That's a pretty neat selection of rounds there. Once I'm done with studies I think I'll spend more time shooting again, it's been too little of that recently other than a little bit of plinking at home... Maybe find a good handgun range, I know there's at least a couple around town.

I had a sighting-in session followed by a bit of a plinking session with my .22 rifle a few weeks back, which was really enjoyable.

Still haven't had the opportunity to fire my "new" CZ ZKK yet, let alone do some more pistol shooting.

The ammo collection's got some interesting rounds in it, all right, some because of historical significance (8mm Lebel being the first purpose-made Nitro round to be adopted by a service, .22 Short being the first US-made metal cartridge and oldest cartridge still being commercially loaded etc) some of significance to me because I've owned a firearm that fired them or used a firearm that fired them (in the case of the 6.5x55 Swedish, I owned the firearm but never fired it), some both (7.62x54R has the longest service life of a military-issued cartridge and I owned/fired a M-N 1890/30), some are just fucking cool (e.g. .50AE).

I've got three shelves: pistol cartridges from .22 Short up to .50AE, "Sporting Long Arm" from .22 Long Rifle to .300 Win. Mag and 3 shotgun shells, and "Military Long Arm" from 5.56x45 up to .50BMG.

Being an OCD sorta guy, the sporting shelf includes .223 and .308 and the military shelf includes 5.56x45 and 7.62x51. Hey, the headstamps are different, OK?

Only three gaps left - and .45 Colt, 7.92x57 and 7.63x25 are all on their way to fill them.

And then there's those five unexpected rounds that I don't know what to do with (short of buying another 10 rounds to fill out another shelf).

Meanwhile, only three replica semi-auto pistols left on my "must get" list (and a further 12 on my "would like" list) and a lengthy list of revolvers and long arms that I would like to get replicas of.

I dream of having a man-cave with my replica firearm and ammo collections displayed on the walls beside the safes containing my real firearms...

Edit: make that one gap in the ammo collection - the .45 Colt and 7.92x57 just arrived.

Froglube: a plant based lubricant for guns that's:

  • waterproof

  • protective

  • breaks up carbon

  • edible , yes it's non-toxic

Has nothing to do with Kermit the Frog and Rule 34...

It was a ways back. Let me see if I can find the link more directly.

bah no joy. Some artist photo'd something like 900 sectioned bullets from a unique collection. There was a link that showed the bulk of the bullets photos but I can't find it anymore.

Have a google image search result as a consolation prize.

Some awesome photos there, thanks.

What you're talking about sounds like Sabine Pearlman's work - but I can't find a complete collection of her photos.

It's cool seeing what's inside them. I wonder how to go about making cross-sectioned bullets for display.

Spent part of today reshuffling my ammo collection display. I originally had two .270s (a ballistic tip in brass and a ballistic silver tip in nickel) and three 12ga cartridges (full brass, paper and plastic) so I took one of the .270s and the plastic and paper 12ga cartridges out to make room for three of the unexpected "freebees" that arrived yesterday (6mm Remington, 6.5-284 Norma and 7mm Remington Magnum).

It's not like I need two cosmetically-different .270s and three different variants of shotshell on display.

Mother Runs off three teenage thugs with "assault rifle" In Detroit no less. The chief of police said she did the right thing.

Good thing she isn't in one of the crazy stand your ground states or she would have been sent to jail for "warning shots"

Original Article I found called it an AR. The linked article just calls it a rifle.

The Gun is Civilization

I like what he says in this,

"People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don't constitute lethal force watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst and get up and walk away. Most beatings result in at least a minimal stay in a hospital. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level."

I read somewhere that in Texas kicking the crap out of someone while wearing hard-soled leather boots counts as "assault with a deadly weapon" - I fully agreed with that and wished they had a similar law here.

Here, the policians who make the laws and the limp-dicked judges all seem to have watched too many movies when it comes to the damage that a beating can inflict as well.

Strange, since "king-pinning" or "king-hitting" (beating someone enough to kill them) is a favoured tactic of some of the gangs here. It's preferred over knifing or shooting as it's more personal and enables you to prolong your victim's death.

But it's not king-pinning that the politicians focus their efforts on - far more "important" to put restrictions on scary-looking firearms that the gangs don't even use (the one use of an MSSA in a murder spree was a lone nutter and gangs prefer concealable weapons or beatings).

But to deal with that you have to do things like ban Baseball bats.

Blunt Force Trauma is just as likely to kill you as a gunshot wound.

That's debatable really. How would you go about comparing them for lethality? If a pair of identical twins came to ER one with a gun shot wound and one with a want blunt force trauma injury who has a better chance of survival?

Yes anything can and will kill you. But while lethal a rises fist is not the same as a loaded weapon.

[up][up]You don't need to ban anything, just set suitably high penalties for misusing things to harm people - and make sure the minimum punishment is suitably high, because judges tend to give minimum punishments for crimes against people. (They reserve maximum punishments for people who steal money/commit fraud/embezzle).

Joey:

If a pair of identical twins came to ER one with a gun shot wound and one with a want blunt force trauma injury who has a better chance of survival?

Insufficient information for any meaningful answer. If gunshot wound was a .22 in the hand and the blunt-force trauma was a severe beating delivered with a tire iron, the blunt-force injuries are far more likely to be fatal. If the gunshot wound was a .45 between the eyes and the blunt-force trauma was a fist to the nose, the gunshot wins the "more likely to be fatal" lottery hands down. The point is, it's not what caused the injury that determines how dangerous it is, it's how severe the injury is. Blunt-force trauma isn't always minor, like it almost always is in the movies.

In other news, my little CZ vz45 pocket pistol is broked. sad The last time I took it to the range it wouldn't feed at all, so I'm thinking either the one magazine I have for it is bent or the feed mechanism/extractor is defunct. I haven't been able to find a manual for taking it apart beyond the very basic (remove slide and barrel) breakdown for cleaning, so I'm afraid to take off the side plate and see what I can see. But with it broken down as far as I'm willing to go, I can see a small wire hook that appears to be the feed mechanism that doesn't seem to be doing anything when I work the action. And I think it's supposed to.

Finances are a bit too tight to take it to a gunsmith right now. Pooh. I is not happy. If anyone happens to know where I can get (or even read) a manual for it (CZ vz45, made in 1948, .25 cal) please let me knowwaii

So I took a Dremel to the grip of my Glock 19 I picked up recently. Already feels a lot better, and cleared a lot of the material from around the magazine release so I think I can skip getting an extended one.

All right, my dear gun-mad tropers, here's an oddball question for you:

Does anyone have, or know anyone who has, a couple of surplus spent brass cases (ones that have been deemed no longer fit for reloading but don't have visible cracks/deformations would do) each of .44 AMP and .454 Casull?

I'm wanting them for my collection (I can get the projectiles to fit them easily enough so I could put a projectile into each and have a suitable inert one to display).

I want two of each as I intend to give one of each away as a present.

I'm prepared to cover costs.

They will be no problem to send to NZ through customs as they are not live rounds, nor even complete inert round.

If anyone can help out, please let me know.

Cheers

Boy those are not easy to get. Both are fairly uncommon. You need to find an owner/shooter of said fire arm. I would try trawling a forum where someone who may own said weapons visits.
