Super Mario World VS. Sonic The Hedgehog (Genesis)

Which do you like better? (i'm hoping this dosen't turn into another case of apples n' oranges, like my Mario 64 Vs. Nights topic)

Personally, I pick Sonic The Hedgehog.

Super Mario World, no contest. World is the best 2D platformer in the Mario series, and probably the best 2D platformer ever.

The title said Super Mario World, not Yoshi's Island.

Mario World. Sonic 1 is great, but can't compare to Mario World's insane amounts of secrets. Had so much fun discovering new parts of the map back in the day, really wish Nintendo would do something that crazy awesome in a new game one of these days.

Yoshi's Island is great, in a "baby's first platformer" kind of way.

If it was Sonic 3, I would pick Sonic.

But I think Super Mario World is better than Sonic 1.

Yoshi's Island is far, far superior to Super Mario World. Super Mario World is quite a lot better than Sonic the Hedgehog (though it's great in its own right). Best 2D Mario platformer? Super Mario Bros. 3. Best 2D platformer of all time? Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Although Returns is giving it a hell of a run for its money.

This post is kind of full of right but also kind of full of wrong.

Eh, they're both equally awesome games in my book.

That's how people generally react to me.

Why is there a sudden need to rank classic games? Can't we say that there's the good, the average, and the crap and leave it at that?

This topic sounds like an excuse to bait Mario vs. Sonic wars.

But since Mario vs. Sonic is no longer relevant, it's an entertaining thing to discuss. I don't see anyone getting angry here; it's all in good fun.

I'm going with the game where you bounce around on fuzzies in the sky on the back of dinosaur while wearing a cape like the mighty Thor.

While personally, i prefer Mario world, Sonic had a bigger impact. While Mario World definitely refined the gameplay of old Mario games, Sonic kickstarted a whole series from the ground up, and was able to have it's own identity. But in the end, yeah, Mario World.

People still have Mario vs Sonic fights? Let's have a Pokémon vs Digimon fight next...

It would probably be more fair to compare the first Sonic game with the first Mario game. The Sonic series was brand new and didn't have time to Grow the Beard yet, while by the time Super Mario World came out, Mario had a good three or four games under his belt. That said, I do like the first Sonic game a bit better than the first Super Mario Bros. game.

Oh, Mario World, without question. That game was incredible. I never cared for the Sonic games. Mario World, though, was pure awesome.

I like Sonic as well, but World is a lot better than the first Sonic game. A more fair comparison would be with Sonic 3 + Sonic & Knuckles. By that point Sega had refined the gameplay and it was a lot more fun to run around Mobius.

So which is better, Super Mario World or Sonic 3? I'll let you decide! But the answer is Super Mario World.

Oh please, Poke vs Digi only comes into play when a new generation of Pokemon is announced and people still think "IT LOOKS LIKE A DIGIMON!" is a valid complaint.

Now, I like the gameplay of both after they were refined, but I agree completely that Super Mario World VS the very first Sonic game is no contest whatsoever.

It's gotta be Mario World for me, mainly because I grew up with Super Mario World.
