This is the type I was talking about. They are retro and fashionable when on young girls, not geeky, but when on old ladies it's usually just used to date them.

[up] Yeah, those are also annoyingly called Horn Rimmed Glasses. They're just the feminine version and they have an entirely different connotation than the male ones.

Ugly Glasses works for me to differentiate.

Neither type is treated as universally ugly though. The male version is associated with nerds and hipsters. The female version with women of a certain age, and retro girls.

Ugh, I wish the people who had invented these things had the courtesy to give each frame design different names. As it is, we would probably need some kind of disclaimer page for Hornrimmed Glasses pointing out the two different types and they different tropes.

How about Thick Framed Nerd Glasses?

They're sadly named for what they're made out of. Not the style. It does make it irksome though. I like Thick Rimmed Nerd Glasses with Horn Rimmed Glasses as disambig.

Huh, I thought it was because they had the little bits poking out.

Nope, it's because traditionally they were rimmed in horn. Or plastic made to look like horn.

Okay, this page has fallen from the top page and the crowner seems to have stabilized, with overwhelming majority to split into western and eastern variations. From how I see this playing out, the new Nerd Glasses tropes will look like this:

  • Nerd Glasses - A supertrope to the western and eastern variations; quite simply glasses that are nerdy (the trope is most often used like it means this anyway).

Unless there are any objections to this, I'm going to try to get someone to switch this crowner to a naming one for the Eastern Variation trope.

Actually I think Nerd glasses will need to be a disambig page rather than a supertrope.

[up]It's just that generic nerd glasses is used in quite a few works, so it would be good to have it since only specific types fit into the West & East versions as we currently have them.

Exactly how are we splitting this again? I would like to know for title.

Maybe a prelim description of the new trope?

[up]The new trope that is beeing discussed here is just a rename of the current trope. I'll explain it again, because my first description was a bit convoluted, so this is a rundown of everything: The page that currently exists at the Nerd Glasses namespace will be renamed, and this thread is to discuss what is should be renamed to. The description will not be changed except for minor tweaks. The trope that is currently at Nerd Glasses is what we are referring to as the Eastern Variation, since it is usually found in anime and other eastern media. Western media uses a different type of glasses just as commonly, and the article for this will be discussed later in a new thread. After the opaque nerd glasses trope that is currently at the Nerd Glasses namespace is moved, a new trope will take over the name Nerd Glasses, which will be discussed in another thread as well.

Sorry for the long winded explanation, I just didn't know what needed clearing up. To just answer your question, the description of the trope will be the same as it is now. It's just a classic page move.

If you were asking about the western variation description, it depends if we're going with hornrimmed glasses or bug eyed glasses or whatever it is. I'm a bit fuzzy on this; it was mostly discussed by everyone else.

I was talking about the large big circular glasses in general with opaque as a bonus they are always seen as nerdy even when not opaque (IE my avy) just opaque takes it to the next step of nerdy, or just the Circular opaque ones.

[up]If they're non-opaque, they'd fit into the future, more general Nerd Glasses trope whenever it gets made. It doesn't fit with the current Nerd Glasses/Soon to be Opaque Nerd Glasses or whatever; the whole reason it needs a name change is because only the one particular type of glasses fits the trope, while it is being used for all nerdy glasses.

I think the crowner has stabilized; should we call it? Also, would someone be able to make up a draft for the two other new tropes?

Sorry for the triple post, but is it alright with everyone if we change the name now?
