X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

Sadly Bendis already turned her into a Jessica Jones villain.

Probably for the best, we don't want Carol to start thinking she was right.

The problem with Mystique as a Captain Marvel villain is it kinda takes a clever writer to utilize her as a threat. It's like Superman vs. Luthor except Mystique doesn't even get the benefit of Kryptonite or Powered Armor.

Oh hey, speaking of Mystique, interesting bit of trivia here: Claremont didn't originally envision her as Nightcrawler's mother, but rather his father, the idea being was that she'd have turned into a man and impregnated Destiny. Shooter turned it down because he felt there was no way that one was getting by the censors. I've seen some fans who'd like to see it recanonized, though, if only because it'd be better than Azazel.

The funny thing is First Class made me hate Azazel slightly less.

You know, it never occurred to me before, but Teen Cyclop's uniform in Champions (2016) reminds me a little bit of his Xmen Evolution costume.

Now obviously they aren't exactly the same but I still feel like there's some design similarity, with the biggest difference being the size of the big X on both.

So, I just watched X-Men: Apocalypse.

It is not a good movie.

Also, Jean's an asshole. Scott bumps into her while he's wearing a blindfold, and she tells him to watch where he's going. He's blindfolded, you jackass! Worst Jean Grey ever, because of that one line alone.

Edit: My livetweet of it is collected here.

Did she realize he was blindfolded when she first bumped into him?

I never gave that line much thought at the time, but now that you've brought it up, I do think it's possible she didn't realize he was unable to see at the time.

I know Teen Jean has soured all of us on a younger Jean Grey, but her movie really shouldn't be judged on that single act.

But yeah, Apocalypse can only say it's the best of the bad Xmen movies (The Last Stand and Origins Wolverine) and that's not much of a compliment, as it's nigh impossible to be worse than those movies.

[up] She was looking at him when she finished saying it, at least, and she didn't apologize. Like, is it so hard to say, "Oh, sorry."

I love Teen Jean in the comics. I think she's great. So she definitely didn't sour me on Apocalypse Jean. It did come down to that one line. And my dislike of Apocalypse Scott came from the moment when he called Xavier's School a prison and generally acted like a douche.

So it seems Emma will be helping with the resistance against Nazi Cap. I guess I'm glad they had the restraint to have her not go 100% cackling harridan, at least.

@ tiamatty we're talking about a place closed off from the rest of the world sand whose true purpose is hidden. I don't blame Scott for not being to thrilled about it

[up] Sure. But he just didn't behave like Scott in that scene. It came across as them trying to present him as The Cool Kid, and that just doesn't work. I love Scott. He's one of my favourite characters. He's awesome. But he is not, and has never been, The Cool Guy. He's not a rebellious rule-breaker. He's smart, analytical, responsible, and a total square. I get that they wanted to send some of the kids to a mall, but there were better ways of going about it than having Scott be all, " School is, like, a prison, man, and we're all prisoners in it, so let's, like, do a jailbreak. And if The Man doesn't like it, then that's just, like, his problem, you know?" *pops collar, puts on sunglasses over top of the sunglasses he's already wearing*

They could have had him complain about feeling cooped up and wanting to get out and asking if anyone wants to hit a mall. And then Jubilee - Ms. "Does a mall baby eat chili fries" herself, the character who would be able to find a mall in the middle of a desert - would get freakishly excited about it and dominate the rest of the scene and get the others excited about it. And then the mall scene would be kept in because what the hell, why would you cut something so charming. The X-Men movies need more stuff like that.

Yeah I did not like how they made Scott more of a rebel when he's not supposed to be. Dude's a Goddamn boy-scot alright.

A basic issue in the X-movies, they change character personalities more often than not.

Look at Angel or really Mystique. I know the reason is pretty much because she's played by Jennifer Lawrence but Mystique is not a hero & definitely should not be a leader of the X-Men.

[up] Yeah, and she's also a terrible mother who would used her own children for her personal gain and a known terrorist who gladly killed innocent people.

Honestly that change to her character really bugged in two ways:

  • It's made in response to her fame in the Hunger Games movie. Which is the equivalent to making Chris Evan's character in Snowpiercer as morally upstanding as his Captain America. Thankfully the film itself averted that, which is what I wish to say the same with Mystique's character
  • She is far more interesting as a villain. If they wanted her to be like Katniss, why not make her a darker interpretation of that character? I surely would have enjoyed it just like I did with Curtis who is basically Captain America but with a shadier past, more violent nature and extremely flawed character wise.

It's really one of the reasons why she is the weakest part in X-Men Apocalypse. It's odd seeing a character who has often been portrayed as a vile and dastardly individual all of a sudden is portrayed as the most heroic character who inspires others. I would of prefer if they went with a Che Guevara approach with Mystique and her influence on others, but nope she's 100% goody goody two shoes who can do no wrong.

I want my bitch back.

Surprised the comics haven't adopted that approach. Maybe that's the reason she's on an X-Men team

I know right. And that is actually one of the approach I want to reinvent with my take on X-Men. Namely have the Brotherhood of Mutants initially portrayed as heroic icons and freedom fighters, but eventually shows shades of villainy with their members either being sociopathic, manipulative, and just as hateful as the humans they rebel against.

Mystique did have that run on Freedom Force where she could have kinda sorta maybe been seen as a hero.

I just assumed this was an extreme adaptation of that time in her life...

You know, if you ignore the fact that she'd already murdered Carol Danver's boyfriend back then.

Shes done too much awful shit willingly to be a hero, she works better as an anti-hero/villain at least.

Seriously its fucking surreal seeing Storm of all people telling Apocalypse that she wants to be like Mystique & how awesome she is or how all the X-kids idolize her after the mansion blew up while she constantly says shes not a hero or some shit everytime as a response to people.

Now I like Jennifer Lawrence but I kinda wished they casted someone else for Mystique if her fame was gonna irrevocably change the character so much.

Why should the film series be bound by the main comic universe with how it portrays characters? If the First Class franchise wants to make Mystique more moral than Comic!Mystique that's there call to make.

[up] And there have been alternate reality versions of Mystique that weren't bad, as well, though not actually all that many.

Personally, I'm just sick of the movies focusing on such a limited group of characters. Xavier, Magneto, Wolverine, Mystique and Jean have been desperately overplayed, and I want the films to move the fuck on. It's why I'm actually looking forward to New Mutants. If they keep Magneto and Mystique out of it, and limit Xavier's role? Then it should be great. (If, on the other hand, Mystique is a major character in it? Then it'll be total garbage.)

So the current speculation is that the "returned" Wolverine being teased in Gold is Jimmy Hudson from the Ultimate universe. I guess it'd make sense since like Miles, Ganke, or Bombshell he's one of the few Ultimate heroes who doesn't have a 616 counterpart.
