If that's how the novel characters look like, I'd prefer the character designs for the anime. Chiaki's light-years better in the anime. And yes, using "light-years" was intentional. I anticipated that query faster than FTL transmissions.

I'm reading this because it's interesting. I think. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over.I prefer the anime designs because otherwise we wouldn't have that demon-knight-looking dude.

Modified Weaponized Exhaust: any energy output device powerful enough to be interesting is powerful enough to be used as a weapon.
Fight smart, not fair.Who I'm suspecting will turn out to be a Gentle Giant. Being part of the Bentenmaru crew and all.

What's precedent ever done for us?Okay that episode was pretty sweet.
Although it sounds like Lighting II was a Warm-Up Boss
The hell was up with the poetry though?
....Wait a moment.
The crew of the Lightning II must have been cooked alive...

Marika explicitly made sure that she switched the beam off before the crew could be seriously hurt. She just wanted to fry their systems and deliver a warning, not kill them.
What's precedent ever done for us?I though it was powerfull only to blind optical pointing...
Whatever I will just rewatch it.
So in other words the military and 2 pirate ships were saving the Lighting II and not them?
Because if things kept up that ship would have been cooked.
Nope. Again, Marika only kept it up long enough to intimidate and disarm them. She explicitly states that. The other ships only turned up to say hi and pass the popcorn.
What's precedent ever done for us?And arrest the other ship. The other ship's engines were disabled and computers were down, remember? No way the other ship could have gotten away.
Yu hav nat sein bod speeling unntil know. (cacke four undersandig tis)the cake is a lie!Well doesn't change the fact if she wanted to cook them she could have.
It was a solar equivalent of holding a gun to someone's head.
Hey, they shot first.
On a civilian ship full of schoolkids, no less.

What's precedent ever done for us?Legitimate selfdefense, though not so much that they picked cyber fight with them instead of nicely surrender as good kids should....
The Lightning 11's crew very carefully set up the operation so that the Odette could vanish without trace. I think it's best not to think about what they were planning to do with Marika and her schoolfriends.
What's precedent ever done for us?What pirates (unlegitimate?) would do is one things, but I don't think it is generaly recommended to play heroes...
Except when you've got a pirate ship of your own to bail you out if you start getting into serious trouble.
Marika needed to show some leadership chops if she was going to stop being treated like a helpless target by everyone within a dozen light-years, and the Lightning's attack presented the perfect, minimal-risk opportunity.
What's precedent ever done for us?Don't get me wrong, I agree it was best she could do in that situation, but if you look on it out of context. As some military or space police would: Marika involved her classmates into personal afair and just played on Space Cowboy s...
I had figured the Lighting II was a secret test set up by Marika's mom or something.
Except they probably wouldn't, because they were monitoring her too...
What's precedent ever done for us?Anything Marika did to them would have been classified as self defense regardless.
Fight smart, not fair.@Tenzen12: I wouldn't exactly call what happened a "personal affair". Even removing Marika, capturing Odette II would still be an option owing to its history.
I'm reading this because it's interesting. I think. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over.Thing is, say Marika hadn't done anything. How would things have ended up for the Yacht Club and the Odette II? Not pretty.
You've got about 10-odd young, pretty girls. They'd sell very well in the human trafficking markets - and you could probably get both a decent ransom on Jenny Doolittle, heir to the massive and rich Doolittle shipping concern, and THEN sell her off, netting you more cash.
Let's also not forget that the Odette II is almost identical to her last configuration when she was known as the Hakuchou, save for a lack of beam cannons and shields. Even if Lightning II's crew weren't able to sell her off, taking her over and getting her outfitted back to privateer standard would give you a very powerful asset.
Also, somehow, I can't help but thing that SOMETHING is going on with the Odette II. It's surely a Chekhov's Gun of some sort. Probably she'll end up returning to space under the command of the Yacht Club.
And, again, people are advised to surrender to their kidnappers because there's a high chance of rescue. The Lightning, meanwhile, arranged for the Odette to disappear without trace. Remember - if Marika hadn't been there, neither would her minders.
Of course, this is all assuming that the Lightning wasn't just running a test on Marika on behalf of one of the observer-factions, though one would hope that they'd picked people with less itchy trigger fingers for that job.

What's precedent ever done for us?That is what I was talking about, but I also agree in that very situation it was better fight. maybe not generaly and they should get some lecture how they were "reckess" .

Hm, looking at that I say characters 7 and 9 didn't really need new appearances for the adaptation, but maybe that's just me.
