A few minor updates:

Sakarasou No Pet Na Kanojo starts on October 8th http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-08-09/sakurasou-no-pet-na-kanojo-tv-anime-slated-for-october

Aikatsu also premieres on October 8th at 7:30 p.m JST http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-08-12/sunrise-aikatsu-slated-for-yu-gi-oh-zexal-timeslot

Supposedly, K will have 13 episodes. If those who can read Japanese want to check this, this is the link for the 7th BD volume http://www.neowing.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=KIZX-80

It does indeed say that

...Which only makes things more confusing, since we shouldn't know this yet, and the BDs/DVDs are being released quite quickly

Haitai Nanafa premires on October 6th, and ANN has a synopsis for the short anime as well: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-08-14/haitai-nanafa-tv-anime-to-premiere-in-october

Also there are some strong rumors(but nothing substantiated yet) about Gen Urobuchi being behind Psycho Pass. I've heard that Gen retweeted the Psycho Pass annoucement tweet. But again, these are only rumors at this point so I wouldn't rely on them yet.

That would make sense. Though this'd mean that Nitroplus is taking over noitaminA for the season

Looking forwards to Robotics Notes I guess. I loved Steins Gate and even Chaos Head was okay.

[up][up] That would also explain why it's presentation has been so minimalistic so far. They are trying to sell it with the Urobuchi hype alone.

That seems unlikely. Last time they tried to hide his involvement with Madoka Magica because knowing who the writer is basically spoils the entire plot to anyone who's familiar with him. Obviously they couldn't do that with Fate Zero since it was based on an already published novel, but it seems Gen is supposed to be a shocking twist more than anything else. If they haven't announced his name and the rumors are coming from his own twitter than it might be happening without their consent.

@L Dragon 2

I saw the first Rebuild Movie as camripped version and the quality wasn't bad. I guess it depends on camripper in question.

At quick glance the lineup seems to be really underwhelming, they all look really "safe" without any of the premise that seems exciting

Maybe I'm suffering a massive Gintama withdrawal symptom but I feel like I need to vent something. In the last year or two I feel that now anime has became somewhat stale - probably due to the massive success of K-on now most of the lineup has became Moe fest or Visual Novel based romantic anime geared especially toward Otaku.

I have to admit Steins;Gate was ok and Nichijou is massively entertaining, but everything else has been meh. Maybe I'm just suffering from massive American Hate Tingle case but I remember while obviously still geared toward Otaku anime used to have somewhat "universal" appeal (Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, AKIRA, Ghost In A Shell) or veers into the other direction of making massively awesome Widget Series (FLCL, Paprika, Nichijou, etc). Regardless of what you think of it Evangelion is a DARING piece of work

Anime used to be much more creative and daring to have mature theme, that's why Western Animation looks up to Anime as the limit of what can be achieved via animation. I think the current economic climate in Japan might have something to do with it; animation studio can't afford the risk of funding "high risk-high reward" piece of writing the animation studio and they prefer the safer "Moe", Shana Clone, Harem Series genre instead. Having several official licenser abroad (think Bandai Entertainment) goes bankrupt because they can't compete with fansubs doesn't help either.

Maybe I have become too disillusioned and need to take a break from anime. I hope some interesting stuff come in the future

Let's see... recent anime I've liked have been Another (despite that everyone says it sucked, I enjoyed it), Tasogare Otome X Amnesia (obviously, not for everyone), and Binbougami ga (which is still airing). I'm looking forwards to S3 of Bakuman, and the next season of Hayate.

I think if you find one or two shows you really like you're lucky.

Last year the only anime I added to my best of all time list was Nichijou.

Which isn't to say things like Fate Zero weren't really really good.

But I haven't added to the list this year, so I'm still looking out for something that meets my super-high expectations.

You can't blame it all on the otakus though. Sturgeon's Law applies equally everywhere. I'd suggest not watching anime seasonally and asking for recommendations later.

At quick glance the lineup seems to be really underwhelming, they all look really "safe" without any of the premise that seems exciting

Take a longer glance. Right now I can say that Robotics;Notes, Shin Sekai Yori, and Zetsuen No Tempest are all at least somewhat unusual, and I expect K and Psycho Pass to be as well

now most of the lineup has became Moe fest or Visual Novel based romantic anime geared especially toward Otaku.

That's been going away, actually. The only real moe show airing is Tari Tari (which also has guys), and there's not much in the upcoming season, either. Also; late-night anime have always been aimed at otaku

You're remembering a time period that never happened. There's always been a lot of pandery bullshit, it just used to be harder for foreigners to find. And I can't really vouch for 'universal appeal', but Widget Series are still around. Jinrui Wa Suitai Shimashita, Mawaru Penguindrum, and Joshiraku are all quite recent

Anime used to be much more creative and daring to have mature theme,

Tenchi Muyo and El Hazard came out at about the same time as Evangelion

Indeed, Sturgeon's Law applies equally in all countries and times, but appears to apply less in the past because of nostalgia filter.

In general we can't hold all time greats up against currently airing shows, particularly not if we're looking to enjoy them.

Anime is marketed in Japan, to certain demographics, and since in spite of that I've still been able to find some works I'd even call great when held up to all other media I've seen, I don't object to the state of anime as it is now.

It's not really worse than the American film industry really, there's only one or two films from last year I'd want to re-watch.

[up][up][up]Hey, Tenchi Muyo isn't that great out of having really good characters, but El Hazard was quite a finely crafted series (the first OVA at least. The first TV series was decent too). It knew what it was doing and did it with style and class. The male lead had a backbone without being a jerk, while most contemporary harem or Shonen leads go either one way or another.

Oh, I like both series, but they're not exactly daring or mature

[up][up][up][up]I'd say Import Filter even moreso than Nostalgia Filter, in this case. Digital fansubs lowered the bar for translating anime enormously to the point where just about everything gets subbed these days compared to the 90s. Official licensors were around back then, but they would pass on anything that they didn't think would sell in the NA market, which includes a lot of the really shameless pandering stuff.

[up][up] They dared to try and take on the mantle for having the most over powered character in the history of fiction that isn't any sort of religion or mythology, at least.

Sure, not thematic, but still worth mentioning. tongue

[up]Although that didn't really happen until OVA Series 3, which was in the 2000s and well past Evangelion's debut.

Wow apparently there is such trope as Import Filter - you learn something new everyday. Yeah I agree its not fair to compare the entire history of anime lineup to lineup of one specific season, but I still stand by my statement that somewhat the Moe fest shameless pandering anime has become more common; usually you could find one or two watchable anime every season and I just trying to come up with my two cent on why I think it happened

Obviously I'm really really bored now, I think a break from anime and waiting for reviews and hype to come in is the best course of action for me

Have you considered the possibility that it's you that's been changing? It's pretty common to end up with highly particular tastes after spending some time in a genre

[up][up] Yeah absolutely, I can concur to that I'm not a Troll.

There is only so many times you could watch a Tsundere beat up the lead character. It was funny the first 10 times or so but then after one Shana Clone after the other you obviously became jaded.

However the proper industry response to that would be to invent something new (or reconstruct! like Gurren Lagann - play everything completely straight but increase the scale and Ham Up To Eleven while still being self conscious). Haha I know I'm asking a bit much I should stop bitching now
