I'm not sure he's really hated by the wiki at large, just that Retsupurae made a lot of waves about him and their fans invaded this thread.
Personally I think he's terrible, but I'd rather let people who like him have this thread to themselves anyway.
Groovy.Hmm, makes sense to me. And also, personally, I think it's kind of pointless to argue about taste. :/
Eh, I'd argue that having good or bad taste isn't necessarily as subjective as people tend to claim, but that's just my opinion.
Insert witty and clever quip here. My page, as the database hates my handle.Well, my opinion is obviously superior and anyone else's sucks.

I thought I'd post this here, since it explains a bit about why the guy is so popular.
So, I just want to say one thing:
To anyone who says he makes these videos for free: no. Let's say he gets 8 cents per view. That might be either too much or too little, I don't know. Anyway, let's say that, on average, each of his videos gets 3 million views. I know some make more and most make less, so that's a rough average. Now, let's do the math. .08 dollars * 3,000,000 views = 24,000 dollars per video. and he makes a lot of videos per day.
Yeah, how free does that look, huh?
Anyone who assigns themselves loads of character tropes is someone to be worried about.Yeah, recording equipment's not free! ...Wait, what?
Of course, by "he makes them for free", I mean "he makes them and doesn't get paid for it".
Anyone who assigns themselves loads of character tropes is someone to be worried about.Heard vaguely of him, mostly from comments trolling Markiplier for copying him. Which— *checks vids* yes, yes he did. .
I just assumed he's popular because he's physically appealing. Mark is more vocally appealing, though he likes to play at being attractive too (because the similarities weren't blatant enough)
I'm a skeptical squirrelJust went and watched his Trouble In Terrorist Town video. And, of course, he keeps killing people completely on a whim, which in just about every TTT server is the number one thing you shouldn't do.
Of course, now TTT is going to be inundated with hordes of people who got into it via Pewdie and think that RD Ming (random deathmatching - killing or attempted killing at random) is fine. As someone who was one of the first people to play TTT (not so soon as to play it when it was just a variant in Zombie Master, though) and a big fan of it, this makes me very sad.
Anyone who assigns themselves loads of character tropes is someone to be worried about.Hardly a big insight of mine, but Pewds is popular because that's what every teen boy wants to be, the douche from Despicable Me.
Antonio: My dream is to one day play video games for a living.
Margo: Wow! You are soooo complicated.
It was thoughtless, yeah. "Every youtuber" would be more appropriate.

I'm a skeptical squirrelCrossposting from the Markiplier thread:
From what I've seen of either Markiplier or Pewdiepie, it's that they work best when they have someone else for their personalities to bounce off of. The videos with them doing multiplayer games are entertaining, but the single players ones are...not so much.
Also, you have a very narrow view of human nature if you equate all teenage males with that.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Whee, thread necromancy!
I'm just curious at how he reacted to the relevation that Ellie is a lesbian in the new The Last Of Us DLC. I don't watch his videos because of my stance on the guy, but I'd like to know. If I had to guess, I'd say he reacted in a piggish, Girl on Girl Is Hot way, though I could also totally see Pewdiepie being a homophobe.
Anyone who assigns themselves loads of character tropes is someone to be worried about.Finished his walkthrough of Ao Oni. Oh man, it was hilarious.
I also watched his Black Ops games. Holy crap, he's a beast.

I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel. All this Pew Die Pie hate everywhere is making me sad. look at the comments in this video.
"hey hitler whats up"
"What's it like having shit taste?"
"There's nothing nice about Pew D Ie Pie."
"To think Rapists and Murderers are behind bars yet Pew Die Pie fans are allowed to walk free."
What's it like having shitty tastes? It sucks. The only thing I can do to avoid this kind of thing is to just confine myself to Pew Die Pie's videos and fanbase and never go anywhere else. And honestly, the only reason I don't is because I feel so guilty about liking his stuff now that I can barely watch it, even if I like it. And most people think his fanbase is shit, as well. I mean, if my tastes are really that shitty, can someone please fix them?

Don't feel guilty over liking him. He's a great guy, even if you don't find him funny.
Besides, people claiming that he's as bad as Hitler, or that his fans are rapists, proooooooobably aren't sane, anyway.
He's at least better than Dark Syde Phil (not trying to derail here).

On my wave, passing oooooooonIt's just Retsupurae fans taking things too far and too seriously as usual. Best just to ignore them, like the Retsu guys themselves do.
I'm personally not a fan of his overreactions to things but I'm also of the opinion that there's a place for everything. There are all types of people therefore we need all types of LP'ers to appeal to this huge, diverse audience.
Also if you want to record newer games at high quality, it apparently costs a good chunk of change. It takes a serious commitment and investment. IMO, if you put that much into it, you shouldn't be making videos for free because that would be a waste of all that time and money.
I wish i had that much money... My shitty PC can't even record emulated Final Fantasy VIII at high quality without slowing down horrifically. Even a "decent" gaming PC is like a $1000 prebuilt at least. I would figure he's spent a good deal more than that. So if I forked out a few grand to make videos, I'd want to see some return on my investment.

I feel like the only person in the world who is completely ambivalent to Pew Die Pie. As in, I consider him to be "okay".
"Monsters are tragic beings. They are born too tall, too strong, too heavy. They are not evil by choice. That is their tragedy."I liked Pewdiepie for a while. Then I lost interest because, outside of his highlight videos, he just wasn't quite funny enough to catch me. Then I heard him state that he was Only in It for the Money, more-or-less, and came across the videos with the rape jokes and what was essentially pig fucking, and that's when I started to loathe him. There was other evidence that he was kind of a scummy guy, but I've lost the link and forgotten exactly what that evidence was, so it's irrelevant.
Also, I don't care how nice or expensive the equipment is, Pewdiepie could make that money back with a single video, maybe two. And assuming no giant jump in production quality from when I last saw his videos, there can't be that much effort put into them besides the actual recording itself - pre-made opening graphic, pre-made ending graphic, pre-recording for the end bit, and the title card, which he probably puts more effort into making (or obtaining) than the entire rest of the video. Each of those parts takes work, but that's work that's already been done, and thus is basically infrastructure. Editing takes work, yes, but I'm sure he's got that down to a science if he hasn't hired someone to do it for him.
A very rough estimate here: Let's say each video, from recording to setting it to upload, takes two hours. (The actual upload time takes longer but requires no actual effort so I'll discount it) Two hours, of course, is 120 minutes. Going by my earlier math, that means that Pewdiepie makes $2,000 per minute of effort put into a video. Thirty minutes of his time could put a kid through a year of college. In the time it takes you to read this post, you'd have enough money to by a Playstation4.
I think a part of the reason that I dislike him is that, even if I acknowledge his wit and charm, is that I don't think he really deserves that much money for the content he creates.
Anyone who assigns themselves loads of character tropes is someone to be worried about....I didn't realize YT paid that much holy shit.
It doesn't. It's just that you get paid in views - and Pewdiepie gets a lot of views.
Anyone who assigns themselves loads of character tropes is someone to be worried about.Late reposnse: A video maker might see $24.00 per million views, not $8,000. It would be great if it paid that well, but it just plain doesn't. We had ads on the Echo Chamber web series. In two seasons it brought in maybe $40 altogether. Not enough to pay for the coffee consumed during editing. You get paid for ad clicks, not ad displays.
Goal: Clear, Concise and Witty
Hmm, I have a rather neutral opinion towards him, but I was surprised at the amount of backlash involved. I found him by accident, watched a few videos, some of them a I liked, and I can't say I hated any of the ones I saw. Only much later did I discover all that backlash.
In any case, he doesn't seem very popular here on tvtropes, am I right?
