neither did Rider but I've PM'd him now and I suspect nman has probably already done that too.

Any Cold War in Asia should probably invovle India/England too. Afghanistan is an old English/Russian Battle Ground and assuming Tibet is no longer a thing, I see no reason why it wouldn't continue to be?

Which way does Mongolia slide?

Mongolia is Empire of Japan.

Everything else has been de-colonialized by this point.

Manchuria is in the Empire. No one's asked about this version of Mongolia beforetongue

Lets see: Well, I'd imagine that it's a sort of buffer zone between the nations. None of the three are able to take it over by force because the other two all would bitch about it. They'd probably be communist, though.

We still got Rabbit to wait for, and I don't want to start leaving people behind before the first mission's even started. In the meantime, you can have your characters interact with the new guy in the room.

Expect who? Rabbit or the briefing?

And if you're bored, you might as well help me design the Memetic Badass who'll be in charge of giving the briefing - he's also going to be the highest-ranking person on the ship, overseeing all the, well, everything. It's quite reasonable to assume your characters already know him. What I have so far: His name is Cliff Gunner, and he sounds like J. K. Simmons - the voice of Cave Johnson from Portal 2, JJJ from Spider-Man, and the President in Red Alert 3. He's about 55 years old, and was a tank commander in WWII until he was wounded in battle, but "the son-of-a-bitch Jerry couldn't even finish the job" so he went right back into the field.

The rumor is that his heart's damaged, so he's got an orangutan heart added in there to keep the blood pumpin'.

Another thing I should mention, since I forgot to answer Wysp's question a while back: If you've got a weapon that has multiple types of ammo available, we can just handwave it as being loaded with the most effective round for the job. All that turn stuff still applies, it's just that the abstraction makes it possible to do that, and I don't want someone thinking "Oh, I only have standard mortar shells, guess I can't target that tank." I'd just assume that instead of a standard HE, the mortar for that turn was something like this. You'd still have to ask if you're willing to use up such an effective anti-emplacement weapon against a tank or whatever, but at least you have flexibility.

Edit: It's been another day, so I just posted the mission brief. Infodump, ho! Rabbit can just make his character late to the meeting. No biggie.

Also, I hope you appreciate that I made the very first mission have multiple ways to go about it, instead of Rail Roading you[lol]

Also, also: I'm drumming up some units that I'll add to the encyclopedia at some point. As for a tac map, I'm mainly going to be using text. You can do what I did and look up the island on Google Earth to get a better idea of the big picture, but the small-scale (well, battlefield-scale) stuff will be in the best place of all - our imaginations.

Also, also, also, doesn't that radar jammer seem awfully close to a Fog of War?
