Hell, I won't even use "3-in-1" general-purpose machine oil on my firearms.

I'm happier than a pig in shit at the moment as I've finally tracked down a supplier of my favourite bore solvent ("Young's 303" - although they've changed the recipe and it doesn't smell like I remember sad) and I use proper oils and lubricants formulated specifically for firearms.

The only "non-firearm" product I've used on any of the metal work is "methylated spirits" (ethanol denatured with methanol) to wipe finger grease off (mostly) bare metal to prep it for rebluing since it removes grease and any excess just evaporates away.

high alcohol concentration cleaners are fine for that very reason. They leave little or no water behind and cause minimal issues with the fire arm.

After a bath in the solvent tank, inspection, and repairs it is time to break out the 'Donkey Dick' aka RAPID LUBE 202. You have actually lube the weapon 2-3 times as the solvent sometimes sticks in a few places.

If you are doing it with an M-16/AR-15 you have to remove the stock, hand guards, and buffer assembly as they all have petrol based products. You will spend about half an hour to a full hour lubing, cleaning, and wiping down the fire arm repeatedly until it holds that light coat of lubricant shine.

And now you see why I favour bolt actions over complex semi-autos such as the AR family. [lol]

You will spend nearly the same amount of time with your bolt action. You have to detach the wood stock and all accessories.

That's why hunters, snipers and professional shooters have drag bags, cases or some means of protecting a rifle from the elements. Mud, sand and other grit make things go from bad to worse.

Well that is to ensure it is as clean and reliable as possible in general.

[up][up][up]Yeah, nearly. Still, a lot less hassle than some of the firearms I've owned or used over the years.

Would definitely love an AK-47, though.

From some old stuff I've seen online (including an instructional comic issued to soldiers in Vietnam), the M-16 used to have a plastic drag bag that was intended to protect it from the elements, which could also be quickly torn open if shooting started. It did warn that if you left the rifle in there too long, it'd suffer from mold and other issues anyways due to the moisture that would get trapped inside (probably one reason you don't see them anymore).

I reported on this guy toting an AR-15 rifle when the Russians came to Crimea in the Yack Fest Section. The same guy showed up again in another part of the mainland in Eastern Ukraine.

Found a couple of articles on Arisaka bolt-action rifles converted by the CCP to fire Soviet 7.62x39 bullets. Some were handed to the Viet Minh/Cong and to Indonesian nationalist forces. I won't be surprised if the Khmer Rouge and the Pathet Lao got their hands on these.

Interesting. I know the Arisaka had a full sized 6.5mm Rifle Cartridge and converted over to a 7.7mm later.

That 6.5mm was in that ancient Russian assault rifle in the 1910s wasn't it?

It isn't an assault rifle actually. It is an Automatic Rifle like the BAR. Select fire firing a full sized rifle cartridges issued and used in the support weapon role. However the man who designed it did have a design that if built would have been the first Assault Rifle but the procurement types didn't want to switch to a new ammo and suggested they use stocks they had.

The Russians bought a bunch of rifles and a lot of of ammo off of the Japanese before WWI.

The Chinese did a good job converting the Arisaka rifles they had. I did like the one they did with the SKS-style bayonet on. That oughta teach someone who wants to fight in close quarters with that thing.

They also did conversion on their Brens and ZB-26 LMGs to fire Soviet 7.62x39 ammo. I know the Soviets did the same with Stens to fire 7.62 Tokarev ammo. Though the first conversion done is with North Vietnam with the MAT-49s to the same ammo by changing the barrel and making a longer magazine. Good thing it can still fold forward.

Vaguely on the topic of Chinese-made 7.62x39 firearms, the closest I can get to the AK-47 I want is a Norinco NHM 90 with 5-round mags and either Dragunov-style or wooden "hole-through" stock - which would set me back anything from 1300 to 1900 New Zealand dollars brand new (a far cry from back when you could pick up a Norinco copy of the proper AK-47 for around NZ$400)

[up]That's a cool gun and nicely made. I wish I had the construction skills to build something of that quality.

Here we can manufacture any firearm for which we hold the relevant licence(s) so in theory I could make a rifle-length version of that but in practice, I'd be stretched to make a "poacher's shotgun" using a couple of pieces of metal tube.

Anyone shoot anything chambered in 9.18 makarov? How did they feel?

Got my mom into this and she wants a handgun now. Budget of 300-500ish. She is a somewhat small-framed Asian lady with decent arm strength from tennis. Will take her to a rental range at some point and run her through Glock/SW/Sig/Beretta, but being that I don't foresee her enjoying the maintenance aspect of it at all, am thinking a revolver (for simplicity) or a Soviet design (beautiful simplicity - Soviet Russia got it in a way that Steve Jobs never did) might not be a bad idea.

Dunno about getting something in 9x18. I have a hard time finding those but that's just me. Only fired a Makarov once and only one magazine. Felt a bit eh. Bit underwhelming.

It's like a 9x19, only with another millimetre shaved off the cartridge. So it's a bit of a popgun, I guess. tongue

It has suddenly become my desire to have a Disney Princess themed gun collection. To that end - what gun should correspond to which?

  • Snow White - St G-44? As the first Disney princess I feel like she should be some kind of "revolutionary" historic gun design.
  • Cinderella - super-accessorized AR-15?
  • Aurora - ...no idea on this one.
  • Ariel - Glock of some kind (for the whole "fire them underwater" bit?)
  • Belle - FAMAS
  • Jasmine - one of them "Khyber Pass Specials"?
  • Pocahontas - some kind of American revolver or lever-action?
  • Mulan - Norinco SKS
  • Tiana - Raven MP-25?
  • Rapunzel - AK-47 (longevity/eternal youth reference)?
  • Merida - Barrett M82?
  • Elsa - Mosin-Nagant?
  • Anna - Nagant revolver?

Nah, give Ariel that funky Russian underwater flechette gun they gave to their Spetsnaz back in the 70s or something.
