Now I'm thinking of something I read on the Discontinuity page.

"Fans who like Drama but consider Jon Anderson to be the bands only singer see it as a Buggles album that features members of Yes."

That's...incredibly stupid. The album is basically Yes mixed with The Buggles, but mostly Yes. Some parts of it sounds like Trevor Horn is imitating Jon Anderson's vocal style. Geoff Downes was a great replacement for Rick Wakeman, he was just as mad of a keyboard player, just with more 80's era synths. You could argue it's heavier than Yes's usual style but Steve Howe had already began heading that route starting on Relayer and Going For the One when he switched to solid body guitars. It's a good album and I'm a bit annoyed that Todd brushed it off like that. The stuff on there is better than friggin' 90125, I can tell you that.

I'm surprised that Todd didn't make a comparison joke about The Buggles dream of a mad scientist pumping out subpar music with a machine and the rise of producer led EDM of the 2010's.

"Wow they really DID predict the future!"

The origin of the name sounds like it would make a great rock opera where you contrasts the Mad's Scientists polished, but empty music with that of a heroic last real band.

Considering how often Devo gets mentioned in the series, has Todd ever said anything about a Devo episode? Or does he consider them part of the Hendrix Clause like we do?

He probably considers them part of the Hendrix clause.

Didn't Devo also at least have another hit with their cover of "Satisfaction"? If nothing else, I'm pretty sure it was at least an MTV hit.

Horn's voice went out because they refused to change the key for the older songs to fit his vocal range.
What the hell, why wouldn't they do that, that's incredibly dumb.

Something about them not having time to because they were about to go to tour like right then and there. They were desperate to tour.

but like if they didn't have time to practice them in a different key couldn't they just like put a capo on their guitars, change the key on the keyboards, and play them normally? like, this is not an actual problem.

Steve Howe and Chris Squire are dickish prog rockers with their heads up their asses, more at eleven.

Seriously, Steve Howe once refused to let Peter Banks on stage with him during the Union tour because of how egotistical he was. Banks ain't a saint either (the guy implied he wrote part of Roundabout, that's flat out bullshit), but Howe has a huge ego.

why wouldn't you let a guitarist in your band on stage with you during your shows

Like even ignoring the ego part, that just doesn't make sense.

Banks was invited by Tony Kaye as a guest for a concert. The Union tour was when the 70's and 80's lineups reunited as one, and Kaye was still pals with Banks and Banks happened to be in town. Howe is very stuck up about extra guitarists playing with him, so he told Kaye and Bill Bruford that he didn't want Banks on stage.

EDIT: The tour had Trevor Rabin of the 80's Yes lineup too, but Howe apparently still didn't like playing with him or something. I think Rabin and Rick Wakeman might've made some potshots about Howe behind the scenes or something, the two seemed to really hit it off.

Also, just fuck the entire Union tour. The album barely had the members of Yes on it, but the tour was just a stupid cashgrab.

Minor points to add on past this whole Yes discussion everyone's having:

  • Here are some more tracks Trevor Horn has lent his mad scientist producer touch to. And he still doesn't mention what I consider to be the weirdest production choice: producing a Belle & Sebastian album!
  • I wonder if Todd realises the subtext behind comparing the Yes and Buggles hullaballoo to 'the guy from MAGIC!' replacing Matthew Bellamy because the former was actually involved in songwriting for other pop stars, not unlike Horn's production for the big names of the 80s (and later)

And as Adric's already explained, said Buggles-Yes combination does make sense with the background info - besides, you wanna know a OHW with an even weirder history? Let's just talk about how a band goes from this:

to this, in just a span of 6 years:

(which reminds me, Smasher and I are kinda discussing whether they fall in the Hendrix clause - certainly nowadays they're not particularly well-known for their early synthpop hits [and that one hit of theirs is probably even better known as the No Doubt cover], but what they are known for is being pioneers in 'post-rock'... though that is still a rather niche genre, even in 'serious music fan' circles)

I don't know much about Talk Talk so it might be debatable if they fall under Hendrix Clause or not. Best to take it up with somebody with more knowledge of the group.

Oh, and another thing about the video: The song from The Buggles's second album that Todd played part of, I Am a Camera, is actually a cover of a song from Drama by Yes, though on there it's called Into the Lens.

Has Todd ever given a reason why he refuses to do a OHW on "Whats Up" by 4 non blondes? I mean, it seems to go beyond just not liking the song.

I think he implied that the review would just be nothing but negative bile from him for the whole duration. Which wouldn't be funny but just uncomfortable and unpleasant.

I think hes made an offhand remark that he'd do it if someone paid him to but like, he thoroughly discorages it

I think the He-Man meme is also a reason why he won't review it. Todd generally has a disdain for "meme hits" and he's frustrated enough with people telling him to do "Never Gonna Give You Up" because of Rickrolling.

Yeah, but like, the Rick Astley clause came into effect specifically because people were badgering Todd into reviewing it because the meme of Never Gonna Give You Up has made people assume Rick Astley was a OHW despite having multiple hits while he was kicking around.

Usually from people who weren't around during his heyday.

It's similar to Men at Work. Land Down Under has become the song about Australia in the pop cultural subconscious (though down here it shares that spot with Icehouse's Great Southern Land) that it's totally eclipsed everything else they've done through sheer overexposure. Even though they've had two top charting hits (Land Down Under and the excellent Who Can It Be Now), were pretty successful outside those hits and are generally a really solid band.
