What the hell, hero?

I'm trying to set on a story named "Hidden Blade of Saratoga", about an ancient legend, meteors and samurais. The story is that Mitsuru Kanna and his friend Aoshi Minamino get stuck in the middle of a battle that has, on one side, the government of Japan, and on the other side, the descendants of the Satsuma Clan, who claim that Meiji's pardon to Saigou Takamori is not enough to restore the honor of the country and are bent in a war to destroy the western world. The only thing standing in their path is the Saratoga Claymore, which ended up in the hands of Mitsuru... a designated hero that ended up as The Chosen One solely because he pulled a sword from a stonewall. Really.

Mitsuru's an antisocial black haired "shorty" whose only wish in the life is that everybody in the world just vanish... except Aoshi, the only person he really stands. When he talks to another person, he avoids visual contact at all cost and he even growls if the person is too cheerful.

He has a kind of synesthesia that turns everything that goes in, even personalities, into tastes (it's true that some synesthetes can perceive personalities like tastes or even dates as personalities, check around), but he also has a little glitch on his taste sense that turns sweet tastes into acid tastes (everything sweeter than a red apple tastes like motor oil for him), which happens to mean that everything sweet (in the broad sense of the world, which includes Moe) is more than disgusting (this is called the "Kawaii-o-meter" by Aoshi).

Due to not being very social, only Aoshi (at first) knows that Mitsuru's just shielding his real personality, as he turns out to be sadistic and violent, not respecting anything if he has to beat someone. This will be revealed as soon as he gets the sword, as he's capable to even mortally wound a hostage used as shield in order to kill his foe. Twice.

There's only one thing that he hates more than people and cuteness, and that's weirdness. That's the sole reason he accepted Saratoga's mission to save the world, as the enemies turn out to have plans that rose into the WTF realm. Also, he really needs to vent his aggressiveness into something productive.

He has the Situational Sword, later Loyal Phlebotinum Saratoga Claymore, a 5 ft claymore, usually in the form of a 6 in long baton, that when active makes him faster than a speeding bullet, stronger than a frenzy locomotive, capable to jump a skyscraper in a single leap, besides the fact the sword itself is like an energy vampire, sucking energy of everything, even light (which is the reason it looks like dark, dirty plastic instead of metal).

Only he can activate it and gain its powers because he accidentally found it and activated from his century long sealing. No he must wait another 100 years for the sword to lose his bio-signature. that and the former owner of the sword, Captain Saratoga, won't let him leave the mission the sword was created for.

My doubt is this: I want to make him more likeable towards the end but without really Break the Badass. I just want him to actually acknowledge the motto engraved on his sword: "Tolerantia et societatem sunt pontes quod coniungiere mundi"; "Tolerance and fellowship are the bridges that connect the world". The motto was used by Saratoga, but foe Mitsuru is just bullshit. I want to change his mind so he could actually share this motto.

HOW CUERNOS DO I DO THAT?!!
