What.

As of yesterday, Germany’s Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons (Bundesprufstelle) has removed Doom – and Doom II – from its list of ‘controlled’ games, following an appeal by id’s owners Bethesda. Their reasoning? Because the Bundesprufstelle thinks Doom is ‘now only of artistic and scientific interest and will not appeal to youngsters’, according to the BBC.

Sadly they are probably correct.

What's with all the censorship over there? I wouldn't have expected the German government to be such a bunch of nazis.

Well, only young people who might be interested of them are ones who played third one or gamers o-o But good question why they bother... Maybe they are trying to clear up its name in germany or something?

Yeah not offensive at all actually a comma.

Germans hate violent games. They don't even like the antics of football hooligans, at least not their authorities. It's only natural that would be even more so when kids are involved.

[up] Well, for what it's worth, i believe i have N-Word Privileges when it comes to Germany as my entire family hails from there. And i do believe they are acting particularly Nazi-esque when it comes to things that are strange and different and hard to understand.

Germans hate violent games.
Which is exactly why they are so popular here. Because all Germans, even the gamers, and not just the moral guardians hate violent games. Yeah, this makes a fuckload of sense.

Well, for what it's worth, i believe i have N Word Privileges when it comes to Germany as my entire family hails from there.
You like to think that, do you? But that's nonsense, not even Germans themselves have that. The only thing, were a comparison with nazis could be appropriate, is when dealing with dictatorial, fascist nations.

I wonder if anybody would think of comparing Australians, which have it even worse, to nazis.

Of course not.

Isn't it actually rather easy to get supposedly banned games in Germany, anyway?

Nonsense. The video games target market has nothing but hate and disdain for the Bundesprüfstelle etc. anyway.

Ugh, fucking (de facto) censorship.

Nyarly, did you even read my post, it wasn't even five sentences...but here's the keyword.

Eh, I guess arguing online isn't going to change it but I'm sick Nazi being thrown around like a dirty word. You people realize what it was the Nazis actually did? That's not a light comparison to make. They've become a western shorthand for what the speaker doesn't agree with but that doesn't make it right. Yes, German censors are notorious for hating violent games because they are. That's not an insult, that's a fact. As much of a fact that it doesn't resemble that "party" at all.

What the publishers should do is pulling out of Gayermany. Crytek? Pack up your shit, guys, and move to Hungary for example. Microsoft? We sincerely apologize, but from next Monday on, Xbox Live and Games For Windows Live in Germany cease to function and all accounts are locked. Steam? We are sorry, but our service is unavailable in your country. Online games? Total IP ban for Germans.
Then, politicians should receive letters from the publishers: we're coming back when you drop that totalitarian censorship jackboot shit. Otherwise, kiss your tax income and votes good-bye.

Because some folks don't get it until you make their knees bend backward with a judicious application of lead pipe.

What took them so fucking long?
I guess, no one requested a re-review before.

[up] The first game not (to my knowledge. Would be interesting to see if it's ban would be lift today too. With other games, it varies. At least Deadly Alliance is available and (apparently) uncensored. I know that because I have it.

What makes it really fucking dumb is how inconsistent it is. To this day, all God Of War games and Dead Space (the first at least, I'm not sure about the second since I haven't played it) are uncensored and unbanned here. Among others.

Personally, I am in favour of this decision, even if Doom is what modern gamers call old, it's still a bit less censorship, and censorship is [[Understatement not something I agree with.]]

Developers for Germany should pull a Valve. Release a censored version, patch it with the uncensored version after installation/boot up

@Nyarly: It has more to do with outside perception of German game censorship. Left 4 Dead 2 had to be censored for Germany, as the story goes, but to make up for that, Valve put in Counter Strike weapons for German players. And then there's the German version of Half Life, which replaced all Humans with robots and then there's Command And Conquer, the German release(s) of which replaced the Infantry with cyborgs.
