"Arthas!" a voice called from behind Art. Were he to turn around, he'd see an abaya-wearing figure. It was shorter than most of the students, but something in its posture suggested it was an old person bent with age and not a student.

Art straightened, that voice, this feeling...and using his full name. His full name. Damn. He did not want to look around, knowing who it was.

He did so anyway.

Yes, it was that same old fortune teller, and yes, she was still calling him by his full name no matter what he tried to say.

"...Yes?"

Hurray for plagiarism!
"Seek for the sword in darkness broken," said the fortune-teller, "In the back of the mind it dwells;
Even though councils shall be taken
Stronger will be the numerous spells.
There shall be shown a token
That Doom is close at hand,
For the sword is forged again,
And forever alone will he stand.
"
She paused, and swiped her hand through the air. "Be weary of the sword that never sleeps, for its toll is greater than you imagine."

Forever alone will he stand.

Nothing had changed. He was still Arthas Caltenrich, with a destiny nobody could want. With that accursed thing, somehow, attached.

Fantasy. That was all it was. He was named for a fictitious character. There was no way, no bloody way, that a fictitious character's goddamned sword could...

He looked like he was beginning to panic quite a bit. Had he managed to change nothing in all these years? He was confident he could resist his destiny, that he would not die like him. That he would live on as he chose.

He managed to get it back together, and said, "I will keep that in mind." The sword that never sleeps. What was it?

"There is darkness in the future," said the fortune-teller. "Beware the sword!"
With that, she hobbled away, leaving Art for himself. For a little while, anyway; after a few moments Yikhezkel chanced by.
"Hey, you look like you just saw a ghost," he said. "You alright?"

...How can they be duelling? This can't be fun... Justin wondered. Marcus and that girl clearly didn't like each other. What was this duel proving? Duel Monsters was just a game, after all... people can make it their problem-solving method all they liked, but to him, there was no meaning in a duel where it wasn't treated as it was: a game.

With a sigh, Justin quietly left the scene, heading for the cafeteria. He could really use a good, fun duel right now...

Art shook himself out of his fugue caused by her last words to him, and he watched her depart, but then Yikhezkel or whatever his hard to spell name showed up. He responded, a little despondent, "N-No, I'm fine."

He managed to cheer up a little. Yeah, no sense getting himself all messed up over this.

His stomach ached. He needed to eat. After he had made his modifications to his deck, he had forgotten to eat, due to his odd feeling.

"I'll see you later."

Jacques had finished rebuilding his deck and was sleeping. It was anything but peaceful however... Images flashed through his mind without anything resembling coherence. A red jacketed man was run through with a blade by a wide-eyed... Girl? Blood. A giant blue obelisk. More blood. Then...

Jacques-kun!

A well-dressed man slowly opened the door to Jacques' room. His neatly combed brown hair matched his disinterested chestnut eyes. In one word, the man appeared average; one wouldn't ever pick him out of a crowd, even if the crowd was made up of women.

The man's cold stare travelled across the room, stopping only on the desk and the sleeping teen. His lips smiled cruely as he drew his left hand from his grey suit's pocket. A miniature Duel Disk was mounted on his wrist, containing a single blank card. He slowly walked over to Jacques, taking the card out of the disk and touching it to his forehead.

"Restriction 666 released..." whispered the man as the card began to glow. A large crest began to write itself along the ground beneath Jacques. "Dimensional interference field deployed. Code S.O.L. activate."

The room burst with a blinding light before returning to how it was. The man smiled smugly and turned to leave. He casually placed the card, which was no longer blank, face-down on top of Jacques' deck. He then calmly left through the door he came into and slipped back into the shadows. No one would ever know he was there...

Gretel tilted her head. "Strange of you to claim that you don't want the duel to get boring. Playing the Swords really isn't conductive to that sort of thing..."

"I draw, and Normal Summon my Gagaga Magician!"

The man who sprang down had half his face covered in a black cloth, and wielded a staff connected to his waist by a chain.

"Unfortunately, his attack points are lowered, thanks to your Burden. I can of course alter his level—" S He waved her hand, and the four little stars on his staff merged into one— "But, that only lasts until the end of the turn.

Gagaga Magician — 1500 —> 1100 —> 1400 ATK

"So, I think I'll end my turn here. Your swords are broken."

Gretel — 3100 LP

  • Gagaga Magician — 1100 ATK
  • 3 face-down Spell/Trap cards

As Art walked into the cafeteria, he saw that Elemental Hero kid. Looked like he was out of the tournament too.

He ordered some food and sat down, wondering if he might be able to duel Justin. Mainly because he needed something to do, something, anything, to get his mind off of the fortune teller.

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

" Au' contraire' my dear child." he said. "While I certainly enjoy the tension of being in a dangerous position, there is a fine line between watching your opponent execute a brilliant turnaround, and simply half-assing your moves. In short: I am not simply going to hand you your victory, you need to earn it. And until you do, I am going to use every resource at my disposal to grind you into the dust."

He drew his next card...

...A sadistic grin spread across his face as he looked down at Gagaga magician with something resembling hunger.

"Well..." he said. "It seems that I was mistaken. If you recall, you challenged me earlier to summon my Alien Overlord, believing it to be my trump card. I'm sure you will also remember my claim that Alien Overlord was nothing compared to the true master of my deck. Well allow me to prove that statement right now! I summon Alien Ammonite, in attack mode!"

Gretel raised an eyebrow. "A grotesque little monster. It's quite appropriate for you."

"In response, I flip up my face-down trap card: Xyz Reborn!"

A great ankh appeared from thin air, more twisted and curved than the typical one. It began to shine, showering the field with little motes of light.

"Xyz Reborn resurrects an Xyz monster from my graveyard is whichever position I choose, and then becomes a Material attached to that monster! Be reborn!" She thrust her hand into the air, the shining shape forming into a humanoid one, holding a whip. "Steelswarm Roach!"

Steelswarm Roach — 1900 ATK

"And, since Xyz monsters do not possess a level, your Burden card is so much decoration to them." She lowered her hand back to her side. "Well? I believe you wanted to summon your most powerful monster?"

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

If she had that card on the field, why wait until now to use it?

Then he rolled his eyes

Ah yes, of course: Because she wanted to wait for a "special moment" this child is nothing but show.

EDIT

He returned his gaze to the battlefield, analysing it.

With that cockroach on the field, I'm not going to be able to summon my trump card. Well... At least in theory.

"Patience child." He addressed Gretel. "First, I activate Alien Ammonite's special effect, to revive my second Alien Hypno. Then I activate my trap card Crop Circles, sacrificing Gagaga Gardna in order to special summon Alien Warrior!"

A reptilliane warrior with silver armour and metallic talons appeared on the battlefield.

"And because Alien Warrior is a level 4 creature, your roach doesn't effect it. Now let's see if you've done your homework. Alien Warrior, attack Steelswarm Roach with Lightspeed talon

The monster charged forwards, shifting into a beam of light that shot towards Steelswarm Roach!

"How disappointing," Gretel commented, looking utterly unworried at the venomous reptile surged at her Roach. "Have the events of last turn already faded from your memory?"

From the ground in front of the beam, a portal tore open and another flash — this one brown — shot upward. An almighty crashing sound rang out, the two shapes regressing to their real forms, the roaring monster straining against the knight who held its claws in his gauntlets.

"Once per Duel, when I am attacked while there are no cards in my hand, I can end the Battle Phase and summon Tasuke Knight back from my graveyard! Final Duty!"

The soldier drew closer, then broke the grapple with such force that the reptilian counterpart was thrown back into the air, while he skidded back along the ground.

Tasuke Knight — 1500 DEF

"Keep struggling, Marcus. You're still entertaining me, but you'll have to try a bit harder than just this if you want to hold my interest."

Marcus chuckled

"Says the girl who's losing."

"However," he continued politely. "I must admit, that last move was actually rather impressive. Perhaps you're not completely worthless. Even if you are just decoration. And I thank you for explaining why you had a weaker monster in attack mode last turn. To be honest, that effect is quite intriguing. Still, I believe its time we ended this."

He smiled darkly.

"I sacrifice Alien Ammonite and my second Alien Hypno, in order to synchro summon Ally of Justice Catastor!! What say you to that child?"

"Two words, Marcus!", she said back, the smile still etched onto her face. "Get lost."

The Roach's insectoid head snapped upwards, and the circling purple orb arced into its antennae, the aura engulfing its entire body. It opened its mouth-gap, a horrifying chittering noise sounding out, and the mighty machine cracked and disintegrated within seconds.

"When a level five or higher monster would be Special Summoned, I can detach one Xyz Material from my Steelswarm Roach and negate that summon!"

The machine in pieces and the insectoid monster still hanging in the air, Gretel kept the same dominant smile on her face.

"You aren't stupid enough to run a Synchro Summon into my effect for no reason, Marcus — you proved that earlier. I do wonder..." She said, sounding thoughtful. "What card are you holding on to? Perhaps Reborn? A Chaos Monster? Unlikely, since both of those could have given you the winning move earlier on..."

"Hmph. Can't just keep things moving, can you?"

Gretel closed her eyes, trying to remember what the other duelist had played so far.

"My guesses are Chaos Sorceror, Black Luster Soldier — although if you can afford to buy yourself a copy of him, then you making it here is entirely explained considering your average skill — and Monster Reborn."

Her eyes opened.

"Play the damn card already, Marcus. I don't have the time for this."

A hint of anger slipped through her mask of smugness this time; a twitch of the eyebrow. Marcus, slowly and much more gradually than he'd thought, was getting to her.

"Fine then, show me the card! Show me your Black Luster Soldier! Show me the Envoy of the Beginning, the monster equal in power to the Chaos Emperor Dragon!"

An explosive shockwave rocked the small room they were in as a collum of amethyst light blasted from the floor, fading to reveal a tall warrior in triangular black armour.

Gretel crossed her arms, the cold smile disappearing in favour of a determined look.

"Oh, very well done. That card only costs as much to own as it did for me to get here from Europe. I rather think the idea of 'sticking it to the uptight bitch' is spoilt when the one doing the rebelling is using a card like that for it."

She shook her head. "Anyway, since you already conducted your Battle Phase this turn, I presume you are simply going to banish one of my monsters. Which one is removed, oh mighty duelist?" Her mouth curved upwards at the last sentence.

Gretel stared impassively as the great soldier raised his sword and spun it once, releasing a thin line of radiant force that caught the brave knight in the stomach. The knight doubled over, and appeared to fold in on himself, fading into nonexistence.
