[up]I like the idea of merging them into one trope. It's really what the trope is about: Contrasts to show how the characters act in relation to each other. However, there are works with just a single style, where they highlight the overall tone of the series. Usually even in those cases, there are exceptions that show the contrast more clearly.

Instead of the Personaliteye in YKTTW, how about we improve the existing Good Eyes, Evil Eyes, with the best parts of that YTTKW and the chart of my Eye Detail YKTTW? I'll work on a sandbox version.

I see no reason to combine them. They are not only used as contrasts, they are just as often used stand alone.

They are fine as they are, all we need is the missing supertrope.

Okay, here is my idea of the supertrope in the sandbox: Kind Eyes Harsh Eyes

My suggestion is that we turn Good Eyes, Evil Eyes into that article (maybe keeping the old name if it's too much hassle to change, but it'll be a misnomer).

I feel tareme and tsurime should be merged because they only work —and hence, artistically only exist— in relation to each other. As the Tareme article notes, the trope only applies if there are Tsurime characters to be seen in the work. They can work as articles either way, but it seems to me a single article reflects better how they are used as visual tropes.

I like where you're going with this. I wholly support the trope merging, and the addition of the supertrope to include these concepts. I think it would be much better to tweak the definition of tsurime/tareme a tad, (because there's not a real convincing reason to have a separate trope for a single geographic regions interpretation of a universal trope), but what you're doing here seems like a reasonable substitute.

I see no reason to leave them as they are, Sackett, and since they do not exist except in contrast to each other, it makes sense to merge them.

They aren't always in direct contrast the way Kind Eyes Harsh Eyes says, though, and that doesn't cover everything eye shapes show. An eye with a long outer corner shows exoticness from what I've seen. An eye like a D rotated 90° counterclockwise is happy, whilst 90° clockwise is stern, but they have the same curvature. What about merging everything into the Personaliteye YKTTW ('cept tsuri/tareme if anime stuff has to be separate) and only taking examples that show the character's eyes are different to the rest of the cast?

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

[up] I think what you refer to is meant to hint at long eyelashes, often used as a mark of exotic beauty.

In my Kind Eyes Harsh Eyes I aimed to combine the best of the current Good Eyes, Evil Eyes and the Personaliteye YKTTW (both seemed lacking to me). There is a lot more that can be said about eye shapes, but it needs to be fitted into some overall framework and not just have new shapes added piecemeal. I'd welcome anyone to broaden either of my writeups. (Kind Eyes Harsh Eyes and Sliding Scale of Eye Detail)

To sum up my ideas:

- Rework Good Eyes, Evil Eyes to be broader (already the description and the examples go beyond the title) and act as the supertrope for tsuri/tareme.

- Discard the Personaliteye YKTTW; too much overlap with Good Eyes, Evil Eyes.

- Restrict tsuri/tareme to a particular style that I've only ever seen in Japanese works and others copying that style (and even in Japan is not monolithic or the only one used). So it would still be narrowly defined, but not by geography.

- Merge Tareme Eyes and Tsurime Eyes, to follow the supertrope as being one article about contrasts.

- Launch my Sliding Scale of Eye Detail as a companion trope.

This is how I suggest we fix this issue. Any suggestions/objections/advice?

I still oppose merging.

All we need is the missing supertrope.

Crown Description:

There seems to be a relationship in all fiction between the shape of a character's eye, and the personality of that character. Tsurime Eyes and Tareme Eyes designated and contrasted two prominent designs, but have been restricted to Asian examples only, and there is no currently present supertrope to examine the differences.

What action should be taken to remedy the situation?
