I got tickets to an advance screening last night.

The movie is Rocky meets Fighting Robots. Really, that is all it is.

Now this would make me complain, but hey, rocky was an awesome movie, and fighting robots are awesome, so when you put them together, you get something awesome, right? Actually, right. It was a good movie. It surprised me.

Go play Kentucky Route Zero. Now.

People seem to think this movie is going to fail, suck, and sink. I think its going to kick ass.

As a sports movie, it was actually pretty good. As a ROBOTS FIGHTING EACH OTHER movie, it was really good.

So all together, it was good.

Still, I can't get out of my head that it's just "Rocky meets Rockem Sockem Robots." That kind of ruined the experience.

Oh, so there's no cool twist or anything?

...Whatever. It looked like a lot of fun in the trailer, so I'll probably see it anyway if it really is a lot of fun.

When I saw the trailer, BTW, I actually was sure the title was going to be "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots" as some sort of cash-in, but thankfully that wasn't the case.

Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you. As long as you remember them, you are not alone.

Ehhh, I dunno. The Cheese meter is pegging pretty high with this. I don't have any burning desire to see this so I'm not going to blow $100+ on a "maybe." DVD rental sure though.

It really wasn't that cheesy. Okay, maybe it was kind of cheesy, but it felt realistic. The setting actually felt like something that could happen, instead of just GIANT ROBOTS FTW. Also, whoever playing the kid, they did a great job. He came across as, well, a kid. Not a hollywood version of a kid, but a kid.

In the movie, he plays a kid who is at first highly cynical, but enjoys robot boxing the same way some kids enjoy WWE. This protrayal makes sense, and the way he reacts to getting his own robot, (a combination of MINE and OMG I HAVE A ROBOT FTW) actually makes sense.

In retrospect, the thread I started for this film was way too early. Anyway, we've had a page since the first trailers came out and it needs work.

The first thing that should be done is moving it to Real Steel.

Page is in the proper namespace and is indexed.

The movie isn't deep, philosophical or groundbreaking. It doesn't try to be. It doesn't aim for epic heights (although there is Oscar Bait, but what big feature of today doesn't have that?).

It was made to be a movie about robots boxing and a father bonding with his son. Both happen. End of story.

Presumably in other non league matches wrestling moves are allowed.

On thing about the movie that made me wonder was about the future of the sport of robot boxing. Charlie showed how effective a shadow function could be(less delay times than voice command) when backed by a skilled user. One wonders if shadow functions and trained shadow boxers will end up becoming more common in the sport.
