Anyone know where the hell I can take one?

I've already tried my mental health clinic and my university. No luck.

Clinic said "we only give IQ tests to those who really need them"

I will be honest, I don't really understand the fascination with IQ tests. Even assuming that they measure with a sufficient degree of precision some of the aspects of intelligence (which is probably true for clinical tests, and almost certainly false for online tests), why would one need or want to know that?

I mean, wouldn't it be better to focus on accomplishments, and on learning how to use efficiently the minds that we have?

Because apparently having a number for everything is really important.

You culd literally fart and attempt to read it to get a better idea of your IQ than an online test.

One thing that instead fascinates me, and which I would like to learn to do better, is rapid mental calculation and mnemotechnics. They are of relatively limited practical utility, except as party tricks; but these are skills that can be trained, and with which most people don't bother learning.

They are the closest thing to mental Charles Atlas Superpowers that exists.

They're not going to give you one because you don't need it.

The only real usage for an IQ test is for psychiatrists to decide whether or not what someone has is either a learning disability (Where you have average or above average intelligence. Things like dyslexia or ADHD) or an intellectual/developmental disability (Where it's well below average, such as with mental retardation.) They're not accurate except in that one case.

They take hours to complete. A psychiatrist and other mental health practitioners have much better things to do than to give someone a test that's already not accurate for anything but that one case.

Taking away three hours of a psychiatrist's time is taking away three hours from when he can treat people with things like schizophrenia just so someone can feel validated.

You're just wasting their time.

Well, if you really want one and are willing to pay, I know that there are institutions that do that seriously. For example, the ones which Mensa accepts are reasonably reliable, as far as I heard.

I don't much see the point myself; but if you are curious, you can certainly get tested.

As for the whole "mind training" thing, I think that mind training games and the like are probably nowhere as efficient as studying a new language or a musical instrument or the basics of some scientific discipline.

@Completion

Hmmm. I see.

@Carciofus

I think it would be nice to have a somewhat precise measure of how smart(or stupid) I am.

[up] Well, the problem is that they're not precise so it's mainly just used for one thing. Dyslexia/ADHD/learning disabilities and developmental disabilities can cause the same thing even though they're different - failing grades in school. It's used to differentiate between whether the person is slow or has something that can be easily mediated by changing a few things in how the person is taught. Other than that, they're not precise at all.

I've never had one, but I'm pretty sure I'd do ok. You could just go see what mensa recommends.

Bet you didn't see that coming

Laziest answer:

Watch an episode of Jeopardy, keep a running tally of all the right answers you get, multiply that by 100, divide by your age. Treat that is your IQ.

If you don't have a tv, go to the nearest magazine rack and buy a book of trivia. Keep a tally of every right answer you get, multiply by 100 and divide by your current age. Treat the result as your IQ.

If you figured out a way to cheat on these tests or found an excuse to avoid it entirely, then congratulations, you are actually smarter than the test.
