Hmm... I just moved to New Jersey for law school so I have no preparation for this nor access to preparation stuff (don't have a car, don't know where to get plywood, whatever). Should I be worried? I live near the border of Pennsylvania, which hopefully means I'm as far away from the coast as its possible to be in this state, and I live on the 5th floor so I'm not too worried about flooding, but... I'm also particularly worried about my windows.

We usually put our waterproof patio furniture inside our pool. It works surprisingly well, as the wind does not touch the underwater stuff.

Generally, I you aren't in a flooding area, and your windows are boarded up, you can ride out a level 1-2 hurricane. If it is higher than that, you are in a flooding area, or you live near the ocean, you should evacuate.

Go play Kentucky Route Zero. Now.

That information means very little to me. Assume I know nothing about how to interpret weather. The only thing I've cared about before is whether I need an umbrella or not; I don't even know how to interpret rainfall inches.

It's surprisingly user friendly if you look, actually. Hell, they've even got graphics that can show you stuff even if you have no clue what the numbers mean.

For example, a Hurricane Warning is exactly what it sounds like - you're going to be hit by a hurricane in the next two days.

...and that means what exactly? It's raining a lot and windy? Will my windows break? Will I have access to food? It's missing all the details that are actually relevant to me.

There Is No Crystal Ball. We can't see the future, they can only do our best to predict it. If you want to know if there is a chance your windows will break, yes, if they're not protected there is. If you want a yes or no answer, we can't help you. Look at the maps, they give you the probabilities and numbers.

The forecast for my region says:

Tropical storm conditions expected, with hurricane conditions possible. Periods of rain and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 68. East wind 31 to 41 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 3 and 4 inches possible.

Ignoring the rainfall, are 50 mph winds dangerous?

Lessinath from In the wilderness. Since: Nov, 2010

Here, I found something that puts it in pretty straightforward terms what various wind speeds can do.

The fourth column from the left is miles per hour, and the rightmost is the effects you may see on land. If the winds exceed that chart, you're well into hurricane winds and should consult the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane wind scale instead.

As for four inches of rain, well, that's about ankle deep - but remember, water flows downhill so it may flood if you're in a low lying area.

Here's a blog post with a number of good suggestions. do the ones of them that you can. do the best you can about the others. Cute — get in touch with your grandparents(I think it was?) and see if you can get them to get you (and themselves) out if there. If your mother won't go, she won't, but don't stay yourself, if you can get out. I know that sounds cold and heartless, but it's truth. Staying won't do you or her any good.

If you can't find the south east with the big spinning storm, I can't help you.

If you're offended, I'll give you a tissue.

Also, to those of you who are unprepared... Do better next time. There is a historical precedent for hurricanes hitting the Atlantic States and New England, you have no good reason to be unprepared. NHS (National Hurricane Center) has been saying this was a matter of time for years and now they may be proven right, it's a shame that people will probably die to teach this lesson. A lesson that will be forgotten in 10 years regardless.

Because people are stupid. And that is the greatest hindrance in these things.

People assume that because it doesn't happen to them at that moment that it can never happen to them. You see this with tornadoes also.

Tornadoes have it worse because rotation in the clouds is worthy of a warning, but if people don't see damage or see a tornado they think the NWS is crying wolf. The fools.

I heard that some parts of New York is being evaculated, or they're preparing to evaculate. Is that true?

[up] [up] New York Mayor Bloomberg is asking residents from low lying areas to seek higher ground/evacuate.

It was the same around here in Texas. Luckily we had 3 years to plan for the next one due to the disastrous evacuation before Hurricane Rita in '05.

On the one hand, good luck to everyone. On the other hand, I am not at all worried about Irene, being from north-central Connecticut and living on a mountain. No, what sucks for us is that Broadway has apparently panicked far more than us and essentially all weekend shows have been canceled. So, no Book of Mormon tomorrow. We rescheduled for April.

I actually decided against putting a status to this effect on Facebook. I am happy to have this outlet here. I hope you understand I mean no disrespect to anyone. Again, good luck. I have no experience with hurricanes and therefore no personal advice to offer.
