True, but its catchier. Besides, calling her out on her transphobic slurs is a running gag lately.

The Jem YMMV and main pages have attracted a lot of Weasel Words and Ron the Death Eater stuff lately.

I also saw a Word of Gay entry about Rapture, but can't find any sources for it. The entry said Christy Marx wanted to include canonical LGBT characters had the show not been canceled, and Rapture was a possible candidate.

Does anyone have a source for that?

[up] There's a ban-evading person who keeps making new accounts to make null edits to cartoon pages or messing with indentations, so sometimes pages they frequent have to be locked until further notice.

I've heard that a lot of stuff, including Rapture's semi Word of Gay and a whole bunch of Word of God stuff, come from old websites and forums, but I can't find them either.

I did find a website that has an episode treatment where Graphix would appear, which would've been Astral's debut.

http://totallyjem.jemmagic.com/jemcharacterastral.html

http://totallyjem.jemmagic.com/jemcharactergraphix.html

http://totallyjem.jemmagic.com/jemtimeline.html

Graphix did make it into the IDW comic, but only in the most recent miniseries and with a substantial redesign. If not for that she would've never appeared XD;

The Fan Film TRULY OUTRAGEOUS: A Jem Fan Film! was really good. The twists were surprisingly not out there. I guess it says a lot about Jem that the Bentons being attacked by Cobra and Kimber being a robot only makes me raise my eyebrow slightly.

I've never been fond of the idea of GI Joe and Jem taking place in one universe, but now I wanna see it in canon.

[up] Oh, Graphix. She appears in so many fan-works (heck, I have a fanfic where she's a major character). No one writes about the Mongrels or other scrapped characters... Just Graphix. I guess she's just an interesting foil to Clash. I admit, I do ship them together, but the comic already won me over on Clash/Blaze being the Clash OTP.

[up] I've read a few fanfics with her in it and seen some fanart of her. It's pretty common to see her in works where Clash is a major character.

GUESS WHO'S BACK FROM JEMCON 2018!!!

Ahem.

I saw a lot of cool people there! I'd say it was half girls half guys, mostly adults with a couple teens/kids. There were vintage dolls, playsets, etc. on display and for sale as well as high-end dolls and fan works (a meme was the Jemarama Llama aka Jem as a llama, which Christy Marx didn't know about til yesterday. There were also general 80s things for sale, including doll magazines, records, Ari Gold and Samantha Newark stuff (she had a con-exclusive record, "Hologram," for sale!) as well as anime and cartoon animation cells, posters, and comic book art and storyboards, as well as a couple volumes/posters of the IDW comics. The Jem live-action movie shirts were pretty popular to wear, too!

Here's highlights from the Q&A with Jem creator Christy Marx, Jem's speaking voice Samantha Newark, toy designer Stefanie Eskander, and storyboard artist Keith Tucker.

  • Graphix was designed as a valley girl graffiti artist and troublemaker who hung with the Misfits and/or Stingers. The reason she didn't have more depth to her character was because she was canceled before she could be fully conceived. I was unable to learn which band she preferred more, if any.

  • Rapture's supposed Word of Asexual turned out to be a case of God Never Said That; if Christy Marx did mention it at a con she doesn't remember doing so, and back when her character was being made it never crossed her mind. She does think Kimber/Stormer as a pairing is a natural progression of their close friendship, though.

  • The Jem animated movie was planned for '86 and was canceled after the GI Joe movie bombed. Nothing else was said that we didn't already know (Entropy, the Mongrels, etc.)

  • If the show had continued, the Jem/Jerrica/Jamie/Rio love triangle would've been resolved eventually cause you couldn't keep it up forever.

  • The Stingers were not replacing the Misfits in the toyline/show, just existing alongside them.

  • TONS of people asked about ways to bring Jem back, with a main concern being how much kids' toys have changed to younger and younger demographics and how Hasbro is unlikely to market to teens/adult collectors since they would be sold at a loss, as well as how much shallow licensing is done to tie in with cartoons/movies nowadays as opposed to being more fun/character-driven. Other questions involved a modernization of Jem, with fashions and technology being more up-to-date but the characters remaining the same. Everyone was excited about Funko Pop Jem and Pizzazz being leaked.

  • Samantha Newark is Jem's speaking voice despite being a singer herself because Britta Phillips was already cast as Jem's singing voice when her agent called; they needed someone to match the singing voice.

  • One appeal of the Jem toyline to Stefanie was how tall the dolls are; having taken a look at them I agree! A guy in the audience also asked how come it's so hard to put on the dolls' tights and they were like 'Have you seen US trying to put them on?"

  • My Grumpy Bear Care Bears plush made Christy recall an anecdote around 1982-ish, when Denny's commissioned her to design Care Bears art for their placemats. At the time she thought the designs were ugly and unappealing (she sees their appeal nowadays though), so she designed her own bears and still got paid. (I'd love to see her Care Bear OCs XD)

  • When asked about spinoff/crossover ideas, one mentioned was a focus on the Starlight Girls, who would have their own adventures and slice-of-life stuff while talking to Jem and the Holograms and such. Crossover stuff included GI Joe, which was technically canon since Jem music had been mentioned in that show. Transformers also had recolored members of the Jem cast in the infamous episode "B.O.T."

  • The reason the writers' bible wasn't widely distributed was because of Sunbow, not Hasbro; an angry Sunbow exec from the 90's made Christy put the bible on a hidden page.

  • Keith had storyboard books set up at his booth showing the storyboards for several songs and how they were made.

  • They also had a free short story/fanfic given out, where at Jem's inauguration into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, several of their items were stolen, leading to surprising help from the still-jealous Misfits! (If anyone asks Pizzazz her age she says she's 39, and Aja ended up marrying Craig, Stormer's brother.) The culprits turned out to be the Limp Lizards, who were jealous of both bands' fame (they were never-wases instead of has-beens) but were really sorry about stealing the stuff. The Holograms forgave them and Kimber suggested they spin it so the Limp Lizards 'found' the stolen stuff and became renowned as heroes. At the inauguration Jem asked that the Misfits also be inducted into the Hall of Fame, and thanked everyone for helping her get this far, including the Limp Lizards. (Nobody remembers the Space Cadets, though XD)

  • They also had the initial treatment for the episode "The Day The Music Died," written by Roger Slifer (with the episode by Jeffrey Scott) which was radically different at parts! Minx had her finalized name, but Rapture was named Fantasy. Originally Riot was to take Jem to a country estate, and when the Misfits took over the airwaves it was because the Jem and Stingers fans felt betrayed by their idols and turned to the Misfits instead, with many fans imitating their styles and rude behavior. Jem and Riot would only discover what was going on when a still-loyal Jem fan was being harassed by Misfit moppets. This was further altered in the second draft, which had Riot reveal some of his military past to Jem, the estate becoming a mountain resort, and a plot early on where Eric Raymond got rid of the Misfits and then had to eat his words when Pizzazz took control. The 'Behind the Music' talking-to-the-audience and interrupting the opening credits stuff was there from day 1, though, as Roger Slifer liked making things challenging for himself.

  • The drinks had funny names, like Pizzazz's Punch, Hard and Tough Kimber, Ba Neetia and the Bear, and Minx's Mixes.

[up] Starlight Girl spinoff? That would have been terrible. They're so uninteresting.

[up] It WOULD be a way to get in with the younger demographics though. (It was all hypothetical stuff and not actual spinoff/crossover plans.)

[up] Would it? Kid Appeal Characters tend to be hit-or-miss. The appeal of Jem comes from adults going through adult soap opera drama and having cool jobs. The Starlight Girls are just normal kids.

Not to mention, though I'm sure they'd expand on it in a spinoff, the Starlight Girls didnt have any real life outside of the Starlight House. I mean, outside of Ashley, can you think of anything that one of the S Gs did on her own, and by that I mean without help or involving the Holograms?

I've heard rumors that Jem changed the theme song because The Misfits threatened to sue. Is that legit or does it fall under Pop-Culture Urban Legends?

I'm guessing under Pop Culture Urban Legends.

Not from what I remember, though the movie-logo shirts were pretty popular.
