Yikhezkel drew. Ophion roared behind him.
"Well, here goes," he said, "I Set one monster and attack Legionnaire with Zahak — go, Infected Thunder!"
The Corrupted Dragunity screeched again, generating a ball of lightning before its three mouths which it launched at Legionnaire.

"Called it. Reverse Card Open! Icarus Attack! Take down his backrow!"

"Two things," said Yikhezkel. "First, I chain Pandemic Contagion Infection to your card, so Zahak is now immune to spells and traps and their effects for the reminder of the turn."
The quick-play flipped face-up before following Yikhezkel's other trap — Gozen Match — to the grave.
"Second, since you sacrificed Legionnaire for Icarus Attack, you trigger a Replay, and allow Zahak to attack you directly. Ouch."
Zahak stopped its attack, only to generate a new lightning ball and throw it directly at Regulus.

"See, the thing is..."

Regulus got thrown back by the ball of lightning.

"...there's a reason why I dislike the Lswarm a lot more than I let on."

Regulus' eyes slowly began to glow green.

"The Lswarm, you see..."

A black miasma began to creep onto the gray duel disk.

"...it kind of triggers a reaction in me. To be like Nagare Ryota, yes... that was my dream - and my ambition. But to find a cure for this... affliction of mine, that's why I'm here. And to think I'd find an Lswarm user like you skulking around - irony of ironies, you are also my opponent in the finals!"

I didn't know that.

I'll keep the infection at bay for as long as I can... to make sure none of you end up like... that thing that just attacked me. Everyone. Please.

Believe in me! Regulus thought, and the miasma around his Duel Disk began to subside. He struck a pose and pointed his finger at his opponent.

"So... do your worst, because win or lose, you're not escaping this in one piece!"

"Well, isn't that odd," said Yikhezkel. "I never knew the Lswarm virus could affect humans... perhaps it is because you have a Spirit at your side. Odd..."
His face became uncharacteristically solemn. "We need to talk. After the duel, of course," he said. "Anyway, your go, and do give it your best."

Regulus drew his next card.

"I'll use the effect of Dragon Ravine, sending a card from my Hand to the Graveyard to add a Dragunity monster from my Deck to my Hand," he declared. "I select Dragunity Legionnaire."

A card left his hand as he selected another Legionnaire from his Deck. "I'll then summon Dragunity Dux from my Hand," Regulus said as a falcon-headed warrior swooped to the battlefield, toting a legion's standard. (Dragunity Dux: 1500 ATK -> 1700 ATK) "Thanks to its effect, I'll equip it with a Dragon-type from my Graveyard. My selection is Dragunity Brandistock."

Silver shields appeared on Dux's forearms as the Dragunity monster cried out its approval. (Dux: 1700 ATK -> 1900 ATK)

"Now, to the Battle Phase! Dux! Send that vile excuse for a Dragunity out of my sight! Gale Rend!"

Dux roared as it swung the standard, a gust of razor wind rushing toward the corrupted form of Aklys...

Yikhezkel raised an eyebrow as the corrupted Dragunity was torn to pieces by Legionnaire, not flinching when a blast of wind hit him.

"Do go on," he said.

"And since Brandistock's effect while equipped allows Dux to attack twice... Dux! Attack his face-down monster!"

Dux swept its standard again, sending the winds toward the Set monster...

"Oops, you've activated Evilswarm Hræsvelg's effect," said Yikhezkel, "Which kicks your Legionnaire back to your hand."
The spiked eagle appeared, launching the Dragunity away with a gust of wind before disappearing in a burst of Pixels.

"I'll take my chances where I get them," Regulus replied as Dux flew back into the sky. "I'll end my turn here."

Yikhezkel drew. "Well, whaddaya know," he said, "it seems that Zahak is slightly attached to you. So I'll Summon another copy of him and attack directly."

Another three-headed dragon appeared and shot a ball of lightning at Regulus.

The blast knocked him off his feet, but Regulus managed to right himself in midair before landing easily.

A huge gasp erupted from the audience when Regulus emerged from the explosion - the black miasma had now covered his Duel Disk and was now spreading over the left side of his body.

"You're right," Regulus answered, his voice beginning to shift and distort, "I am rather... slightly attached to it."

Yikhezkel became more than slightly worried. He looked to the side, eyeing his spirit.
"Ophion, have you any idea what's happening?" he asked.
I have not seen anything like this, the dragon replied. Perhaps his spirit would know... you should finish this duel as quickly as possible, one way or another.
Yikhezkel nodded. "That'll be it for now."

Regulus - before drawing - shuddered, subduing the miasma away through sheer force of will.

"I can do this," he muttered, not loud enough for the crowd to hear, but loud enough for his opponent to. "I'll draw! Thanks to you sending Dux back to my hand, I can summon him again!"

Dux swooped back down easily.

"With Dux's effect, I'll equip it with Dragunity Brandistock! Onto the Battle Phase! Twin Gale Rend!"

Phalanx couldn't help but notice the undercurrent of desperation in his master's voice as Dux threw up two waves of gale-force wind in quick succession. Hold on... hold fast!

Peter watched with concern. Regulus was getting destroyed out there- and worse, it seemed to damaging his mind in someway. Yikes. Is this what happens when you get too close to the spirits?

Yikehzkel shrugged as Zahak was destroyed again and the second blast of wind hit him.

Regulus was now in a slouch, compared to his previous posture of previous duels, yes - even practiced ones. By now, his opponent would have figured out why Regulus took extra care to not face him even in the practice field.

But alas, destiny and irony are often two sides of the same insidious coin...

"I'll use Dragon Ravine's effect, discard one, fetch Aklys..." Regulus said with his voice gradually softening. "And that's it for now; I'm ending my turn," Regulus whispered, the last turn taking a lot more out of him than he thought.

Yikhezkel drew. "I'll send your Legionnaire to the grave with Dark Hole and end my turn," he said, activating the spell card that sucked the Dragunity into a wormhole that collapsed on itself afterwards.

"Thank you, Dux... and now I draw," Regulus said, still in a slouch. "With Dragon Ravine's effect, I discard from the hand, and get a card from the Deck. My selection is Dragunity Dux, who I'll summon... now."

Another falcon-headed warrior swooped in from the skies.

"...and I'll equip it with Dragunity Phalanx..."

Bronze armor sprouted on Dux...

"...who I'll be summoning NOW."

...which quickly disappeared as Phalanx came into play.

"Synchro for a level 6... monster," he continued as the two monsters in play began to glow.

"Hark, as the silver spear glows red from bloodshed, so will the day be marked by warfare and combat! Take flight, as dreams of conquest steer thy wings skyward! Synchro Summon! Dragunity Knight: Gae Bolg!"

A silver dragon rider burst from the glow. (ATK 2000, DEF 1100)

"Direct... attack..." Regulus said in a near whisper, the summon clearly taking a lot out of him.

Caramon, having returned to looking at the cards, was suddenly hit by a muscle spasm, causing him to knock a good half of the cards off the tray he was using as a desk and onto the ground. A moment later it came again, this time accompanied by spike of pain through his skull.

"AAAAGGHHHHH......"

The pain decreased after a moment, and he found himself doubled over in his seat, gripping his head with both of his hands, while his head was still experiencing painful jolts every couple of seconds.

"What....the.....hell......."

Daniel looked onto the dueling field. That Dragunity guy -Regulus, was it?- wasn't looking so hot. He was surrounded with a strange miasma and seemed to be straining himself from launching even a single attack.

He jumped at the cry of pain next to him. He turned to find half of Caramon's cards on the ground. "What the-?" Daniel was speechless, frozen. He didn't know what to do. What is going on here? "Caramon...? Are you... okay?" Daniel asked, his voice shaking.

"Believe me...If I knew....I'd love to enlighten you...."

He did his best to sit back up, closing his eyes and attempting to block out the pain. Breath in through the mouth, breathe out through the nose. Breathe in through the mouth, out through nose. He wasn't going to be able to do this properly, but even a little concentration and focus could help him block out the pain. Just focus on the breathing.....

"I....I think I'll be Ok. It just...just caught me off guard." In through the mouth, out through the nose. "I can block it out....a little, anyway..." Focus on the flow, not on the pain.

Daniel reached down to pick up a Meklord Emperor Skiel that was on the ground and handed it to Caramon. "Are you sure you're okay? You don't need a nurse or something?" Daniel was starting to get anxious. First Regulus begins acting strange, then Caramon's doubled over in pain. Something's up, but what?
