I'm pretty sure if you invoke Ideon even with Gunpla, you're going to end up with actual Ideon considering it's apparently a godlike being in the form of a giant robot. It'll just be a very small Ideon.

In point of fact, I finished Puru 2's route in DWG 1 a week or so ago and had pretty much the same reaction. Actually, there are two scenes in the final mission - one where she calls out Loran on fighting by himself like a berserker. It went something like this...

Puru 2: (Qubeley roughly grabs Turn A by the shoulder) "Hey, you can't keep fighting on your own like this!"

Loran: "I'm not afraid of anything!"

Puru 2: "Well I am!"

Loran: (double take) "...what?"

Puru 2: (attempting to collect herself) "I mean, I just... thought I might lose a little sleep if something happened to you, that's all!"

Loran: (...chuckle) "Yeah, we wouldn't want that to happen."

...and then the ending cutscene, where Loran returns the Ship Tease favor.

I'm tellin ya, it was hilarious and adorable and awesome all at once.

And speaking of DWG, been trying to think of other teams/storylines based on the original game, using shows/characters that weren't in that first game.

Current first example:

• "Team Shinn"
  • Shinn Asuka (Destiny Gundam)
  • Mister Bushido (Masurao)
  • Schwarz Bruder (Shadow Gundam) (yes, behold! A G Gundam character as the Only Sane Man!)
  • Mission Control: A-LAWS

Big list of the Humiliation Conga the Gunpla Academy will suffer at my hands in my quest:

• Tieria breaks Wilfrid's nose with a punch.
• Setsuna uses his ELS ability to have crystals start sprouting from Adou's hands, traumatizing him so he can't play Gunpla Battle any more.
• Amia toys with Shia the whole time, but lets her go anyway because they have a plan.
• Tieria uses VEDA to hack the Plavsky Particle System to force assimilation on Team Celestial Sphere, then herds the team to one spot.
• Setsuna attacks them but is blown up, only to reveal the ELS Qan[T], which makes the Transient's Trans-Am Burst look like a goddamn sparkler.
• Tieria keeps them in one spot while Setsuna uses ELS Quantum Sword, Full Power on the Gunpla Academy team. They feel every agonizing moment as they are vaporized, because forced assimilation.
• And to add insult to injury, before Setsuna and the others look for another world to go to, they do a Coop on the Gunpla Academy itself.

Puru Two and Louise Halevy as Smash Sisters? What do you say?

On the one hand, I like Puru Two's canon DWG 1 storyline as-is.

On the other hand, I have no meaningful objections to doing something like that in the context of DWG 2 (which doesn't even have a meta Excuse Plot like 1 and 3 do).

Another team I was thinking of going with:

  • Setsuna F. Seiei (00 Raiser)
  • Full Frontal (Sinanju)
  • Kira Yamato (Strike Freedom Gundam)
  • Mission Control: Archangel

How much hilarity would ensue if Gunpla Academy got bumped off the tournament by three nine-year-old girls?

idk, because I have no idea wth Gunpla Academy even is other than that it presumably is out of Build Fighters.

I'm unclear on why, exactly, the Academy deserve that sort of elaborate revenge fantasy. They're just a slightly cocky sports team who enjoy challenging battles... well, except for Adou, who's kind of an asshole. Unless it's meant to establish that the Gundam Meisters are dicks, which I must admit is entirely canon pre-Character Development.

So, I'm thinking that Schwarz's story probably lifts a bit from Master Asia's, in that he's trying to steadily get his teammates' heads screwed on straight, possibly culminating in a scene where the crazy sword duo both achieve Hyper Mode by finding that serene state of mind.

Taking out Musha Gundam would probably only be the next-to-final battle in their storyline, with the final battle being Shinn and Bushido having one last showdown against Kira and Setsuna in order to settle things.

....so basically, Schwarz's route echoes Master Asia's, but the team's storyline as a whole borrows more from the Domon/Puru/Milliardo team.

Shinn's specific ending probably mirrors his ending in DWG 2.

Anything that can be described as "elaborate revenge fantasy" is probably not a fanfic idea that should be pursued.

The one thing I hate is that the writers backpedal so much, which is why the Gunpla Academy is going to go down in flames. Their team, their school, and the Second Meijin's ideology.

It's less a revenge fantasy and more a statement that you're not supposed to take a hobby seriously that you ruin others' experience for it. The moment you do, if someone gives you a taste of your own medicine, expect no sympathy.

Huh? Again, Adou is kind of an ass, but Wilfrid and Shia are pretty chill and friendly to their opponents. They've certainly done nothing that warrants torture as an object lesson. It's also severely OOC for Setsuna if he's post-Trailblazer. I mean, this is the guy who designed the ultimate war machine in the solar system to be a tool for peaceful conflict resolution.

It's less kicking puppies and more crushing a win-at-all-costs ideology. (Hence Setsuna channeling Harold Cooplowski at the DMV.)

The fact that they win flawlessly via plothax is also a point against them.

Also it's less kicking puppies and more of Setsuna going "so you've carved a trail of tears and broken dreams to arrive and stay at the top? Now feel the pain of those tears and broken dreams carved into your bodies in one fell swoop! Quantum SWORD!"

(p.s. there's also some stuff about how CB's intervention did more harm than good, so it's not all a stomp-for-laughs fic)

Any champion in a professional tournament environment is going to have left a trail of broken dreams and crushed hopes behind them simply to become champion. It's an unavoidable consequence of the competition, particularly one that involves supposedly "amateur" sports.

I mean, most of us probably beat out other candidates for our jobs. If we're in managerial, people's careers were derailed so we could do what we do.

You kidding? That's exactly the opposite of how Trailblazer-era Setsuna likes to resolve conflicts. Unless you're called Ribbons Almark, and the idea of putting him on the same tier as a somewhat overenthusiastic school sports team is laughable. I mean, it's not like they do nothing to soften the blow when they beat someone - Wilfrid in particular is actually pretty good at offering praise and encouragement to defeated opponents. Even if Setsuna did feel they'd overstepped the mark, he'd just sit them down with whoever they'd upset and encourage them to talk it out. The guy only fights if people are unwilling to talk, and he always tries to keep it restrained and proportionate. If he got into Gunpla Battle, Tatsuya's 'that's a nice kit, so I'll try not to damage it too much' fighting style seems ideally suited for him.

Of course, all of the above assumes that he could get over the fact that they used tiny plastic Gundam figurines to fight each other in the first place, as opposed to, say, using them as artwork to promote world peace, or snuggling with them under your pillow at night.

Not to this extent, not when combined with the second Meijin's ideology. You could argue that the Gunpla Academy feeds on the broken dreams of others instead of using them as inspiration.

Don't really care how sportsmanlike they are, they're a symbol of the second Meijin's ideology, and to utterly crush an ideology you must find what symbolizes it and annihilate it so completely that the next Second Meijin wannabe is going to feel it.

In fact, I think that's the biggest tragedy in GBFT (aside from the Crossbone reduced to jobber status for its first animated appearance): despite the Third Meijin's efforts, he's made very little headway in countering his predecessor's ideology.
