Basically on the Gentleman Wizard page someone just added a picture. And while I agree a picture would be good to demonstrate the trope, this picture is just completely wrong. I think you guys can do better. The ideal image would have a man in Victorian or Edwardian clothing (which this picture does not follow) who is clearly magic in some way, that is to say doing magic or sorcery, but doesn't look simply like a stage magician. Something like a magical pet would help as well, like a Shoulder-Sized Dragon.

Based on the filename, I think that character is Elminster...might be an example, but he doesn't look especially gentlemanly.

Motion to pull

Doesn't adequately demonstrate the trope

Bump. Please get that picture off, the more I see it the more it's so wrong and makes me bizarrely angry >.<

As someone who follows the Forgotten Realms setting, I can say that not only does he not look like an example, he isn't really an example anyway.

+1 to pull.

[up]Normally we should wait a little longer, but I don't think anyone will complain.

Some sort of Mandrake The Magician? [1]

Rhymes with "Protracted."

Good, except it seems to fall short of the

..that doesn't look like just a stage magician

part. We need some actual magic.

Also that picture has terrible quality evil grin

I was thinking of trying to find book covers that have these characters in them, thinking maybe they might have appropriate character on the front to steal.

I'm not sure what the policy is for using deviant art pics, but this looked like it was in the right direction 1.

Gentlemanly enough?

There is also the screencap that this avatar was made from. The avatar size is obviously too small, but I could find/rescreen the image.

First one, no. Second one if it were bigger, maybe.

The second one seems like it could be decent at a size where it's actually visible.

Most of the example in the page seem to be from literature, which makes finding a picture a pain. How much are we limiting our options to Gas Lamp Fantasy?

Edit PS:

What about this?

[up] I don't get enough out of that to conclusively think "wizard".

The familiar and the skull tipped staff are a hint.

That's kinda the problem with depending on picture alone to communicate things like this. The only thing that will make someone think "Wizard" is a Robe and Wizard Hat, but that doesn't convey the gentleman part.

I don't really get "Wizard" either. The staff could easily just be a cane, and the rat might just be a rat. It wouldn't be the first time somebody had a rat for a pet. Nothing about the picture looks magical.

"He'll also be a Sharp-Dressed Man, in dapper Victorian or Edwardian attire, possibly embellished to show off the fact that he's magical, and if he has a walking-stick it will no doubt be his wizard's staff or act as a magic focus at least once."

That's pretty much what the picture shows. Even the idea that they look magical is optional. The whole idea of the trope is that they don't look like classical pseudo-medieval wizards, they look like ordinary late 19th century, early 20th century middle-to-upper-class.

[up]That's entirely true, but there should still be something magical in the picture. If the trope is "a wizard who looks like a Victorian gentleman", we need a picture of a wizard who looks like a Victorian gentleman. We shouldn't just take a random Victorian gentleman and put a caption saying "yeah, he's also a wizard". If the staff were glowing or something it would work.
