We're going to appoint people in each of the subforums to welcome newbies in by an automated PM and show them how things work in the particular subforum.
The appointment thing is so that at least one person knows it is their job, and so the newbie doesn't get buried under a PM onslaught the first time they post.
We will give the appointee (now called Heralds) a spiffy icon badge so people will know they are on the job for everybody. There will also be access to a report that shows who is new in the subforum.
If you want to apply for the position, all you have to do is post a welcome draft here. That way, a moderator will consider you. If someone else has already applied for the position, don't worry! Multiple people can apply for one subforum.
This is a list of the heralds that have already been appointed and the subforums that still need heralds.
Open sections with inactive heralds:
- Betsyandthe Five Avengers — World Building
- Ori Doodle — Old Folks Home
- Cyto Zytokine — New Media
- Totemic Hero — Webcomics
- JHM — Music
- Parable — On-Topic Conversations
- GastonRabbit — Content Violation Discussions

Possibly a silly question, but should the Herald badge appear on forum posts automatically?
Or does it need to be toggled on/off? Just realised that I don't seem to have one, and I have no idea how/when/if it should get added.
Thanks!
Non-mods have no access to the badges, thus all of us new heralds are still waiting for our badges.

Thanks for confirming!
Recently, a discussion the moderation thread called my conduct in the past couple months into question and how it poorly reflects on the site as one of the forums Herald. I ultimately agree with the assessment that I acted beyond inappropriately in multiple instances, and am thus resigning as Video Game Herald.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with? That's understandable although we don't have anyone to replace you with right now.
I did add video games to the list of open sections with inactive heralds though.
Macron's notesKar, I apologize if I was excessively harsh. Admittedly, I didn't (and still don't) have the full picture regarding the exact extent of what I accused you of.
I respect your choice to tender your resignation and accept responsibility.
Been toying with the thought of taking over as Forum Games herald. It looks like classifiedzerogoki's herald message hasn't been updated since 2012, so here's our draft.
... it feels like we're missing something, like there was a specific thing we decided to put in and then forgot about <.<;
ATUHOR'S NOSE: This message was sent automatically, but the account behind it is a real person. Feel free to reply to this PM if you have any questions, or just want to say hi.
Hey there, [[troper]], and welcome to Forum Games! Here, as you might've gathered, we play games... on the forum! It's all fairly intuitive, but here's some things you might like to know:
- The forum-wide rules all still apply here, of course. There's also a set of Forum Games-specific rules you'll want to read over.
- There is a recommendations and ideas thread, where people recommend existing games and suggest new ones. Whether you want to hear what games people like or have a cool idea and want to make sure it doesn't already exist, this is the thread for you.
- The Text-Formatting Rules are your friend!
- Play the game you're playing. If the thread is "give the above avatar a funny gift", don't do silly things like come in with a post about how your avatar throws the above poster into the sun. If you don't like the game in a given thread, there are lots of other threads to play other games in.
- "Out of character" chat — yes, this is still Forum Games, not Role Playing, but it comes up sometimes — should be hidden behind [[spoiler:spoiler tags]].
- Multiposting and bumping:
- Double-posting to bump a thread that hasn't had a response in a few days is fine. Double-posting to bump a thread that hasn't had a response in a few hours is unnecessary. Double-posting just to respond to your own post instead of letting someone else do it is flat-out rude.
- Similarly, "sandwich posting" (responding right back to someone who just responded to you, like you're the bread in a their-post sandwich) is generally frowned upon, especially in "interact with the above post" games, but just like bumps, it's fine if the thread has gotten pretty slow.
- Thread Necromancy is not forbidden on TV Tropes. If there's a thread you want to participate in that hasn't gotten posts in a long while, just jump in with your contribution. Bringing it back to the top of the list might attract a whole new crowd!
- If other people are breaking the rules, holler the mods from the meatballs menu in the top-right corner of the post.
- Above all, be nice and have fun! This is games, after all; having fun is what they're for!
I like it! I'll slot you in
Macron's notesI know you can't edit posts right now, but I think there's a typo in there. I believe it should read "AUTHOR'S NOTE", not "ATUHOR'S NOSE"
Bigotry will NEVER be welcome on TV Tropes.I am pretty sure that was a joke unless I misinterpreted it somehow.

Macron's notesYes, it's an intentional joke.
Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.Okay, good to know. Reference went right over my head.
Bigotry will NEVER be welcome on TV Tropes. We did consider putting an explanatory pothole in the herald message, but decided it might be too distracting from the message's actual purpose...
Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.Proposal for an updated comics welcome message - I've expanded the spoiler section a bit based on the conversation here.
Does it still look ok to use?
Hi, [[troper]], and welcome to the Comics subforum.
This forum's mostly for conversations about comic books themselves, not their tropes and pages on TV Tropes.
As some publishers start to experiment with a mix of print and digital comics the border with webcomics can blur a little at times, but the focus here is on the print side of things.
(That said, when webcomics and print comics are set in the same shared universe, we're not going to worry much about the distinction if you talk about both of them on one thread)
It's fine to launch new threads for specific topics, but we do have a few very active, long-running ones as well:
Threads for Marvel Comics:
Threads for DC:
Others:
All of these are good places to discuss new comics, discuss old comics and ask questions.
(Although if you're only here to ask about plot or character details for trope examples, you might be better with the Fact Checking Thread over in the Wiki and Forums section)
There's also the Comic Book Recommendations thread, which is exactly what it sounds like. It you want to find new comics to read, or spread the word about something good you're currently reading, this is the place to do it.
The general rules apply to all of the threads here, as they do elsewhere.
Spoiler policy
Not everyone reads new comics as soon as they come out. Some people don't get to a comic shop on publication day, some wait for the collected editions and others only discover a cool series years later. So please tag your spoilers in the same way you would if writing for a works page. The following rules apply when posting spoilers:- If you're starting a new thread, don't put spoilers in the title.
- Any spoilers for comics not covered by the thread's title must be tagged (e.g. don't post unmarked Batman spoilers in a Superman thread).
- If a thread's about specific comics (e.g. X-Men) then older spoilers for those comics may not need to be tagged.
- As a bare minimum, spoilers for the most recent issue of each series must be tagged. For crossovers and events, this applies to the most recent issue of the relevant series, not just the latest chapter of the event.
- For one-shots and final issues, allow at least one month before posting unmarked spoilers.
- There's no hard rule beyond these minimums, but we'd encourage you to keep tagging for a little longer, so that tropers waiting for the collected editions aren't spoiled.
- If you want to post spoilers based on a pre-release preview, they must be tagged. There's no outright ban on discussing leaked content, but spoilers from leaks must be tagged in the same way.
- Posts with tagged spoilers should state which series and issue(s) the hidden spoilers are for. Please use issue numbers rather than saying 'new' or 'latest'.
All of this is based on the wider forum spoiler policy, and posts with unmarked spoilers that break rules may get thumped by moderators.
Lastly, please remember that not everyone likes the same things - and that there are real people creating the comics you're reading. It's fine to say that a particular comic isn't working for you, but this isn't a place for excessive negativity - or for vitriol aimed at a comic's creative team.
If you have any other questions, please drop me a message.

Swapped it in. Here's what it looks like in the list of Herald messages. Does everything look OK?
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I don't know if we need a section on spoiler policy. We can just like people to the forum rules thread or this one
Macron's notesIt wasn't posted there at the time (I was waiting for feedback on the proposed herald text), but if we think it's overkill to mention it in both places, I can certainly cut down the herald message again to use a very short summary and a link?
I would have posted earlier about the herald message but I ended up forgetting about it.
Anyways, shortening the summary sounds good.
Macron's notesOk - give me a little while and I'll put that together. I imagine the herald message will be ok in the interim?
Yeah, it's fine.
Macron's notesEdit: Misread. Never mind.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I'll be honest, I love being a herald because whenever some one replies to me, I always ask them for a recommendation and it has helped me expand my reading list a lot.
It's not like heralds have other duties (moderation or otherwise) so It's a simple task.
But I don't actually participate in the forums themselves because I am at that age where typing about things is such a chore now.
I read books for the sheer entertainment value, and while yes, I do still get hyped about certain scenes in books, I no longer have those kittens running around in my brain that make me explode and froth at a forum "DID YOU READ CHAPTER X? OMG! THE LORE IMPLICATIONS!"
I do however enjoy reading OTHER posters have such explosions. Ah to be young and excited ;p
So if active participation is key, I can understand why you might want to replace me. But if Things are fine, I don't mind staying on.
Herald of the Literature Sub-Forum. Share me your favourite book/series/author!I just wanted to gauge herald activity. If you still want to be a herald that's fine.
Macron's notesTwo things we'd like some feedback on regarding our herald message:
- Should we add a pothole to clarify the "atuhor's nose" joke? We left it out originally because we thought it would be distracting.
- We're not sure the sandwich posting bit is clear enough; people occasionally seem to be under the impression that posting immediately after a reply is a strict violation, whereas our understanding is that the norm against sandwich posting is a simple extension of the observation that monopolizing a thread constitutes being a dick, especially in "interact with the above post" games where constant sandwich-posting results in a literal monopoly on the thread. Do y'all think this needs to be clearer?
