Mid-Review Sketch Show

14 links, brought 1 person here.

I'm failing to see how this is different from just general "Video review show". Every video reviewer I've ever seen does at least some form of sketch on their show. Even Film Brain does sketches now and then.

In any event, this is really not thriving, and I'm not getting it.

Oh, man, this trope. I seem to remember bringing this one up for Creator Bashing before, and it still has some thinly-veiled ire against That Guy With The Glasses and its imitators in the description.

So, what does the third paragraph add to the description?

However, these sketches can be very divisive among the reviewer's viewership, especially when reviewers get particularly carried away with their on-camera shenanigans, some even making videos where the Theatrics outweigh the actual review portions signifigantly, when they'd much rather just listen to the critic in question just talk about the actual work instead of producing a full-fledged sketch show with occasional review bits thrown in for good measure. Following this, what one viewer may declare a reviewer's Crowning Moment Of Awesome may very well be considered useless, unfunny excess baggage by another.

Oh, that's surprising, it add's nothing at all. "Your Mileage May Vary" continues to be the most redundant phrase on tv tropes, and people who overuse it are essentially saying "I have an opinion that is controversial. Therefore, I must try to imply that it's not my opinion." It's like people who used to say "this troper" when they really should just say "I."

Anyway, this is a trope. There are plenty of people who do video reviews without sketches (For example, Peaugh does reviews of Transformer toys without any sketches). Also, even if the trope was omnipresent, it still has a specific meaning (Sketches in addition to the review content). Not sure why this one doesn't get more love.

Well, it is a very narrow trope as it is (review videos aren't that numerous), so I'd be hesitant to call it unhealthy.

I think it would be enough to clean it up to make it more neutral. It's a legitimate trope, even if "everyone's" doing it.

Yes, that paragraph in particular is what I meant. I've wanted to cut it entirely before, but wasn't sure if it was OK. That and most of the TGWTG video reviewers were inspired by MST3K, which has always had cutaways to silly gags and linking material.

So should it be cut or not? I noticed the unhyphenated title is locked.

Too narrow to be a thing?

Seven examples isn't too narrow.

Is too. </sarcasm>

Seriously, this seems way too specific to trope. If all we can find is seven examples, the list hasn't budged ever, and no one's entry pimping it, then I don't think it's a thing.

Seven is more than three, so I'd say it counts as tropable at least.

As I see it, this bears an uncanny resemblance to Cutaway Gag — it's essentially "cutaway gag in a review show".

Could perhaps be merged with that one.

[up]It's really more of a Big-Lipped Alligator Moment, since it's more than just a cut.

YKTTW Bump

Has there been any movement on this? (deleted thing I already mentioned)

I'm also wondering if we have a genre entry for shows like Svengoolie or Count Gore DeVol, a show that runs B Movies late at night with host segments discussing the film and/or making jokes at its expense. This is the genre MST 3 K itself started as.

I'd say, leave it be and cut out that paragraph about it being YMMV. To me it seems like it's definitely a trope (more than a cutaway gag, but not a BLAM either since it usually has some context).

It's obviously highly medium-specific, and to be honest I've never understood this whole aversion for medium-specific tropes.

A very rare trope is still a trope, but, by definition, a trope still needs to represent some sort of meaningful pattern as opposed to a coincidence. For an example, if a pattern is only visible in Ugandan literature in the 1970s, it's still a trope.

That's from the Too Rare To Trope page. It's a meaningful pattern, but only visible in video reviews.

That's what I'm thinking as well. And I don't get the aversion to them, either; there are several tropes specific to Game Shows that simply won't work anywhere else, and no one's really complained about them.

The aversion to medium-specific tropes is because a lot of them seem to have their origins in Fan Myopia (as its creators tend to be fans of the medium in question and assume it's "medium-specific" because all their examples are from that medium) and end up attracting a number of examples outside the medium in question.

If anything, this isn't medium-specific so much as genre-specific; note that MST 3 K is listed as an example on the page.
