It's about wearing people's skin, but it sounds like something about how evil people wear leather or some shit like that.

The last thread on this decided to rename it Genuine Human Hide but it looks like the rename never went through.

Both names sound good. I had in mind the more blunt "Skin Stealer", but it lacks the comedy angle.

Skin Stealer also sounds like a completely different trope. It's a common sort of magical creature that takes a person's skin and then becomes that person.

Dangit, I remember having an objection to the proposed title with "human" in it because a number of Redwall villains have done this, but I never went and actually added the examples. Cluny had a batwing cape with a mole skull clasp, Ferahgo the Assassin wore his victim's pelts, and I'd swear there's more. Does anyone else agree that they fit, before I go adding them nowish?

[up] Yes, and in all those cases, it doesn't cause the same reaction and it's not this trope. Even skinning other sentient creatures doesn't pull the same emotional chords as when it happens to a human. It's sad, but it's true.

The trope description doesn't exactly say anything about human skin though, just the skins of enemies. Even if Most Writers Are Human (and Most Readers Are Human) affects the reaction, does it really justify two tropes?

It's treated differently by a work when it's human and it causes a different gut reaction. Animals especially really shouldn't count. It's just treated in media as a much lesser crime.

Also, enemies is really probably the wrong word. Victims is better. A lot of times this is done by serial killers types more than spoils of war.

Redwall has no humans in it, only Civilized Talking Animals. I'm sure there are Speculative Fiction settings where this applies as well.

Yes, and in the Redwall books, there isn't that same gut reaction that there would be if it was human. It's not treated the same. It's not the same level of horror. I've read the books. That's why I'm making my judgement that it really doesn't seem to be the same trope.

Wearing Your Enemies? Also, the description needs work.

As neither enemies nor wearing are required for the trope, that's a terrible name. It's about making leather out of your victim's skin.

Well the description makes it seem limited to victims, while the examples limit this to just wearing humans.

That's because the majority of the time in fiction people end up wearing them. The trope is broader than that though and making the name narrower will not help it get more examples.

Well if it's at least mainly about people, we could call this Human Hyde.

What.

...Is that a typo or something? Why not Human Hide?

No, it's me not remembering the right spelling. I'm usually good with spelling (barring typos), but some words just throw me off.

Thank heavens. I thought it was a pun of some kind.

For the sake of offering the most SPOONeriffic name I can... is there a glaring reason not to call it Making Leather Out Of Your Victims or something similar?

I like Human Skin Leather and Genuine Human Hide. At any rate, the current name needs changing.

Shima said something in post 3 about an earlier decision to rename that just got forgotten. The name was picked and everything. Is there any reason we shouldn't just finish the job?

Here is a link to an earlier thread on this subject. I did not see a crowner on the crowner index for this trope, but I get the impression from the old thread that there seemed to be support for Genuine Human Hide. Still, I agree with some of the concerns that this should not just be limited to examples of human enemies.

Would it make sense to make an alternative titles crowner for this trope so that we could come to some defined consensus on a new name?

Bumping for resolution.

[up] I see no harm in it. Hang on, I'll put one together.

EDIT: And created. I only put the two options that got (relatively) wide support on there, though; feel free to add (some of) the others, if you want.
