I like how you demonstrated the "Promoted/Promotion" confusion by linking to the wrong one.:) (I fixed it.)
Somebody should really check for misuse, but I must say my gut reaction is that Promoted to Playable is a clearly superior name. When I saw this thread title, I assumed the trope was about normal playable characters becoming unlockable characters in a sequel.
You don't even need to do a wick check; just look through the example section. Everything on this page, including the description, treats the trope like it's Promoted to Playable.
I agree with abk 0100 that a wick check is not actually necessary. The second sentence of the trope's description itself mentions that the characters need not actually be unlockable and the examples on the page flow from that definition.
As for the second point about standardizing the "promotion/promoted" trope names, I am not sure that really is needed. As far as I can tell, so long as you make the other variants of those names redirects, searching should not be too big of an issue.

Wha? How did the name get changed to Promoted to Playable? Not that I take issue with the name, but what happened?
Promoted to Playable is more concise and just as clear.

Anyone have any objections, or should we start changing the wicks?
From someone not involved in the discussion, I see nothing wrong what what's been done.
The Internet misuses, abuses, and overuses everything. The name change itself seems like a no-brainer, but I'm not totally sure I'm cool with procedure being circumvented like this.
I think I'll holler for a mod's opinion on this.

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.Hmm, doesn't seem like I'm gonna get a response.
Well, I think we should do a crowner first. Skipping procedure sets a bad precedent and a crowner probably won't have any trouble getting votes anyway.

Second, queries like the one in usually go in Ask The Tropers.

Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.Well, it's been a month and no one's complained about the change, so I guess I'll just assume it's okay and start moving the wicks.
OK, I will concede that there may be nothing wrong with this name. But just hear me out.
1) I suggest, given the description, a tweak to Promoted to Playable, as I thought that this trope was limited to just unlockable characters (which said description clearly says is not the case). Obviously, given the nature of this "complaint," I can't accurately track "misuse."
2) Even if you don't believe #1 should hold, I had trouble searching for this title, which made me realize that there's a lot of similarly named tropes (Promoted Fanboy, Promotion to Parent, Promotion To Opening Credits, Promoted to Scapegoat) that are about 50/50 whether they use "Promotion" or "Promoted." I think we should standardize for ease of search (at least amongst the ones that are at least somewhat relatable).
Thoughts?
