Its still a ways off, but Sigourney Weaver is hinting that her character is Not Quite Dead.

Personally I though that the first movie sucked. But I'm willing to give the series a second chance.

Quaritch wants his god damned unobtanium.

It was filled with so much imagination as far as the world of Pandora and the human tech designs, but I was just so disappointed on the by-the-numbers story. From the first trailer I could only think "The trailer told me the entire story in two minutes..." I'll admit the characters were well-enough developed, generally likeable but there was nothing surprising over what happened. The whole thing felt more workmanlike rather than real movie-magic.

And on a more personal note, it may seem weird but the fact that the special effects were so seemless actually made me notice it even more. The reason is because there was just a constant glaze over everything both practical and FX, it made the whole movie feel artificial even if it was so well polished.

A sequel might turn out alright, but evidently I am not a giddy fanboy of the first film...

Indeed, you are definitly able to say that you can't tell the CGI from the practical effects. But only because of that veneer of fakeyness.

Totally agree with the first post. Great setting and themes. Poor paint by numbers story. Hopefully the second gets a better plot.

For me, Grace was the best thing about that film. Not that her presence alone would get me to watch a sequel to that pretty Cliché Storm. I wasn't even all that impressed by the CGI.

Can Trudy come back too?

I was being a smartass. It's one of the few ways I get in reach of "smart".

Anyway, given my multiple posts on the subject of the realistic human response to the eviction from Pandora over in the original movie thread (summary: Colony Drop using local rocks as "ammo"), I'm expecting A2 to aim even lower as far as sensible plot goes, with idiot balls flying like snowflakes in a blizzard.

From a story telling perspective, unless you want a tragedy, I don't see why you would want to make a sequel to Avatar as the only possible sequel to Little Bighorn is Wounded Knee.

I can see why you would make a sequel from a financial perspective, Avatar was a 2 billion dollar movie and it made back four times its cost, their is no reason not to do a sequel.

Therefore they should only make half a sequel.

True enough, since the original film was on-odds 3 hours long.

I might see the second but I want Colonel Miles motherfuckin' Quaritch to return if Weaver's character returns.

Quaritch was my favorite character in the first one.

I think his actor has actually said you can't count anyone who died on Pandora as completely dead...

Lol, no thanks. Having to sit through the first one was enough for me.

As for the supposedly imaginative world, the marginally interesting bits are nothing anyone who hadn't watched too many nature documentaries and read too much high fantasy about elves who are better couldn't have come up with. And the rest is just a bunch of stuff that sounds like the product of the mind of your 3-year-old cousin and falls apart as soon as you examine it further (i.e. floating mountains).

That's true, actually. I totally understand the movie's message and even support it, but the heavy-handed "PEOPLE R BAD" way it was handled kind of just made me want to gag.

If it becomes an epic battle in the Sol system over the remaining resources or whatever, I would go see it.

Honestly I hated the Na'vi. They came across as holier-than-thou. Which is why I'd pay to see a movie where they get glassed from orbit. Alas, Cameron won't make it so.

At first, I thought this thread was about a The Last Airbender sequel, and I was all "AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH FUCK NO NO NO".

You never know, this could be The Empire Strikes Back of Avatar. I mean, Star Wars is not so origonal. Of course, I'm not saying that Star Wars and Avatar are on the same level, just that there are parallels between the two that give me a bit of optimism.

I agree Quaritch returning is one of the things I am looking forward to. Since we know cloning happens in this world, well its not to far of an extension to see him "coming back."

I can just picture it now. Normal day on Pandora, Na'vi doing...Na'vi things. Bombs start falling and loud speakers boom "I'm STILL BREATHIN!"

Best cold open ever. Then do like a 10 year time skip.

Also I feel like I must steal Draco's "sequel to Little Big Horn" line because that is fucking hilarious.

James Cameron has done really good sequels before with Aliens and T2...maybe he can work his sequel magic to fix up a lot of the issues with Avatar?

Consider me cautiously optimistic.

Didn't he have to retcon things in T2 to get the plot to work, though?
