This reminds me of an urban legend we have around here.

So a black guy rides a tram. An old lady enters, and immediately starts to mutter things like, you know, "get back up your tree" and so on. The dude stoically ignores her. Then suddenly, a controller shows up, and everyone pulls out their tickets to show him (yeah, it works like this in here). And the black guy, picture it, rips the ticket out of the woman's hand, stuffs it into his mouth, and gulps it down.

"Your ticket, ma'am?"
"The nigga ate it!"

The legend usually ends in everyone clapping in applause for the guy once the other two leave. cool

"If you're Hindu and everyone stereotypes you as someone who doesn't ever go fly fishing, I apologize on the sake of my cruel people. But if it really bothers you, start fly fishing. Otherwise they're right. A less drastic solution would be to distract them with one of your positive stereotypes like how all Hindus have mind powers." - Seanbaby

I may be Australian, but I couldn't care less about cricket or rugby. In fact, I'm not really into sport at all.

Even though I'm Australian, I don't ride a kangaroo to work. I'm still learning.

Also, I'm not afraid of drop bears. I'd like to keep one as a pet.

OK.

I'm Finnish but I can't ski or ice-skate worth a damn.

I don't own a hunting weapon and I don't want to learn to hunt.

I'm not an alcoholic, nor am I violent.

I'm not particularly patriotic about my country's wars with the USSR, though I do acknowledge that the history there is pretty unique.

I prefer football over ice hockey. (You might think that all European nationalities stereotypically care more about football, but Finland is the exception: we're even more into ice hockey than Canadians.)

When it comes to English, I write somewhat eloquently (though I've much yet to learn) and I don't speak English with a thick accent.

Oh, and here's one thing that is not a stereotype but instead is something that's gotta be pretty unique for a Finnish guy whiter than Bill Gates: when I was in London last December, I went to a convenience store near the hotel and the employee there complimented my beard (presumably as small talk, which, by the way, is something that most Finns are genetically predisposed to loathe but which I rather enjoy.) He then went on to ask: "are you Muslim?"

The only thing about my looks that could make anyone assume I'm a Muslim is that I have a beard. In the University where I study, probably more than half the guys have a beard, especially people who study languages or theology (in which case it's Christian theology; I don't know if other kinds are possible to major in in any Finnish university.)

Of course, I told him that I'm an atheist, to which he said: "Ah, ok." (Nice to have that response every once in a while, BTW.)

So, the unique thing is that I'm pretty sure I'm the only white Finnish guy who's ever been mistaken for a Muslim. That's not against type or anything, but it's still an anecdote that I felt I might share here.

Edit: ...This was in OTC, not YF. I was browsing threads in both subfora, so I got mixed up. Damn.

I'm not really familiar with YF, but looking closely, this does look rather easy to mistake for an unusually refined YF thread.

More to the topic, I'm a college student, but I've never downed even a single cup of coffee. I'm that guy who asks for a hot chocolate at Starbucks while everyone else gets an ice latte or a mocha or whatnot. It's not just any hot-chocolate either. I make sure it receives an ample topping of extremely non-bitter whipped cream and cinnamon...

Defying preconceptions? Hmm... Well, once or twice strangers have been surprised that I'm a young woman and I'm not all "OMG buy buy buy clothes!!!!". I wouldn't have thought this would surprise people, but apparently it does.

Be not afraid...

Well, then consider that two stereotypes defied. But then I've been called "oreo" for nearly all my life so....

[up] I used to think that but I've met plenty of women that really do think shopping for anything, not just clothes, is a drag.

Um....no offense, but...is there another kind of Finnish guy?

For our indigenous population, we have the Sami people who were largely replaced by other peoples who arrived when the Ice Age was coming to an end.

The Sami people are somewhat similar (and related to) native Americans. Look it up.

Because the Sami people look kind of Asian compared to WASPs, the American immigration offices used to rate Finnish people as Mongols.

We're an open society but we have unfortunately low levels of immigration, but that doesn't mean that there aren't generations of people from non-white ethnicities here.

Wow, looks like tea really is Serious Business. [lol]

Hmmm... I'm a young woman and enjoy dressing up, even if I'd rather buy clothes from charity shops than wear the latest fashion. Yeah, I'm a girly girl. Sometimes I feel guilty about it because of the whole Stop Being Stereotypical thing, but I'm never going to become a tomboy because that's not me. Instead, I want to avert Real Women Never Wear Dresses by developing my skills and aiming to achieve my goals, all while keeping my girly interests.

If I'm in town and see a clothes shop and a bookshop, I'm going to take a look in both.

What's the point in giving up when you know you'll never stop anyway?
