Since we're the only ones that sinfully defile ourselves in such a fashion, I figured this was as good a place as any to discuss the relative merits of Saint Nick O'Teen.

I've been a smoker since I was 14; puffed my first cig that summer and never looked back. I think it was a Salem and it gave me a wicked head rush.

I've since moved on to become a pack-a-day smoker (more if I'm drinking, but I try not to overdo it)...my preferences today;

  • What I smoke day-to-day: Rollies, made from Drum. It saves money and goes with the mustache and fedora. I used to love Pall Malls (only brand with enough bite) but even they are too expensive for my pocketbook.
  • What I get when I'm feeling spendy" Dunhills. The Brits know tobacco. Either that or Djarum Blacks, but only for a Con...they make me nostalgic for my Goth-boy days.

I also enjoy a good cigar, but only with a glass of cognac and a good conversation partner to go with. I prefer Rum dipped Robustos (I believe that is the "large-but-short" variety; the huge truncheon-looking motherfuckers just take too long to smoke and get foul by the end).

I own two pipes, but smoking them is just too much maintenance for day-to-day. I drag them out sometimes, but these days I'm saving my pennies for a hookah. Shisha is just too damn tasty.

Anyone else?

I'm lightly interested in trying a starter cigar, probably flavored, and perhaps hookah, both just once.

Should I not bother with this thread?

Bother with it. And try the hookah, smoking one of those is easy for a non-smoker unless you're actually allergic to tobacco. And even then, they make non-tobacco shisha.

Getcher skinny ass over to the Quads, and I'll take you to my cigar bar, Drunkie. They also do hookahs, and it's positively decadent.

My smokes of choice are American Spirit light blue pack (full flavor). They're one of the more expensive brands that aren't specialty smokes, but they have no additives, just tobacco.

I'm at about a pack a day, although in practice I actually smoke less than half of that amount — the rest burns away in the ashtray or while I'm holding-but-not-smoking it. I also use a holder with a replaceable filter cartridge; started doing that when the cough and crap got really bad, and it's made a big difference.

When I really feel like splurging and don't care what kind of crap I'm going to cough up, it used to be Sobranie Black Russians. I haven't been able to find them for ages, though.

@Maddie: oooh, cigar bar. We can't have those here, stupid clean air act.

Anyhow, yeah...the waste factor was another reason I switched to rolling my own. I can make one customized to my current smoking needs; skinny for when I want a few puffs, or nice and fat for those "I've had a bad day and it's either nicotine or homicide" moments. Sure a little of the tobacco ends up in the ashtray (due to the lack of filter) but its better than paying almost $8 a pack and watching half the cig end up in the ashtray outside.

I like American Spirits, but they take too long to smoke. The one I miss is Lucky Strike filters...I haven't seen them for years around where I live, are they even made anymore?

I don't think so. Now that you mention it, I don't recall seeing them around either.

Around here the cigar bars are the only places you can smoke in a business or workplace. Apparently, in a rare act of common sense, the legislators realized that if you've voluntarily walked into a place that exists for the sole purpose of consuming burning (or roasting) tobacco products, you have no business bitching about second-hand smoke.

Damn, those were my favorite. I also take extreme issue with the "flavored cigarette" ban...the Djarum Little Cigars are not the same.

I'm pretty sure we don't have such levelheadedness in my state, but I wish we did, even though I'm not a smoker.

I've been often seriously tempted to start smoking a pipe — I really like the smell of tobacco, and I hear that the pipe is not as dangerous as cigarettes and the like.

It's probably a good idea if I avoid it — I mean, come on, I already have enough vices — but damn, even second-hand tobacco smoke smells so good to me...

But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.

I am not a habitual smoker. I very rarely smoke. I picked up a preference for "cigarillos", swisher sweets, black and milds, blak and golds, and various small cigars. I have yet to try one of the larger stogies. Most of my preferences come from what is commonly used by U.S. Marines. Is used to chew but not smoke swisher sweets. I can't stand ciggerettes because the taste of paper ash is just too strong.

Hand rolled sun dried cigars are the way to go for me. I need to visit my local cigar bar for giggles and see if it is any good.

You can still buy flavoured smokes out here. You can buy them in gas stations and smoke shops. Mint and cherry have been my favourites...and clove shhhh tell no one.

Only yesterday I smoked the last of my stogie-stash. I must purchase more. They were Heeren van Ruysdael and very nice. I must say, I do prefer the Dutch-style cigars to their Caribbean counterparts.

How do they differ? The cigar bar here doesn't have much that isn't Caribbean/South American.

So, I found that putting a bit of orange peel in my loose tobacco does a good job of keeping it moist...a big problem with rolling your own (and buying in quantity) is that the raw materials get dried out and useless. Orange peel seems to help with that. Anyone else have that experience?

Also, the can of tobacco smells a lot nicer.

I'm not much of a smoker cause of asthma, but I had a few clove cigarettes in my day. those are so yummy. The regular ones taste like gross to me.

I love love love a man with a pipe though. When Boyo is a grandpa, I shall encourage him to get a pipe.

@Doodles: cloves are sin. Sweet, smoky, tasty sin. I used to smoke a pipe (it was too much maintenance so I gave it up), and I do miss the flavor.

I am aware, I get them on occasion. Not quite the same as a good pinch in a briar, though.

I'm still trying to figure out how to adequately describe the flavour of Dutch cigars.

Happily, I have some whisky-flavoured pipe tobacco to help me think.

The cigars are mellower than their Leftpondian counterparts and somewhat drier, in as much as there seems to be a lot less tar. I'm not sure if this is inherent to tobacco from the East Indies or the result of some technique favoured by the Dutch in their manufacture. I have to say, they are very nice.

The whisky tobacco is good, but today it has been too windy to get the thing to light outdoors. :(

When I smoked a pipe I favored the less-sweet flavors, as they tended to not "bite the tongue" nearly as much. Captain Black was my go-to, but I cut it 50/50 with this wonderful coffee blend that my local tobacconist had.
