[up][up] First person to hate Chitanda in this thread. Interesting.

Actually, I hated Chitanda for being bland, back when the show started.

Eventually my perception shifted, and now I regard her as something like a cute little puppy.

In this case I don't think her personality is directly related to the Ship Tease or Shipping though. That's more the show itself.

You dislike Chitanda for being bland but not Oreki.

Huh.

Well, my issues with Oreki haven't changed. I still think he's an unlikely high schooler who has some dull issues (which the original light novel author probably thought distinguished his character nicely).

I'd like to reiterate that as a whole I still do like this show though.

Personally I wouldn't say I hate Chitanda but I do think she's by far the weakest character of the group and to make matter worse she got so much attention over Satoshi and Mayaka. Especially the last one got shafted, in 22 episodes the only time she got any form of attention was during Kanya festival and even in that arc it wasn't the most important issue.

I'm not really sold on Chitanda either. I mean, as her character type goes, she's better than some others I've had the displeasure of witnessing, but it's still not something I can actually like.

At least Oreki grew on me.

I liked Chitanda to start with, largely because she made Houtarou do things and Houtarou doing things is interesting.

She started to grate during Kanya Fest, though. All of the other characters were getting interesting scenes and strong character drama and Chitanda was a Cute Anime Girl During Cute Things. Compared to expectations and the manga club and blackmail? Boring. Really, really boring. She arguably has character development, but everyone else has their development tied together in a really strong, consistently thematic way. She doesn't. She was the worst character during the best arc, and that really hurts.

Some of that irritation subsided afterward, but it dragged the two episodes after down a little.

I like Chitanda and Oreki. And all the other characters.

I like all the characters too.

Episode 22: Feels. Feels everywhere. Got trolled by the confession. It's okay. At least Houtarou knows what he feels.

There better be an OVA or something. Aside from the one in the pool.

[up]

There should be one more, given the episode count per Blu-Ray.

Also why are you spoilering? It's been more than one week already. :P

I got wayyyy too emotionally involved in this anime.

I was practically yelling at Oreki to tell Chitanda his feelings in 22. At least we know Oreki really likes her and that he's changed through the series.

I REALLY hope there will be another season damnit. And I want it now. More mundane mysteries for them to solve!

Finished the series over the last week and a half. Yet another winner for Kyo Ani.

Needs a second season badly, though.

Finally got a 720p version of the pool OVA, and it was delicious candy for my Hyouka-starved soul.

Mystery was pretty lame, but it was nice seeing the Classics Club play around. Houtarou's also looking at some very interesting places... ye gods, the shipper in me is going wild.

So, I decided to watch this around when it started, but it got shelfed for unrelated reasons. And I had some time over now. I've got a habit of writing a running commentary when I watch things so I don't forget it, and if there are tropes I want to add.

First thought: "Oh, another locked room mystery, going into details about the locks and stuff. This is like Umineko all over again." That was at episode 1, not 8, where it really got into it and they brought in Knox's Decalogue, and Houtarou employed some chessboard thinking (but not on the right person). Of course, the mysteries here are much lighter, and I think I figured them all out, within reason. Though I did wonder why it was even a doubt about what Irisu actually wanted from him, motivations aside. Wasn't that obvious from the start?

Whiskey chocolate is really tasty (two great tastes together, what can be better?), and it's not actually hard to get drunk from it (it seemed strong enough), especially if you've got a low tolerance. And while I wanted to see more of drunk Eru, I did like it was kind of played more like a funny background event, rather than making a huge deal out of it, which is what you'd usually expect whenever someone gets drunk on actual alcohol (in school, even).

I liked Houtarou's reaction when Eru said getting angry took too much energy. She spoke his language. And naturally, a big thing was made out of it. And his disappointment when she said she was joking. Good shipping moment.

In that film mystery, I think they gave Houtarou a little bit of an underserved hard time about him not getting the right conclusion, even if it was a plausible explanation. It's not like anyone else had a better idea. I had the same idea up until the rope was revealed.

It was funny when he read up on the tarot cards, and found out what the Strength meant.

I found it interesting that I understood the alternate reading of Anshinin/Ajimu immediately, since it appeared in Medaka Box, and I figured out the meaning of it. I don't usually figure out stuff like that, especially as I have a similarly bad name memory as Houtarou.

"I'm just a little... curious." And they treated him like he's a clone, or very sick. And Eru is curious about his curiosity... That was one of my favourite scenes. Aside from when Eru does her half-lidded, doubting stare at Houtarou. That reminds me of Haruhi. And Kyou. No connection there. *cough* Actually, as cute as she is when she's happy, she's a character who works well with harder expressions, unlike Mayaka, who does better with positive expressions.

Overall, I liked the development in the characters. Well, Houtarou and Eru, at least. He certainly got more curious, and she got better at reasoning out things herself. I can also relate to Eru a lot. I'm not as forward (closer to Houtarou in that regard), but I do get curious about random things, and I am as direct as her, often skipping introduction of what I'm talking about. The other two I don't think really developed as much as was simply elaborated about them. They did change a little, but not much, and most of their storylines were focused on fleshing them out. I do think Satoshi worked well as a, let's call it deconstruction of the type of character who knows a lot but ultimately solves very little.

I actually liked Irisu as well. Ruthless, but not with ill intent. She also gives me the impression of being distinctly softer than she presents herself.

I also like the rather casually affectionate nature of Tomoe. Not so extreme (in either direction) as you often see in anime. Randomly, the siblings' names together are basically Hotaru Tomoe, though not spelled the same way.

Updating the trope pages:

As translations for Volumes 5 and 6 of the Hyouka novel series are readily available we should be updating the trope pages to include tropes of these new releases and the character pages for new developments. The new novels contain some extremely important events that need to be shown on the page as soon as possible. I hope anyone reading this will give the love that the page desperately needs.
