Amazons Attack #5:

  • Faruka and an unconscious Nubia are confronted by Peacemaker. While unconscious, Nubia has a vision of the past in which a mysterious hooded figure helps Heracles imprison and enslave the Amazons.

  • Something possesses Yara and forces Mary Marvel down to the ground.

  • Hoppy comes to the Amazons' rescue and teleports them to various locations. They end up in Mumbai, India where Nubia is trying to tell Peacemaker that the Amazons are not the enemy. Unfortunately, she is shot by a little boy who has been scared by anti-Amazon propaganda.

  • After getting away, Nubia and Faruka have a talk about their respective views on man's world as Faruka tends to Nubia's wound. Faruka talks about how as queen of the Bana, she has seen so many abused women come to her Amazon tribe as they fled abuse and persecution and doesn't understand why Nubia shows so much faith in man's world. Nubia acknowledges the flaws in man's world but also the good. Then Faruka knocks her out.

  • When Nubia comes to, she finds herself tied up next to Mary and Faruka claims that she has "saved" the Amazons who are now all petrified.

So not counting Hippolyte/Hippolyta and Tara Terruna, we have the template set with Wonder Woman Diana of Paradise Island/Themyscira, Wonder Girl Donna Troy, Wonder Woman Nubia, Wonder Woman turned Moonlighting Demon Hunter Require Artemis, Wonder Girl Cassie Sandsmark, Xiao Quing Wonder-Woman Peng Delian, Wonder Girl Yara Flor. Also not counting Orana and Philippus, who aren't part of the chain in this continuity, but I am giving them honorable mentions. Fury's not even in this continuity yet, but still worth considering. She's the start of her own category, which also includes Bobby Barnes and Solara.

I don't have a problem with Diana adopting a child. However, I don't like the character of Trinity, so far. Not just because there's already three faced Teen Titans villain android named Trinity, not just because her personality rubbed me the wrong way as someone with no real attachment to John Kent and no familiarity with Damien Wayne, but because, as I think I have made clear already, there are already six allied Wonder Woman variants in this continuity if we leave out Hippolyta and two more that could easily fit into this continuity, even if we just ignore Tara. The concept of Diana adopting? I'm for it. Trinity herself? Well, she's arrogant. Artemis and Yara already covered that. She's another member of the Themyscira tribe? So are Donna and Nubia. She's got a lasso that does something different? So does everyone else but Yara in this extant continuity. In the other category, Fury has no special equipment associated with her and Bobby only has bracelets of submission, but there's no reason they couldn't be given something distinct. I'm not willing to write Trinity off just yet. I'm still willing to see where things go, but so far there's nothing appealing to her about me. Yara Flor at least had "Brazilian", indigenous Brazilian, going for her. I don't particularly like where DC has gone with Yara, but I'll admit DC really hasn't gone very far with Yara. There's plenty of room to right the ship, but instead of filling out the details of yet another underdeveloped Wonder Woman concept we're getting another, another not even that interesting. "Adopted" does make Trinity standout, but only in the sense she's an adopted daughter, rather than an adopted sister like Donna...and Bobby could have been an adopted child too. Hell, Solara could be an adopted child, adapted a bit so she's not really Solara, the way Star Blossom clearly isn't Star Lilly. If Trinity was effectively Germany's Wonder Woman/Wonder Girl, the way Yara Flor is supposed to be Brazil's, I could get behind that. If Trinity was Italy's hero, Japan's, Korea's, Ethiopia's, Poland's, I could get behind that. There's just not enough that makes her stand out from the pack yet. Whatever one's opinion of Yara Flor might be, she stood out right away. Peng stood out right away...Cassie, well there wasn't as much competition back then, but switch Peng and Cassie, "the horse faced Wonder Girl" still leaves a better first impression than Trinity.

There is a thread for your own ideas for DC and Marvel continuities. I think it might be best if you share your ideas there.

I have posted there, once or twice. Might do it again, I do have many ideas. The point of that last post here wasn't to show off how good or creative my ideas were though. It was just a continuation of last page's spoiler tagged discussion. Yes, it is a fine idea. No, I don't like what has resulted from it so far. I gave my reasons, in detail.

I've got mixed feelings on this run all around. Quite a few negative knee jerks, BUT I can tell creative is taking its time with things, there is some reasoning behind almost everything, even if what that reasoning is isn't clear yet. It has turned out better than I expected so far, but I'm still not in love yet.

Regarding equipment: personally, I think only Diana and Trinity should have lassos.

I might agree with that, if DC was willing to kill off Donna, Cassie and Peng. I'd rather keep them and drop the new character, or have the new character go without a lasso. I'm perfectly fine with just pretending "The Golden Promise" stayed on "Earth 3" either way.

I like that Hestia was responsible for Wonder Woman's sisterhood with fire and the magic lasso's truth-telling ability. She's often overlooked both in the comics and in classical mythology discussions despite being one of the most important gods in the pantheon IRL (she presided over the hearth, home, and family) so it's nice she got some love.

There's a joke in their, somewhere, about one of the most beloved goddesses not getting enough of it.

Or maybe about the family goddess choosing to give up her seat among the ruling twelve.

Alternatively, it's because, as goddess of the hearth, Hestia spends all their time tending the hearth, so doesn't get out of the house much.

As with Ares, there aren't a lot of stories about her specifically. Guess the old Greek writers didn't have much to say about her. Or else, as a particularly beloved goddess, they didn't think they could portray her as a vindictive amoral ass, they way they frequently did the other Olympians.

Yeah, the only Hestia stories I know of are the one where she chooses to remain a virginal goddess and the one where Priapus tries to attack her in her sleep but every Olympian in the room rushes to her defense.

Hestia is like Hades, mostly focused on doing her job and all, except she doesn't get dragged into stuff that we know of.

Speaking of Hades, in Peter David's Aquaman run (Volume 5) #46, Aquaman deliberately gets himself killed by Triton so he can rescue Poseidon from Hades (the place). Hades (the god) agrees to let them both go, but on the condition that Aquaman owes him a favor (he deems it on par with the deal he made with Orpheus).

I wonder if that favor was ever called in before Hades' death in Wonder Woman Vol 2 #217.

If I was doing a retread of that story I'd have called it "For A Man Who Has Many Things".

I find it strange there's nothing on her megalodon patrolled island that qualifies as a suitable gift. Admittedly, I don't keep up with the books of that sub franchise. Maybe there isn't anything on the mystical island he'd like...but he wouldn't like any fantastic pastries whose ingredients can only be found there? No fifty year old Greek/Roman/Themysciran wines? No literally magic mushrooms? He wouldn't want to ride a giant flying kangaroo for a day? To own a reprint of something in their libraries that wasn't preserved somewhere else/never translated? There's nothing on Olympus either, or in the realm of Concordia, or in Elysium? Green Snake, Ratatosk and Hanuman don't know of any places with better parking?

Those are my first impressions. I'm not following the logic previewed, but, admittedly, I don't keep up with the other books. Everything I typed may very well be addressed on panel. I like that unintentional(?) flex by Superman. I could see this going in some interesting directions.

Maybe the problem is that Bruce is such a Comically Serious workaholic, it's a question of whether there's anything Bruce would actually enjoy.

Honestly, that issue was probably the best one of King's run so far. I still don't like Diana's "Foreigner who learned English from 100 years ago" dialogue, but it managed to be a very fun and light story.

Probably the best part was Diana responding to be called "big lady" by saying she's only average for an Amazon and should actually be bigger.

Preview pages for Amazons Attack #6.

The villain is revealed to be Ismene Dimakos, aka Asylum. She is one of the original Amazons and believes the Amazons earned man's wrath by being bold and outspoken instead of quiet and submissive. She also doesn't care for the Bana and the Esquecida.

Gotta admit, I'm a little disappointed. When they told us an ancient enemy of the amazons was behind everything I figured it would be someone we actually knew. I've never heard of this woman before this year and I've read a whole lot of classical mythology texts, and a more than few Wonder Woman comic books. I guess it could still be revealed that there is in fact someone else pulling the strings of this string puller, that her true name is that of some well known or at least established character, but that's my first impression, mild disappointment.

Also, an Earthquake machine? Doctor Cyber called, she wants her gimmick back!

Amazons Attack #6.

Asylum tries to break the heroes' spirit but fails. After she is defeated, Nubia and company turn her over to A.X.E.

This miniseries was quite a pleasant surprise. I did not expect to enjoy a series with this name so much. It has done a great job of humanizing and developing the Amazon characters. I hope we get more like this.
