@ Anom

As per earlier mod posts in this thread, it would result in Premium features being removed from the user's account.

-not gonna look through 800 posts-

Any plans to have .gif avatars available for premium accounts?

what about a separate feature to disable ads?

A way to get rid of the friendly, civil forum banner?

  1. Eddie has shot that down.
  2. You can already disable them for 4 months by paying 20 USD.
  3. What does this mean?

Why would you want to get rid of that?

I hardly even notice it and my posts bear that out

1: Why?

2: Didn't know about that. good to know.

3: Whenever you post there's a banner saying "Everybody: The wiki is only interested in hosting a friendly, civil forum. Check out the rules. We do enforce them."

That bugs the crap outta me. I'd probably grab the premium acc if that banner was removable.

That's a bit odd, but I suppose I don't see why that couldn't be done. Obviously, you'd still be as subject to the rules as everyone else, but if its really bugging you that much...

Your intense dislike of the banner politely telling you not to be dick places you under suspicion, if only mine.

  1. Because it's his wiki? He didn't give a reason (that I recall), although I suspect it's just personal preference.
  2. Yeah, it's under your forum profile settings.
  3. Oh. I doubt you'd get him behind that.

I do know one way of disabling it on Firefox, but I couldn't actually endorse said method here, especially with the ad situation…

Note: I don't actually use it here, but I have used it to remove clutter on my Yahoo Mail page.

"Your intense dislike of the banner politely telling you not to be dick places you under suspicion, if only mine."

I've been here long enough to remember when the banner wasn't around. I also remember when Jesus fought Satan disguised as Santa while being supported by lumberjacks. Sleep deprivation made for the greatest R Ps.

"Because it's his wiki? He didn't give a reason (that I recall), although I suspect it's just personal preference."

Fair enough.

"Yeah, it's under your forum profile settings."

K, next time I've got some money in the bank I know what I'm doing.

"Oh. I doubt you'd get him behind that."

Probably not. Still worth askin'

"I do know one way of disabling it on Firefox,"

I think I know what you're talking about, but then I'd have to use firefox. Not worth the pain.

Do we have a situation page set-up yet btw? If not we're so calling it "The Google Incident 2: Electric Boogaloo"

What I'm talking about is actually a helper extension to another one for GUI selection of HTML elements on the page. The main extension of it I currently have disabled to see if there are any ads that genuinely interest me. There have been a couple, but not much.

The Second Google Incident just apeared on the Administrivia index page. It is relevent to this topic because of:

"The forum will no longer host unreasonable numbers of avatars for free: Tropers who want more than 40 avatars simultaneously hosted will have to pay for them. "

So that is the final conclusion? Also, someone should make a post in the GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS thread.

Doesn't look like any aspect of the new "shop", or any penalties for having +40 avatars, is avalable quite yet (Eddie and the mods are probably buisy with the other aspect of what is going on right now). I just wanted to confirm that it is a thing that will happen and people should be aware of it.

That administrativia page wasn't made by a member of the Wiki staff and I've seen no comment by a member of the staff advocating the creation of such a page. (I could easily have missed it, though.)

In other words, it doesn't seem as if that page is officially recognised by us. Or at least I don't recognise it.

Dang it... and it makes sense, too. May I assume there will be a different anouncement at some point then? Or will you just edit that page? Ah, I'll put it on my watchlist just to be safe.

I'm fairly sure that now that it's there, we'll be using it. And it's not as if there's anything wrong with having it, it's just that I hadn't heard of it before and I think I should have.

As I said, just don't take it as official until someone says it is. Or until you see a mod's name in the article's history. That means that it will have been read by a mod (and thus I think it is fair to assume approved by a mod.)

The only bit that I'm unsure about in that page is the 40 avatar limit. It's pretty much a sealed deal by now if I'm any judge, but we have no official decision about it yet and until we do, there's a question mark over it.

Well, "somebody complained to Google" isn't confirmed, I think. My understanding is that it's possible that someone at Google (or possibly some bot in some Google system) could have detected that article and generated the decision to pull and send Eddie the message that he got. But it's of course also possible that someone sent Google a complaint which directed them to that page. As I said, this is not confirmed as far as I know.

I've been here long enough to remember when the banner wasn't around.

While I would point out that the purpose of the banner was to raise awareness of rules that were being persistently ignored, I can confirm that a whole bunch of people who were not (to the best of my knowledge) rule-breakers were very upset by/angry about it when it was introduced, so I don't think we should be casting aspersions on everybody who dislikes the banner.

I personally think the Second Google Incident page is a bit too short, compared to the 1st one, which explains what happened and helps reassure people.

Now using Trivialis handle.
