Just came across this from Macross Missile Massacre. It's named after Robotech, which apparently has something to do with Macross which is probably why it's got a named in a similar way to Macross Missile Massacre. Actually come to think of it Macross Missile Massacre could probably do with a rename thread as well.

It's essentially a "Smart Missile" trope, for when a projectile will launch out away from the target and then turn into the target.

171 wicks, 1605 inbounds.

The name has absolutely nothing to do with the trope. I don't even know what Robotech is, so I have no idea what "Roboteching". It sounds like a dance, or a music genre.

Smart Missile Movement as an alternative?

Swerving Projectile captures the trope much better, methinks.

So swap the alt with the main?

This is really Impossible missile and Beam Spam Physics, a real missile can adjust it's course to a point in flight, this trope is about impossible ones like a full 180. Lasers and beams most certainly can never work that way in RL.

[up] That would be confused with it's sister trope Homing Projectile.

Iirc a rename thread failed on this recently but I am leaning on yes renaming but this should not get a snowclone name..... Macross Missile Massacre though IMO is fine it is indictive enough.

Implausibly Homing Projectile, maybe? Swerving Projectile doesn't go far enough...as Raso said, this is about projectiles that travel like they were manned craft. Possibly Implausibly Swerving Projectile...

Swerving itself doesn't go far enough I think and they don't have to be homing they just have to break the laws of missile and beam weapon physics. Sometime these even surround the target stop and wait for banter and then change course the the target. They might be mentally controlled or yada.

The only real big thing is these will make at minimum a missile or beam weapon that makes an impossible turn over a short distance usually for Rule of Cool or dramatic effect.

Previous thread.

Previous Wick Checks showed no pattern of misuse. Inbounds are high. Growth rate of inbounds is very healthy (average of something like +100 a month for the past seven months).

This trope has been doing fine; by the look of it, a rename should not be necessary here.

[up] Implausibility is fine for an Exaggerated examples, but the base of the trope is a projectile attack that swerves (preferably sharply) to hit its target, for whatever reason.

[up][up]No, the misuse was disputed. Don't try to pretend that means there was no misuse at all.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

Terrible name outweights inbounds.

I don't see how the name is "terrible", nor how that outweighes inbounds of all things. Also, I had the slight impression that this trope was rrenamed to Roboteching Rocket or something similar in an even older thread, but apparently I got horribly mistaken. That said, I support renaming of this trope to something less name-dependant, though we don't need to drop the reference at all.

[up]Robotech Rocket Swerve? Merriam-Webster was light on synonyms starting with 'R', but would Robotech Rocket Rounding do?

EDIT: No, Rebotech anything will not do.

If it was with that high Added Alliterative Appeal, it must have been something like Robotech Redirecting Rocket, which I thought was a redirect. The idea being that normal, RL!rockets can redirect, but the ones in this trope do it to Robotech-like levels.

And why Robotech can't be part of the name? (see the above)

Robotech can. Rebotech can't. In other words, typo.

[up][up] That one is pretty good if we go with that we should probably have a beam weapon specific redirect too which this page does cover, while rarer, it is even more impossible.

[up][up] Lemme facepalm. Hard.

[up]Yes, thanks, although I think it was proposed too long ago in the previous-to-the-above thread for TRSing that trope.

I am against renaming unless misuse is shown; based on the wicks checked so far, I would not expect to see a lot of misuse.

No, the misuse was disputed. Don't try to pretend that means there was no misuse at all.
There were a few scattered instances of misuse, but there was no pattern of misuse, i.e. there wasn't a significant number of wicks found to be misused in a consistent way.*
