US Government trying stem tide of immigration - literally

The US government is putting a fence in the ocean to separate Tijuna, from California.

The fence extends about 90 metres into the surf, and is 5.4 metres high, costing $4.3mn.

The article suggests there's already a 22-kilometre long fence in place already, or something along those lines.

A 22 kilometer fence that has been grafitied, no less. Yeah, this isn't really going to do much besides make pointless busy work for folks. This will not actually decrease the level of illegal immigration.

Improving conditions and job opportunities in Mexico will stem illegal immigration. But I'm not sure we can do anything about that.

Legalizing more immigration will decrease the level of illegal immigration.

But I'm not sure people care about that.

I'm no geographer (or whatever the field is), but... building this thing seems ecologically ... bad.

Tidal barriers for civilian purposes are terrible for ecology on beaches and in the waters...

This is a metal fence, however, not a thick concrete slab. This is going to mess that ecology up like hell.

Well, at least it's pointless busy work. It's not going to stem the tide of illegal immigration at all, but at least there's going to be work for people until it's done.

Sometimes, the anti-immigration crowd reminds me of the anti-piracy crowd: they know full well they're not capable of fixing the problem, so they make a show of creating stricter and stricter security measures that fail to inconvenience anyone other than law-abiding citizens.

USAF; Mexicans leave Mexico because Mexico has a distinct lack of chances to succeed in life compared to the US, which is why they come here in the first place. Helping Mexico's status improve will help stem the tide of Mexicans coming here. Also, Mexico is not the only place they're coming from, it's just that a lot of South Americans take a path through Mexico. But they likely have other paths to take to come here, which makes the idea of fences out in the water even more ridiculous.

Only some. Usually in america, you need people that speak English for tour guides.

Before this there were about 5 wood posts in the water out to 5 feet. Basically anyone could walk around.

Why they dont just build a guard tower w/ security agents, or just cameras, is beyond me.

It's probably just the fact they need something on the border, and this would get approval from congress more easily then extra funding for cameras and stuff

I don't get it. Why do something so self-destructive? Making enemies with everyone, and just stubbornly building walls (in this case, literally) to avoid a complex problem instead of trying to work with the reality of the situation. There has to be an exceptional cause to fight for, and I don't see such a legitimate reason here.

This is similar to what I just don't get about some bullies. They go as far as to hurt themselves just to bully someone. Why?

It's ridiculous, I agree, but it still has that attitude of not caring about any consequences just to be in denial mode against a problem.

What would this fence accomplish? It's costly and has side effects. And yet people try to force it, simply because of hatred against immigration.

At least a fence can sometimes keep out people on foot. But aren't most Columbian drug deliveries (which I think this is supposed to stop) done by plane?

Well, it's not a binary problem, "solved" or "not solved". It's gradual: What can be done is to prevent as many people as possible to cross into one's territory illegally.
