I was trying out 2 on an emulator using the better translation the article's page mentioned.
... but I never finished it. I'LL GET BACK TO YOU ON THAT LATER
I've only played 1 and 2, but I think they are some of the best RPGs I've ever played. I really like the plot, the music and the general atmosphere (the last one especially in 2).
Join us in our quest to play all RPG video games! Moving on to disc 2 of Grandia!Prepare to hear me gushing about 2 a lot. I fucking love that game. Also, it was the first game I played ever, ever.
I kinda want to see a follow up to that game, the ending was somewhat ambiguous, and they never gave closure to Evans as a villain. He goes into slumber and promises to return... and that's it.
3 could use a remake.

I casually found the third and forth games in my old brother games collection. Breath of fire three is by far one of the best games I have the pleasure to play.
Very big fan of the series and have been since I was a little thing. I want to play through them all again sometime. The only one I've beaten recently is 2 which has remained my favorite to play for some reason. I like 3's cast and characters much more as well as it's...everything. 2 is my favorite though and I play it the most.
I also really love Dragon Quarter. Though I look at it sometimes and wonder if Capcom wanted the series dead. And seethe with anger because there are no BF characters in Marvel vs. Capcom.
1 is definitely the weakest. It was rather mediocre and had little in the way to make it truly stand out. 2 is when the series really started to carve out its identity which would be carried on in 3 and 4. The religious conflicts were mainstays until 5 came out and was...well. Different.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahGood lord I fucking loved 2 and 3.
Breath of fire 4 is also good especially the music
This theme is so Boss like!
I only played BF 1, which I kind of liked actually. It's a bit generic but it's still enjoyable. Gobi is GARBAGE though, oh my god I hate him. It's also really easy to get lost at times, I think I got to a little past where you get the Naga lady before my GBA emu stopped working. I loved the first battle theme.
I've only played 2. I liked it. I played it on the SNES back int rhe day, and then when I got a Wii, I downloaded it on there to replay.
X-Men X-Pert, my blog where I talk about X-Men comics.I really liked 3 and 4. I played 2, but it seemed a bit clunky for my spoiled tastes. Certainly not a bad game though. Dragon Quarter is a different kettle of fish entirely, but I like the thought behind it.
I think the series is officially dead though. I remember some interview where they stated that they didn't think the extra development costs of an RPG were worth the sales.
I liked 4's atmosphere and general look, specially in the menus.
2, for my tastes, was a tad non-descriptive. If it had a different graphics style, more like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy, it would've been more immersive. That being said, I found the environments and characters truly unique. Though it always bugged me how small and unpopulated the world is. Towns or even big cities like Windia or Evrai have at the very least 2 or 3 houses max. It ruins the effect. Heck, Windia's Castle was bigger than the whole town.
The Tunlan segment was fantastic though. I really liked that place.
I really liked Ryu growth in BOF 3, from using his sword like a total idiot to become a full fledged badass dragon at the end.
I probably would like the series better if I didn't have *awful* luck playing it. I had *three* copies of Breath of Fire 3 glitch out on me, and one copy of 4 as well.
Home of CBR Rumbles-in-Exile: rumbles.fr.yuku.comIt was probably your Playstation in that case.
3's Ryu I like the most for that. He hides his face and waves around pathetically while crying in the beginning. Then he fights head-on making clearly directed strikes.
And then he becomes an adult. And unlocks the full potential of Kaiser.
AND BECOMES SUPER SAIYAN RYU.
The difference in his battle animation as a child is my favorite bit of him though. It's not something they needed to add by any means and not everyone notices it. It's a neat little touch though to show his growth over time.
EDIT: Gameplay wise he's my favorite as well. His dragon transformations are wide and varied both in appearance and usage. And he can heal. Not only that he can heal pretty damned well. I really like the idea of a main character whose main spells are healing ones.

If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahI've played 2 and Dragon Quarter so far. 2 was the first turn based game I ever played. Still loves it, even if I keep losing my copy. Dragon Quarter I only recently picked up, and it's very hard for me to get into the game because of how dull it seems to be. I just keep getting to the part where I get Lin and then going "Ah, screw it, I'm bored."
It's probably the music. CAPCOM's normally really good about music, but Dragon Quarter just isn't up to par in that regard. I want to love this game, but it's making me apathetic. Also, the character models are weird. Given that everyone lives underground, can't say that'd be unusual, but still.
i got as far as the fat lady in bof2, but i just couldnt get the last encounter to trigger to i had to quit.
it was...disheartening.
bof1 had a charm to it but it wasnt really all that great- some nice music and characters though.
bof3 was, for me, quite simply the best in the series while 4 was the weakest.
dragon quarter was a breath of fresh air and its a real shame people dont seem to give it a real chance.
...and thats all ive got to say.
I have played 3 and 4. Started to play 5 but disliked it so much I stopped midway. (It was just too dark, and the CGI was bad.)
3 is in my opinion a candidate for best Eastern Rpg ever. It has everything: Anime-style graphics (for a console of its time), awesome music, great gameplay options (especially the Dragon Gene system) and a story that both subverted and played straight the classic Chosen One trope at the same time!
4 was similar but they did a couple of cruel things to some characters and the real villain got away, apparently which I still can't believe they allowed.
And yeah, now that its been mentioned, why no BOF characters in any of the Capcom fighting games? They have used more obscure ones!

Apparently, since Square localized the first game, they hold the rights to it, and being that the first game was called simply "Breath Of Fire", somehow that extends to having issues using the franchise in general. Or something like that, that's what I've heard so far.
Probably because after DQ flopped Capcom was a bit too chickenshit to try the RPG genre again. Which is bullshit.
True, BOF 4 was very cruel especially to Fou Lu.
But the most shocking part in any BOF was the result of the first battle against Balio and Sunder in BOF 3.
Sadly, it was across two P S1s and a PS 2.
Home of CBR Rumbles-in-Exile: rumbles.fr.yuku.comYears since i've played it, this song is still mind blowingly awesome.

There's no thread for this series', which is frankly heartrending. It Needs More Love in desperate quantities. So! Am I the only fan of this series' in this forum? Here's a thread.
...Am I?
