Exactly, the parents don't have to buy the meals if they don't feel comfortable feeding their kids that. All this move is doing is ruining the fun for everyone.

According to the blip from the article, the parents were complaining and generally opposed to the idea. Now whether those parents are a vocal minority or not, I don't know. But the basic idea is, if I'm taking care of my kid, and they can at times me-frankly-a snotnosed little brat, I want to minimize the things that they're going to hassle me about.
I am pro ending toys with kids meals. Kids still have cereal boxes and any number of other ways of getting their collectibles, where they want the one that's OMFG uber rare...
What astounds me is that this is such a fundamentally bad business decision. The reason the parents want there to not be toys is because they want to be able to more easily not eat at these places. You can't say "the good PR will make up for it." These are people who don't want to eat at your shitty restaurant!

The fast food chain says it's the 'right thing to do' - to promote healthier eating...and put an end to so-called 'pester power'.
A recent survey shows most parents are against restaurants giving away toys to promote meals that may not meet the dietary requirements of their children.
The decision comes three years after KFC stopped advertising or promoting its kids menu.
KFC Corporate Affairs Manager, Zac Rich, said giveaway toys had been introduced during a very different era but the concept had now had its day. 'From KF Cs point of view it is definitely time to move on. We think the idea of toys being given away with meals has had its day and were pleased to be taking the lead in removing them,' he said.
'We hope this decision today will support parents in making dietary decisions on behalf of their children which arent influenced in any way by pressure to choose the meal that has a toy,' Mr Rich said.
