X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

I loved the sheer CONTEMPT for Apocalypse they had in UXM.

Sinister was at one point intended to be a child mutant with an astral-projection ability. That's why he has a goofy name and an over-the-top costume - he's a ten-year-old boy's idea of what a cool supervillain is.

Yeah, that was what I was thinking.

Mr. Sinister isn't particularly different from anyone else in the supervillain pantheon of silly.

Of course, I remember Mr. Sinister debuting as the guy behind Madelyne Pryor's Character Derailment. Which also had him as the guy who gave Cyclops his ruby red visor. So, that wouldn't work itself.

"I think the last time he was used was Mr. Sinister running a steampunk kingdom with a bunch of Madelyne Pryor clones and...it was actually the worst comic I've ever read." Seriously? I loved that. Gillen made Sinister so fun and charming. I really loved that take on Sinister. Madelyne clones and all.

As for what Sinister's been up to since then: Stuff. He's still around. He was in Extraordinary X-Men, declaring mutants were doomed. (Illyana decapitated him. It didn't shut him up.) He was in that Monsters Unleashed ongoing, as part of a new Intelligentsia. And he was recently in Secret Warriors, trying to re-create the Terrigen Mists.

It's the case of "Every comic book character has the ONE FAN who loves them more than they should." In my case, it's the fact I'm one of the guys who really-really loved Madelyne Pryor in her X-men run after she was dumped by Cyclops unceremoniously and ended up being their Muggle commando friend. Then I loved Madelyne Pryor when she was with X-man (except she wasn't). So I don't much care when she makes her random show ups as a villain or as a bunch of cloned slaves for Sinister.

It was meant to be wacky and fun in the steampunk arc but I couldn't get into the spirit of the thing because Sinister is a guy my childhood comic book fan took pretty seriously as a threat given all the horrible atrocities he's done ala Mutant Massacre.

Still, more power to you as it **should** have been hilarious.

You did not read the complete story. Check Ultimate X-Men #90 onwards, and you will find the actual version of Ultimate Apocalypse and Sinister.

Oh I read it but that seemed like a pretty deliberate retcon.

Ultimate X-men started going downhill from the time they killed Beast to the end when they realized they'd killed so much of the cast they had to start over from scratch.

I don't think so. Many ongoing plots end there, such as the Phoenix thing and the time traveler guys.

So yesterday I went down a sort of internet nostalgia trip looking at some X-Men action figures I either owned or frequently saw, so could somebody please tell me whether this guy is an actual character? His name's Omega and his box describes him as a minion of Apocalypse (who he looks kinda like), but I've never been able to find any reference to him that isn't this figure. Nothing on Marvel Wikia, uncannyxmen.net, zip.

This dude was on store pegs everywhere in the late '90s and I definitely recall wondering what his deal was even then.

[up] On that link there's a "character profile" link that I clicked that says he's an alternate universe version of Omega Red from the Age of Apocalypse timeline.

Huh. How'd I miss that? What an obscure character to make an action figure of.

Especially considering the other characters in that Toyline - Wolverine, Cyclops, Sabretooth, Jean Grey, Beast, and Storm. And then... Omega.

Wait, they were all made by Toy Biz, clearly this is Ike Perlmutter's doing.

Wow, Omega is literally alive for two and a half pages of X-Man #2. And yet I'm pretty sure there's still several members of the actual X-Men that have no action figures...

So after starting to watch the 90's series, I decided to try and start reading the 90's comics. I've read everything up until the end of the Claremont run and nearly everything from Morrison on, but I haven't really read anything in between.(Ao A aside.) And so I figured it was time to rectify that.

Uh, yeah. That might have been a bad idea. Or at least it might have been a bad idea to start right after Claremont because Uncanny #281 is rough. It's not the worst comic I've ever read, far from it, but I can't say it's all that good. After Claremont left and so suddenly at that, Marvel was scrambling to find some proper replacements to fill the void that their precious superstar had left behind, and the result was nothing short of a mess. Characterization is almost non-existent, while the series of events charitably called a plot is hastily done and doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. All that's left is a bunch of disconnected action scenes, without much else to it. The only saving grace is Jim Lee's art, but great art isn't enough to save a bad script. In any case, I'm willing to give the 90's comics another chance because I know it couldn't have been easy to replace Claremont just like that, but that first issue didn't really leave the best impression.

The family titles like Generation X and post-Liefeld X-Force tend to be better than the main title, which totally went to pot.

In terms of writing, Liefeld is someone I can tolerate compared to the likes of Chuck Austen. Brr. Holy War was a nightmare to get through and it was only two issues.

Does anyone know if the 90's comics were ever collected? I mean, I can read them via YOHOHO AND A BOTTLE OF RUM! if I have to, but it'd still be nice to be able to read them on my tablet.

There are few. Generation X only got two collections. Warren Ellis' Excalibur is collected. There are scattered story arcs here and there.

Most you're gonna get is the crossover titles.

I think the only series getting dedicated collections is Cable.

yoooooo District X is on comixology.

But not the end of it.

Barnacles.

I don't know why this collection of post Operation Zero Tolerance comics has been collected as X-Men Gold Vol. 0, but I sure do like it. Cece Reyes, Maggott, Scott and Jean as funny den parents, Iceman in a speedo, and Beast as the lovable scientist instead of a war criminal.
