I was far too stupid to believe it would be simple as that.
So here is a small exercise I'm doing to get accustomed to the various brushes.◊
I'm currently inking and colouring this◊ in GIMP.
As usual, I am leaping headlong into things that I have no idea how to achieve. Ho hum.
Be not afraid...In this WIP◊, I rediscover why I hate cheap cartridge paper and prove that I can't draw hands or beards. Characters are the Endless from The Sandman: Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair and Delirium. I'm curious as to whether anyone can identify each without having read the comic before.
Sketching is mostly done - not quite satisfied with Desire (rather fittingly), but I've just about worn through the paper with my constant erasing. Not sure what I'm going to do afterwards - should I paint it? I was thinking of adding some watercolour work: navy wash for Dream's cloud thing and some detail to the other Endless. Delirium at least deserves a bit of colour.
Edit: I think I'll do something like this◊. Grey wash, with pale colours for highlights.

"Doctor Who means never having to say you're kidding." - BocajDouble-posting because I have another WIP◊! I'm attempting two new things in this drawing: one, combining bits from several reference pictures while still aiming for realism; and two, using watercolour pencil to draw/paint a person.
"Doctor Who means never having to say you're kidding." - BocajThaaat looks amazing. I envy those who can render human skin well.
Shows the steps from one of my drawings.
What am I doing here again? What are you doing here? I lurk around at Deviantart rather than here.An attempt at painting glass.◊ The hard part hasn't begun yet.
This◊ is progressing along slowly but nicely. Having a spot of trouble working out how to texture clothing and colour white beards. Or beards in general, really. Curse you, beardy Wizards!
"Doctor Who means never having to say you're kidding." - BocajI'm putting this in the Work-in-Progress thread since I plan to color it when I have more time on my hands.

My DeviantArt Domain My TumblrVery nice work! One suggestion: make her lower leg slightly longer. The proportions are a bit off.
"Doctor Who means never having to say you're kidding." - BocajUnfortunately I couldn't fit a longer leg onto the paper IIRC.
Anyway, here's the same character hunting in the jungle.
My DeviantArt Domain My TumblrSome WI Ps:
- Body axes, how do they work?◊
- Apparently depicts a monster trying to catch a bird that has stolen its dinner.◊
- Fairies make the best frameworks for plants to grow on.◊
Edgeworth looks a little shrunken... :P The other two look pretty!
The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableCurrently working on a piece with two people walking down some stone stairs. Uh, so many lines....
Be not afraid...^^Or Nick swelled up... I drew Edgey first, and it should now be evident why I only draw busts.
"Doctor Who means never having to say you're kidding." - BocajHm...enough flowers?
"Doctor Who means never having to say you're kidding." - BocajNEVER.
I like it. :D
ᐅᖃᐅᓯᖅ ᐊᑕᐅᓯᖅ ᓈᒻᒪᔪᐃᑦᑐᖅI'm reading the Journey artbook. It's absolutely amazing. The book has a fair bit of commentary on the design process. It's pricy, but I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to gain some insight on designing iconic characters, landscapes and architecture. Matthew Nava's drawings are gorgeous from his rough sketches (learning from these!) to the finished models.
Did I mention the book can do this? it can do that.

"Doctor Who means never having to say you're kidding." - BocajI think this is the wrong thread, pal.
But damn how's that even possible!? The AR feature looks great.
I wish I didn't live in the south hemisphere. The book looks so good.
^When I started this thread, I also intended it to be a place for people to talk about the planning process in general, including sketches by other people. Also, I'm from the southern hemisphere too.

"Doctor Who means never having to say you're kidding." - BocajOh, sorry, wasn't aware of that. And the problem to me with location comes from shipping cost. The book alone would be something around 90 US dollars to me. Too pricey.
Augh, that bad? Shipping is always a pain, I agree.
"Doctor Who means never having to say you're kidding." - BocajThose of you who've looked at Hello Artists recently have probably seen this.◊
Well, I'm trying to compile a sketch dump of this character in her current design*, from a bunch of different angles. I'm going to do the same with every major character in the series, so I can get used to drawing them consistently.
Either way, it's a challenge, because I'm already sick of drawing her. I've already re-done the same few poses at least 15 times this week, just trying to get them right, and whenever I have to draw the same character that many times in a row, it starts to feel weirdly stalker-ish.
Here's my sketch for the next drawing.◊ It was referenced from a photo with the same angle and pose.
I adjusted the levels so you can see more of the half-erased lines in the background. That should give an idea about how many variations on the face shape and angle I tried.
It's almost right, but I need to make some changes. For one, I don't like the open mouth. It's charmingly awkward, but it also makes her look like she's about to say something. Which she's not. Also, the face needs to be smaller, so I can fit the whole thing on the page.
BTW: Two unique problems I've run into with Laurie:
- When drawing a character who's supposed to be intentionally plain, but not outright ugly or strange looking, getting the proportions right gets mad important, because if you make the face a centimeter too long or too short, the balance gets thrown off.
- I have relatively little to work with. Her eyes are never visible and her emotional range is intentionally limited, so tiny things like the angle of her eyebrows, or exactly how you draw a frown (there are probably hundreds of ways) will define how she comes off looking.

Project progress: The Adroan (102k words), The Pigeon Witch, (40k). Done but in need of reworking: Yume Hime, (50k)
This is maybe 1/4th done.◊
And no, it's not as crooked as it looks. That's only because I accidentally photographed it from an angle.
When it's done, it'll be the most complex thing I've ever drawn. And yes, the things you see in the picture are all I'm using to do it.
