Army: Your new handgun will be a Sig Sauer
Half a decade into its search for a new handgun, the Army has chosen Sig Sauer's version of the Modular Handgun System, according to a Thursday announcement from the Army.
The new sidearm will replace the M9 Beretta, the Army's pistol of choice for more than 30 years.
"I am tremendously proud of the Modular Handgun System team," said Army acquisition executive Steffanie Easter in the release. "By maximizing full and open competition across our industry partners, we have optimized private sector advancements in handguns, ammunition and magazines and the end result will ensure a decidedly superior weapon system for our warfighters."
The Army first announced the competition for the MHS back in 2011, but multiple delays left the most recent solicitation deadline at February of 2016.
And Colt, S&W are always the bridesmaids and never the bride...

All night at the computer, cuz people ain't that great. I keep to myself so I won't be on The First 48Slowly but surely the Europeans are taking over, one plastic boomstick at a time.
Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies. They've already taken over our luxury car business. What next?
Disgusted, but not surprisedTanks.
Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies. In a year or two, the USA will probably be getting those from Russia.
Disgusted, but not surprisedRussia are technically also Asian, not just European, so I don't know if they count.

Not really, Russia is very much a European nation in terms of culture and population spread.
Oh really when?Replacing an Italian gun with a Swiss gun is Europeans taking over?
I have this mystical skill in the infantry called "typing" First Civ Div, but fuck you once a grunt always disgruntled.Belgium: M249/240.
Italian: Bellini M4, M9.
Germany: Rheinmetall L44 120mm, M320
Israel: Soltam K6
South Africa: Milkor MGL
Sweden: Carl Gustav Recoiless Rifle
The US Military is full or foreign guns and a good amount of them are European. Picking the Sig P320 seems to be a good pick in my opinion.
Inter arma enim silent legesFully aware of those. Although most of them get made in the US. Except the M 68 CCO's, those are all pure Sweden.
It was more the statement that the selection of the P320 was Europeans taking over when it was just trading one European for another.
The way I see it, European gun companies have to get by on their merits, while American companies tend to be more "Well my pappy owned one so I'm gonna get a Ruger too!" Not that they make bad stuff, they just tend to get complacent really, really quickly.
I have this mystical skill in the infantry called "typing" First Civ Div, but fuck you once a grunt always disgruntled. On the other hand, we've got most of Europe buying M16 derivatives, and some of the biggest ones that weren't using them are switching to them.
With the exception that most of us use M16 derivatives that are good.
From memory, Denmark uses the Colt Canada C7 and C8, France is switching to the Heckler & Koch H416 (which yeah, it's basically an M4 Only Better). The Norwegian Army uses the 416 as well. The Bundeswehr is probably going with a Heckler & Koch design once they get around to replacing the G36. The Greeks use US M16's, though. The Spanish adopted the G36 and don't look to be switching any time soon. Italy produces most of its own stuff...

Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies. The Swiss are clearly more European than the Italians, since the Swiss are from Switzerland and the Italians are from Chicago.
Sig has factories in the US, so the P320 will certainly be produced in the US and once it gets into service it will be the M whatever handgun.
Inter arma enim silent legesUSA: Mossberg 500/590A1 — but then again, the US is practically the only nation in the world that issues shotguns to its troops as a standard piece of kit.
This Space Intentionally Left Blank. There is also the Benelli M4/M1014, which is Italian.
Yeah, but for a standard piece of kit, it wasn't exactly widely issued.
Didn't stop me taking a hacksaw to one though...
I have this mystical skill in the infantry called "typing" First Civ Div, but fuck you once a grunt always disgruntled. So i got a job with Leapers, hooray for becoming an actual industry insider!
I have this mystical skill in the infantry called "typing" First Civ Div, but fuck you once a grunt always disgruntled.Grats. Let us know how it goes.
Who watches the watchmen?During my KATUSA training, I had an opportunity to use M4 carbine.
......*sniffs* I'm not kidding, touching the M4 for the first time? It was one of the most exhilarating moments in my whole fucking my life. I mean...holy shit. Just...holy shit. It felt amazing, it sounded amazing, and it smelled amazing.
Not that I was particularly good at it. I zeroed perfectly, but the qualifying...man, almost everyone managed to pass it in just one try, but it took me three. I could almost have been a holdover and repeat 3 more weeks, but a SSG (God bless that guy) spotted that my rifle's rear sight aperture was completely loose. Once he tightened that up, I shot 33 out of 40.
Welp. That should teach me to double check my rifle's condition. XP
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel. Now imagine holding a rifle that's not outdated garbage.
For reals though, I'm glad you're having fun.
Oh really when?Oh yes, it was fun. SO much fun.
That's why I wanted to go to infantry. They have wonderful things like M249 and M2 and such. Holy shit!
...But man, the competition was tough. My PT score was 235, but the cutline was around 250. Also, I majored in English so I found myself stuck as an administrative specialist (is that the right term?) working in civil military operations.
So...yeah, that's probably about as POG as it gets. XP
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.Yep, just like the soldier in Vietnam who could type over a hundred words a minute, and was therefore much too valuable to risk in a line outfit...

It's a shitty gimmick. I was excited to see one right up until I handled it.
