@Polarstern It's the same with the Asians from the West Coast. The majority of them want only white or Asian guys.

The Asian girls I know are brainwashed by their parents to believe that they need to be dating Asian men only, specifically of their ethnicity.

I call it the "bull-dyke" syndrome. It's not just an appearance, it's an attitude.

Some, in just my opinion, try too hard to look, sound, dress, and well pass as men. If they're being true to themselves, great. But as one of my bisexual friends put it, "If it looks, sounds, moves, and tries to be more masculine, might as well have the penis to finish it up." She calls it "penis-envy".

It's very similar to the Caucasian boy who is very enthralled with Urban African American culture. If you're really into the music, the history, the symbols, more power to you. As long as you're sincere and being true to your beliefs, great. But if you're trying to force yourself into a cartoon or a stereotype, that's when it's unhealthy.

Either way you have to be prepared that some people will be turned off of it.

I could never fathom white people's morbid fascination for gang culture.

They're not country clubs, dumbass, they're murdering psychopaths who make money off the suffering of others. There should be absolutely nothing appealing about that...

I see what you mean. I've observed that with the valley-girl gay men. I find it intensely irritating, because it's as if they think that being a girl is about talking about clothes with an annoying drawl.

It seems when a minority group is under extreme social pressures and persecution, some members of that group either consciously or unconsciously push their identity to be the most extreme example of that demographic.

The OMG flaming gay man, the Harley ridding lesbian, the straight-A Asian vegetarian, the thugged out African, the cornbread Caucasian, no one is immune from it.

[up][up] However we shouldn't really force people to stop doing what they genuinely like doing. If a member of a society acts stereotypically but understands that people who aren't stereotypical exists and is fine with that. Then I have no problem with them.

But there's the thing, there isn't always enough cultural interaction for people to know they are being a sterotype.

I don't know how many times I have to hear, "Your boyfriend is so articulate, for a black man." In fact almost every compliment I get on him is trailed with that slap. How many black men have you been around? Considering his education, he's not just articulate for a "black man". He's articulate for a man. period.

But as long as minorities, and honestly at least in America they won't be the minorities for long if the population keeps trending the way it does, keep that closed door to other groups, there can't be that honest exchange of knowledge.

I remember when Bill Cosby made those comments he did about the youth of the African American community needing to be more proactive in their life if they want to stop being treated as ill-educated and criminal people. The biggest outcry wasn't from Caucasians or Hispanics against him, it was from the African American community.

And I know other ethnic and cultural groups have done it to their own spokespeople. Muslim groups were up in arms over TLC's show "Muslim in America". Heaven forbid there be a real life example of how Muslims, just like Christians and Jews, have different ideas on what it means to be a Muslim and how to live that life in America.

A lot of it comes down to the notion of labelism/labelling theory. The exceptional becomes the typical, which becomes the stereotypical and all that.

[up][up][up] That's what it's all about, right? Do what you want as long as it doesn't infringe on other people's rights to do what they want.

[up][up][up][up] What's wrong with cornbread?

Either way, I don't get it. I've heard of white bread and vanilla, but we don't use cornbread around these parts. I mean, cornbread is yellow, and corn itself is native to Mexico. I think it was actually first made by some French people, though. Is that why?

If we wanted flavors and stuff that's actually native to Europe, we might end up with describing white people like "horseradish" or "spearmint," which... I would not use to describe white people.

If you want to continue with the white people = bread, I'd probably pick wonder bread or bunny bread, considering that shit's nasty.

Some of the African-American stereotypes sound rather bizarre from out here.

I mean, take the whole "watermelon" thing. Bwuh? I like watermelons. Thinking of them as some sort of ethnic food, let alone something that can be used as an insult... well, Does Not Compute.

But then again, food-related slurs rarely make sense. I have occasionally read people using "spaghetti-eating" as a slur against Italians, and, well, how is that supposed to be insulting?

But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.

Well, it's not too different from black people's morbid fascination with Italian mob (gang) culture; which in a strange hodgepodge of Affectionate Parody, Unfortunate Implications, and Misaimed Fandom gave rise to black thug culture.

It was movies like Scarface, The Godfather films, and stuff by Martin Scorcese that triggered so many people's imaginations and made the career criminal lifestyle appealing.

You had these pretty-boy Italians with their hot wives/girlfriends/mistresses. They were all about stuff like family and living a rich lifestyle and enjoying delicious pasta dinners.

People by and large forgot about the bloodbaths, the gruesome executions, the years and lives lost in Federal prisons, the burnout from crack and/or alcohol.

All these years later and it's the same thing. White boys from the suburbs (and some white girls) see these rappers talking about drinking Crystal (awful shit, btw), riding in some fancy Benz with three exotic-looking women, and throwing $100 bills as if it was confetti.

The extended prison stays, expensive divorces, more expensive paternity cases, and the abject shittiness of life in the ghetto don't seem to register.

Ah, that never gets old. But Gab, I gotta tell you, there was a time in my life when that was a big Berserk Button for me.

But then, you factor in the image of the uneducated black thug that black people themselves feed into... And then, factor in the exiling of blacks that don't subscribe to that dumb shit by the wider black community.

And yes, and it pains me to say it, I begin to "understand" the backhanded compliment.

Also, I think Italians like J-Wow are hot!

[up][up]Boy, then do I have some bad news for you...

[up][up][up] I used to get something quite similar to that (the "oh, you're so well-spoken" bit) when I was a kid, but I didn't realize it was a bad thing till I got older. Plus, it's true; I am a pretty good speaker, when I want to be, so it's a little more complicated than just a backhanded compliment, in my case.

@Tropetown - I too used to think it was a compliment when I was younger. But then I noticed people were getting impressed with relatively simple grammar that anyone with a 6th grade education should have.

And that's when it became a Berserk Button.

Of course, as I got older and interacted more with other blacks I ran across, I started to see why it actually stood out.

What Asians are you talking about?? First of all I know personally of three black women and a white girl who all thought Russell Wong was hot (hell, I'm straight, and I think he's hot).

Also here in the NYC, Asian Man/Black Woman pairings aren't turning heads as they once did. And of course Asian men always seemed to be able to pull white girls seemingly at will.

[up][up] Nope, I think she might possibly be half-Italian, though.

[up][up][up][up][up] Yeah, and it's a shame that things have to be that way. It has more to do with a culture that actively promotes Tall Poppy Syndrome, than it does with any real lack of potential; I've known plenty of black people who, while not all were what you'd call book-smart, were pretty damn smart by any objective standard.
