this movie's gonna be in 3d? I don't really know what to make of that.
Ooh...glitzy.
Looking for some stories?.......yes.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahProbably gonna get some flak for this, but why cast Tobey Mc Guire? At all? I mean the guy has a perpetual dopey eyed expression, why on Earth would you pick him for the part of Nick? There are actors far more capable of conveying that world weariness needed for the character Hell Daniel Radcliffe or Joseph Gordon Lovett would've been far superior choices.
Secondly, knowing that this is a Baz Luhrman film, I hope he didn't actually put Hip Hop in the film's soundtrack. It didn't really work in Moulin Rouge (save for a few exceptions), I doubt it'll work in 1930's America.
Other than that, it looks good.
Theres sex and death and human grime in monochrome for one thin dime and at least the trains all run on time but they dont go anywhere.Yeah, why use hip-hop when you can use the awesome stuff they actually had back then?

Looking for some stories?I'm sure the music is just there to Hollywoodify the trailer.
As for the casting, I couldn't understand Leo as Jay Gatsby when I first heard about this (mostly because I can't picture him convincingly saying "old sport"...but also because I don't think his voice and appearance really suit the character), and I still can't see it even after seeing the trailer. And while I am a bit confused by the choice of snagging Spiderman G1 as Nick, I don't really have an opinion on it either way. Besides, in the book, Nick is more of a plot device to tell the story than anything, so as long as he can capture Nick's cynical nature, it shouldn't really matter too much.
Still, I've been looking forward to this for a long time, and the trailer makes it look like it shan't disappoint.
Stray observation: Assuming that one flapper seen with Nick is Jordan, she looks perfect for the part, like an actual flapper.

My English class have been studying Gatsby this year, so we're all pretty excited about it. I'm disappointed it's not out till Christmas, though, the original date we found was June/Julyish.
Scepticism and doubt lead to study and investigation, and investigation is the beginning of wisdom. - Clarence Darrow
I wasn't sure whether or not it took place in the 20's or 30's, thanks!
Theres sex and death and human grime in monochrome for one thin dime and at least the trains all run on time but they dont go anywhere.Actually, I think the Hip-hop used in this trailer is a stroke of genius.
And, this being a Baz Lurhamn movie. I wouldn't be surprised if the hip-hop is in the actual soundtrack.
I'm having to learn to pay the priceExplain thy Brilliance!
0dd1: "Old sport" isn't supposed to be convincing. It's supposed to sound affected, and sort of silly.
Using the hip-hop in a "this is how crazy The Roaring '20s were" kind of way? Like what they did with Moulin Rouge.
If that's the intention, then I will have to say that they think Viewers Are Morons.
Looking for some stories?Looking at the trailer, I was thinking how it reminded me of Moulin Rouge. Then "from the director of Moulin Rouge" pops up and I was like oh.
I don't think it'll work as well as it did in that movie. Some of the "modern" aspects injected look interesting enough but the 20's don't really need to be updated; they were plenty crazy on their own. Still excited to see it.
Other than the music, what modern aspects are you talking about?
What I think a lot of people forget is that the book is almost surreal, and is absolutely steeped in imagery. Add that to the larger-than-life roaring '20s, and I can't really think of a director more suited for it than Baz Luhrman.
@Mort: So kinda like how they got punk and grunge artists to play on the Backbeat soundtrack to show how roaring and violent The Beatles sounded then?
Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.^^ The dancing and lighting look very modern. Maybe "modern elements" isn't the right way to phrase it but it sort of looks as though they took everything from the twenties and laced it with the new millenium.
I love the design of the titles; I don't know art, but it seems sort of art deco in style, which fits with the times.
I hope it's good, as I tried to read the book once but couldn't really get into it; maybe the movie will give me a better sense of its appeal.
Meh. They look fine for the period, to me.
If you like old movies, try watching the older Sam Waterston and Robert Redford version of the movie as well. They actually did keep true to the twenties, and the book, if I didn't miss anything. Then try this one and see how they did.
The adaptation that was made in the '70s (don't know who was in it, all I know is that we watched it in my English class the year I read the book) was just meh.
Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle. The one with Mia Farrow? My senior English class elected to watch the made-for-TV version starring Paul Rudd as Nick instead. It was...fine. I suppose. Kind of bland.
If there's one thing you have to give Baz Luhrman, it's that he'll at least do justice to the imagery.
*one Google search later* Yep, that's the one, the Mia Farrow one.
And personally, I'm looking forward to his vision of "the eyes of Dr. TJ Eckleburg." WHICH IS TOTALLY THE EYES OF GOD BY THE WAY I DON'T THINK IT'S CLEAR ENOUGH WITH HOW MUCH THEY HARP ON IT.

Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.I cannot guarantee to anyone that I won't spend most of this movie making Spiderman and Inception references, but I have hope for it.
Maybe not the first time I see it, but when I inevitably watch it with my friend (we both like to make fun of movies whether or not we like them—it's always a riot watching Back To The Future with him especially), hell yes. And Titanic references, with maybe a hint of Shutter Island. (Suffice to say, I can't think of any non-Spiderman Tobey Maguire movies.)

Surprised with all the buzz this trailer hasn't been posted up yet.
So...I hope the pop music isn't in the movie but it is Baz Luhrmann.
