Some of them got mad at him, others had to fend off people who were mad.

Well, there is the so-called Bible Code. The bible (that is, the original version and the dead sea scrolls) are crossword puzzles that list future events before they happen.

And even some events that don't happen. We have averted nuclear war in Israel ten times over, thanks to the faith and purity of people like Harold Camping and his numerous readers.

^ This sums up the appeal of the books. Trust me, I have family who go nuts over this prophecy stuff.

Even when I know this would never happen. Even when I know that Camping is lying. Something in me is telling me, "What if he's right this time? What will happen if he's right?"

It's freaking me out. And the fact that there's ten days left isn't helping matters.

Nowhere in the Bible says that the world ends instantly like that, so I wouldn't go with what Camping says.

Harold basically just took a bunch of random events in the bible, assigned numbers to them, assigned random unexplained math to them and claimed that was when the world ended.

Its Insane Troll Logic at its best.

October 21, 2011.

Camping, general manager of Family Radio and Bible teacher, published a book, 1994?, a prediction of Christ's return was likely pointing to 1994 with the possibility that it will happen in 2011. He later claimed that the rapture would be on May 21, 2011 followed by the end of the world on October 21 of the same year. Camping wrote "Adam when?" and claimed the Biblical calendar meshes with the secular and is accurate from 11,013 BC–2011 AD.[80] Harold Camping (1992). 1994?. Vantage Press, Inc.. ISBN 0533103681.

Many people believe that while we cannot know the hour of the world's ending, we do know that it will occur when we least expect it to. Therefore, they pour their energy into making sure that their forecasts of doom and gloom are well publicised, ensuring that somebody, somewhere is in a perpetual state of expectation that the world is coming to an end, thus ensuring that it can never happen.

Wow, another Rapture prediction. That makes probably the fiftieth one I've heard given in my lifetime, nevermind all the hundreds or even thousands given in history.

^ Huh, that's one way to look at it... [lol]

EDIT: Silly Harold, everyone knows that the world ends in December of '12...

But dont like half the sects of christianity push the idea constantly that "this is the end times!"

By that logic, doesnt that mean theyll never be right?

There's a difference between "approaching the end times" and predicting the exact date, which is contrary to Matthew 24:36.

Here's the discussion we had last time.

I remember looking up the prices of hookers and blow in Russia to calculate how much of each Camping could enjoy if he'd fled with all the money that people gave him in the build-up to this ... well, I hate to call it a great disappointment, but that really is what it was for some people to live to see another day in this beautiful world.

Not really, seeing as christians have been convinced the end times are here since the ink was barely dry on Revelations.

I'm pretty sure that Bible Code theories depend on Revelations, so either way, the exact date is considered to be out of question.

If the legal system did what it was made to do, Camping would have been indicted long ago. This whole thing is a scam and even Camping knows it.

[up] According to that same link, Harold Camping made 4 predictions circa 1994, and October 21 of this year would be his 6th predicted "apocalypse." I suppose he's hoping no one will remember 1994. He almost reminds me of a little kid saying "Is it here yet?" over and over again, like he wants the world to end soon or something. (or at least wants people to give him money)

In the previous thread on this, there were links to articles that put the total sum of all donations to Camping in the $80 million ballpark. With that, he could get... I'm just gonna look up my previous post again...

Yeah, I re-did the math; apparently, the price for cocaine in Russia that I found was in grams instead of kilograms (not a trivial error...) So with the $80 million, if he fled to Russia and spent half of the loot on hookers and the other half on blow, he could get about 200 kilos of blow and about 146 years with 5 hookers per night.

I don't know about the claim that the donations made him rich. I think much of the money is spent on the 21st advertising and what he does is compel people to spend their own money for the prophecy cause. That's why he refuses to reimburse people following May 21st, because he claims that the decision is up to the followers.

Of course he doesn't really use that money on luxuries. Based on what little he told the press after the disaster (how someone could see the continuation of mankind's existence as that boggles the mind) he really does seem to believe his own bullshit. He looked and sounded like a broken man.

One could wonder how much value society gained from doomsday advertising that cost $80 million...
